4 CTh L Horncbt c lclv(l5 h s Gft i no f THE SONG IS ENDED BUT THE MELODY UNGERS ON JOHN HAY HIGH SCHOOL 2075 EAST 107™ STREET CLEVELAND, OHIO 44106 A Dedication From the Seniors ... Because they are respected and admired by the studentt and faculty... and since they have shown tender kindness, concern, and expert guidance for many troubled youth... ft is with great pleasure that we dedicate the 1972 Hornet to Mr. Carl Lavender and Mr. Jerry Mitchell, who in our estimation, have instilled within us a new sense of devotion; a profound respect for mankind, and a keen desire to succeed. 2 It’s Time to Reminisce . . . It's difficult to explain how these students could find a place in front of the school to think about vacations, new friends, visits, money and no homework. They look as though they don't have any troubles, but they do. They arc entitled to their thinking and opinions, but after all is said and done, they will return to their English classes. Perched on the top are Willie Howard, Warren Hogue. Below arc Rose Berry, Sandra Toney, Denise Cunningham, Wilhemia Russell and Wilbur Holly. More Reflecting These young ladies are looking forward to graduation. Paula Evans seems to be saying, Just wait until I get out of this place. Pat Harris has a faraway look in her eyes, while Dagmar Carlisle, Francetta Perry, and Debra Littlejohn just take it easy. 3 MIXED UP HEADS AND CRAZY LEGS. .. Somehow during a ladies social gathering, these young men lost their heads to the young ladies. Someone has removed their heads and placed them on the WRONG persons. The underlined names are the first names of the young men. Answers on the next page. 4 This Has Got to Be a Nightmare . . . Anything can happen in our generation. It's too bad that these young ladies have exchanged heads with the young men. It wasn't supposed to be that way, but it is! Deborah Clark and Sharon Vaughn (not pictured) were selected to participate in a year long science program in Coordination Chemistry at Notre Dame College, which began September 4, 1971 and ended May 30, 1972. The General stressed these points in his message: When you shout for freedom now, make sure you have a place in which to be free in. The country is more responsive and receptive to your needs today, than ever before. We must operate as a whole American society and not within militancy where the structure is weakened. The program's timely theme was Education Now. Education Now, is the business of the entire community. The future business of all students depend upon the extent to which the parents, the pupils, the faculty, and the community leaders function as a team to achieve the school's educational goals. The program began at 7:30, with class visitation starting at 8:00. Members of the PTSA, headed by Mrs. Elizabeth Brownlee, and the Adult Boosters Club, presided by Mrs. Earl Douthitt, helped in the initial planning of the Open House affair. Mr. Sam Tidmore, General Manager of Hough Development, joins in. “Rap On,” Rev. Jackson A few days before the election of Cleveland's new mayor, Reverend Jesse Jackson spoke before an overflowing audience in the 4 school's auditorium. It was an inspiring speech heard on October 29, and when he concluded with his emotional appeal of What Time Is It ?, he received a standing ovation. This fearless leader stressed black pride as well as black progress. He said, I'm not talking about Nation's time, I'm talking about What Time It Is In Your Mind? Reverend Jackson reminded the students to insist that their parents vote in the coming election. He recommended Arnold Pinkney, as the man who could help solve Cleveland's problems. When Mayor Stokes was elected we had black pride, and to carry it on further we need another black man like Arnold Pinkney to help us to get black progress. Student participation was evident at this special called assembly. Rev. Jackson stood back, waved his hands and asked his young followers to repeat, I'm Somebody. 20 OLD FRIENDS TALKING IT OVER—Rev. This program is partially funded by the U.S. Gov't, and the Cleveland Board of Education. Students come from Sunbeam School, Pepper Pike, Lakewood and other surrounding schools. According to Mrs. Frances Johnson, head teacher, classes are offered in advanced mathematics, music history, and physical science. Some of our graduates are doing very well on their jobs, she says. Calvin Mayfield is a pre-law student at Morehouse, Glenda Jordan is studying at Kent, and James Jordan is working in the engineering department at City Hall. We congratulate this Special Kind of a Class in a special kind of way. LEARNING HAS NO OBSTACLES- as shown by Jean-nie Horn and Rosemary Porch. Swahili Continues To Grow One Swahili student asked his classmate, Jina Lako Nani? (what is