The initial step in the joint educational program was the establishment ol' a curriculum in Police Science lead- ing to the Associate in Applied Science degree which had been registered by the State Education Department. Course work in the A'.A.S. program -began in Sep- tember. 1955. A Specialization in Police Science in the curriculum leading to the Bachelor of Business Administration degree was approved in 1957 and the first matriculated students were 'admitted to the program in September.'l957. ' ln June of 1964 the Board. of Higher Education established The College of Police Science as a senior college in the City University of New York. It opened in September ol' 1965 and Michael J. Murphy was named Acting President. The col- lege absorbed the undergraduate program in Police Science which had been offered at the Baruch School. In September of 1966 Leonard E. Reismanwas named Pres- ident ol' the College and in 1966 the College's name was changed to more accurately reflect its concern with the whole field ofcriminaljustice. I. , The sudden death of President Reisman in November of 1967 was mourned by the College community: his devotion to the students and the College will long be re- membered, and in his short time as President he left a distinct mark in itsfhistory. ln June of 1968 the Board of Higher Education named Donald H. Riddle'Bresident ofthe College. Q , if The educational program of the College has as its objectives the broad education of law enforcement oflicers, professional training for police and other services in the process of criminal justice, improvement ofthe process of criminal justice, development of necessary goals of leadership, and the fosteringjgofAipiiofessional achievement in public service. A g , 'li , . A graduate program in Public Administration began in Septem'bergf3l'967. Al- though the College's program is intended primarily for personnel of the various criminal justice agencies of New York City, it is also open, both in the graduate and undergraduate division, to non-City criminal justice agency personnel and to a limited number olcivilian students. 4 PRESIDENTS MESSAGE I wish to add my personal congratulations to each mem- ber of the graduating class of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice. I am well aware of the long years of sacrifice on the part of students and their families that is required for successful completion of academic work at this college. But every graduate can take satisfaction from the personal development of which the diploma is a symbol and of the contribution to the profes- sionalization of law enforcement which will be a result. I should like, also, to con- gratulate the editors of the Yearbook. It represents an im- portant contribution to the building of a sense of community at this unique college. It is my hope that it will be one means of maintaining each graduate's continued association and identi- fication with the College. I extend to each of you again, my congratulations and my very best wishes for continued success in every endeavor. R Rihanna Y! I ii 954, 5 ff 'fir i W i K 4 . , I .-xv A v M ,. fm. . Donald H.
