SC-1 DIVISION SC-1 division comprises members of the Quar- ter Master and Signalman ratings. Naval Quarter Masters assist the navigation officer in navigating the ship from homeport to the Mediterranean Sea, Indian Ocean and around the world. Navigation is the process of directing the movements of a craft from one point to an- other. To do this job safely is an art. In some 6000 years, man has transformed this art to a science. The science of navigating uses such means as visual aids, radar ranges, celestial bodies and var- ious forms of electronic equipment to FIX our position. QM's are precise and proud of the job they do! The Signalman rating is one of the oldest in the navy. The first form of nautical comms con- tinues in importance to the present. The signal bridge handles all visual comms from flag hoist to semaphore and flashing light. In many re- spects, these methods are far superior to radio, especially when the command of electronic si- lence is put into effect. Our job requires self confidence and enthusiasm.