your name). The other student replied, Jina Langu John (My name is John). Mwalinu Bwana Chivaura speaks very’ little English in his classes. One prominent author explains it this way. The instructor should use Swahili almost exclusively. He should resist the temptation to give explanations in English and decline answer any English questions. This forces the students to talk and think in the new language from the start. The students engage in research, conduct panel discussions, and rap1 in Kcswahili, whenever they find an opportune moment. Years ago some men wore root suits with reet plcets, bell bottom pants, double breasted suits, and buster brown shoes. Women wore sweaters, pleated skirts, bobby socks, fancy bracelets and earrings. We look back on those days and sometimes laugh at the styles, but who knows, someone may laugh at our mod styles in another ten years. AH, DIG MY MIDI ,-Carolyn Clark. The Black Awareness Week program held at the Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Branch Library, concluded with Mr. Earl Rowe as guest speaker. The program was sponsored by the Cleveland library in conjunction with John Hay's Social Studies Department. Mr. Robert Orr, department chairman, made the arrangements for John Hay students to participate in the week long celebration. Mr. Rowe’s topic was What Are You Going To Do About It? He encouraged the students to achieve success regardless of social pressures. PHOTO ABOVE: A WARM SEND OFF- After an inspiring lecture given by Earl Rowe, Mr. Robert Orr and Mr. John Campbell voice their approval. Speaking of the program's success, Mr. Orr replied If we were able to reach one student, the program was a success. PHOTO ABOVE: A LATE START- Jerome Lavender presents his views on Black Awareness , he saw it as a necessity to get black folk unified. He said it's like a party people come at 9:00 nobody's there so they leave and come back at 12:00. Everybody does it so at 12:00, the party starts when it could have started at 9:00 and had three more hours to jam. TUNED IN- Sabrina Dillard listened attentively as the speaker rapped to the students concerning choosing the right partner. Some of the fiery speaker's statements were hard hitting but most of the students remained and listened to every word. 120 Awards Assembly John Hay's semi-annual Awards Assembly was held in the school auditorium, Feb. 24, and 25th for the 10th, 11th, and 12th graders. There have been many times when you felt like giving up, but your faith and determination have paid off for you. It is true that our present economy looks dismal, but we must remember that more opportunities for black students arc opening now than ever before. In spite of social pressures, make every minute of your life count. Ralph Waldo Emerson was right when he said that this time, like all other times, is a very good one, if we but know what to do with it. I do hope that you will not become complacent. If you but show some enthusiasm you can move mountains. In other words, strive to do your best whatever you may pursue. I can't remember achieving anything great without some enthusiasm. Robert Browning wrote about a painter named Audrea DeSarto. He left this message for mankind, Ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp, or what is a heaven for? Ten years from now, I should like to read about your accomplishments. You are off to a good start and I hope you will reach your goal. Because you did not drop out of school, you have proven Alexander Pope's memorial lines to be true. He said, a little learning is a dangerous thing, drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring; There shallows draught intoxicate the brain, and drinking largely sobers us again. Speaking for the yearbook staff, we hope that you have enjoyed the 1972 yearbook. It was not always a bed of roses. There were many times when we felt that we were batting our heads against a stone wall. However, the final results show that it was well worth the efforts and endless hours that we worked to help make this publication a big success. Again thanks to Warren Hogue, who was like my right arm. His layout designs are shown throughout this annual. Our typists made fewer errors than in previous years. Also thanks to our faculty patrons and advertisers who came through with their financial assistance. Thanks to our seniors who purchased the book. Carload of thanks to Mr. Alex Rivera, Mr. Bob White, and Mr. John Campbell, school photographers, whose photographic creative ability helped to make our pages more attractive. Finally, seniors, be honest and sincere and remember the immortal words of Shakespeare's Hamlet, This above all; to thy ownself be true, and it must follow as the night the day, Thou cans't not be false to any man.
