'O' K J The Standing Naval Force Atlantic - STANAVFORLANT - was approved by the North Atlantic Counsel in Brussels in December, 1967. STANAVPORLANT became the world's first permanent, multi-national naval squadron operating in peacetime. STANAVPORLANT is made up of from five to nine destroyers or frigate type ships, operating continuously as a single unit. Ships are provided by the NATO navies normally operating in the Atlantic Ocean and are assigned to STANAVPORLANT for two to six months. Under the NATO pennant, the squadron carries out a program of scheduled national and international exercises and maneuvers. The combined force also makes many port visits to coastal cities of NATO member nations. In a typical year, the force will steam over 50,000 miles, and visit more than 25 ports in 11 countries. STANAVFORLANT is a bold example of international fellowship and cooperation among nations. The ships' crew perfect techniques of operating together by constant practice between ships, and by personnel exchanges within the force. JOHN HANCOCK is homeported in Charleston, South Carolina, and is assigned to Cruiser Destroyer Group TWO and Destroyer Squadron SIX. Designed and built by Ingalls Shipbuilding Division of Litton Industries in Pascagoula, Mississippi, JOHN HANCOCK is a member of the first major class of surface ships in the U.S. Navy to be powered by gas turbine engines. Four General Electric LM-2500 engines, marine versions of those used on DC-10 and C-5A aircraft, drive the ship at speeds in excess of 30 knots. Three smaller gas turbine engines provide the ship with up to six million watts of electrical power. Twin controllable-reversible pitch propellers provide JOHN HANCOCK with a degree of rnaneuverability unique among warships of her size. A highly versatile multi-mission destroyer, JOHN HANCOCK can operate independently or in company with Amphibious or Carrier Task Forces. Her overall length is 563 feet and she displaces 7800 tons. JOHN HANCOCK's primary mission is to operate offensively in an Antisubmarine Warfare role. JOHN HANCOCK's sonar, the most advanced underwater detection yet developed, is fully integrated into a digital naval tactical data system, providing the ship with faster and more accurate processing of target information. Integration of the ship's digital gun fire control system into the NTDS QNaval Tactical Data SystemJ provides quick reaction in the performance of the ship's mission areas of shore bombardment, surface warfare actions, and anti-aircraft warfare. Ships weapons include two MK 45 lightweight 5 inch guns, two triple barrel MK 32 torpedo tubes, an antisubma- rine rocket QASROCJ launcher, the HARPOON anti-ship cruise missile, the NATO Seasparrow Point Defense Missile System, and facilities for embarkation of antisubmarine helicopters. Space, weight, and electrical power reservations have been allocated in the design of the ships to provide for the addition of future weapons systems and enable JOHN HANCOCK to keep abreast of future technology. Although built for maximum combat effectiveness, crew comfort and habitability are an integral part of JOHN HANCOCK's design. Berthing compartments are spacious and the ship is equipped with amenities not usually found aboard destroyers, including a crew's lounge, library, hobby shop and gymnasium. Automated weapons and engineering systems permit operation of the ship, the size of a World War II light cruiser, by a crew of 23 officers, 26 chief petty officers and 270 other enlisted. One of the measures used to prevent fire was the smoking lamp a single flame lit for the entire ship. There each sailor could light his pipe and smoke under the watchful eye of the master-at-arms. Today our method of fire prevention is called R Division. But beyond the at sea fire party, R Divi- sion mans the Rescue and Assistance detail, the flight quarters detail, and the Nuclear Accidentflncident Team, and runs all the damage control repair lockers. They kept the administrative ends of the ship tied down and made things go smoothly for the whole crew. Such services as handling the delivery and re- ceipt of the mail, processing travel claims, ar- ranging flights for individual going home on emergency leave, transferring personnel, and sensing out the Family Gram were necessary for our wellbeing. Other facets of the division, such as career counseling, medical treatment, and master-at-arms duties, were vital to the day-to- day functioning of the ship.
