John Hay Hits Quarter-Century Mark Although the official celebration of John Hay’s twenty-fifth anniversary was held May 20 this year, the school first opened its doors September 9, 1929, under the leadership of William L. Moore as principal. On that date in 1929, 1,829 pupils enrolled, most of them from Longwood, the commercial high school which Hay replaced. East side commercial students have been fortunate in the beauty and convenience of Hay’s University Circle location and in the fineness of the architectural design of the building. During its twenty-five years of existence Hay has gained nationwide recognition as an outstanding commercial high school. Named for Lincoln's secretary of state, a man of outstanding character and abilities, John Hay High School has completed its first quarter century in a spirit befitting its famous name. Services rendered by the Student Council cover a wide range of activities among which are the self-disciplined study halls, the information desk in the foyer, assistance in various drives such as the safety and community fund, and personal assistance to homeroom teachers, especially in caring for new students at the beginning of each semester, in work on grades, and in the details of the homeroom routine. Members of the Student Council are elected in two groups: one, consisting of even-numbered rooms in the spring semester: the other, consisting of odd-numbered rooms, in the fall semester. 38 STUDENT CITY MANAGER AND CABINET Adviser: Miss Marie McBride Student City Manager Marilyn Smith Director of Study Halls Grace Fricker Director of Finance Joan Barclay Director of Athletics Joan Baker Director of Athletics William Miller Director of Service Elizabeth Galambos Director of Service Evelyn Lewis School Store Manager Pat Jastrzebski Director of Corridor Guards Frances Romano Director of Recreation Toni Slovensky Director of Recreation LaVonne Smith The student city manager is chosen by a majority vote of the Student Council. CORRIDOR GUARD DIRECTORS Assisting visitors as well as our own students in locating rooms in the building, keeping the halls clean, and protecting students' property by seeing that lockers are really locked are some of the jobs that are undertaken by this organization. Composed of volunteer students who desire to serve their school, the corridor guards help to keep our school wheels turning. Each corridor guard is on duty at an assigned post one period each day. Directors in charge each period give the guards notices and instructions pertaining to their duties. About once a month general meetings are held for detailed instructions. These guards co-operate with other school organizations and do extra service work when called upon. It would never come out on time, pages would have neither plan nor balance, and the reporters would write about anything that happened to bounce into their minds. Attending to the make-up of the paper, deciding on and assigning stories, and seeing that everything is in on time are only a few of the headaches reserved for editors only. Meetings at which each secretary makes a complete report of his work and makes an account of all money which has been turned in by his homeroom are held regularly. HAYRIDE COMMITTEE Compiling the Hayride for the senior class is a year-long job. This time it has the added importance of being the first b x)k to be christened. She outwits them by pretending to be unbalanced and hides the money in a teddy bear. In the course of the story the step-children find the money, but it is restored to Mrs. Savage through the help of the other inmates. STAGECRAFTERS Doing the behind-the-scenes work for all dramatic productions and auditorium programs requires thorough co-operation among the workers of the Stagecraft Club. Pupils may join the club as volunteers, thus earning service points as well as special stagecraft awards for satisfactory work, or they can take it as a non-vocational course. Informality is one outstanding characteristic of the stagecraft class; activity with saws, hammers, paint, and pulleys is another. The Stagecraft Club was organized in 1930. Alice M. In all chorus work there is special attention given to the development of voices through the natural methods of gcxxl posture, clear diction, and proper breath control.
