PRINCIPAL ' S MESSAGE John Glenn High School has become rec- ognized as an exemplary school through- out the State of California. The credit for this honor goes to the students, staff, and parents of our school community. A brief journey through the pages of our year- book brings to reality all of the marvelous facts of our school. It is truly a school of which all of us can be proud. It takes a very special talent to capture the essence of a school that is rich in activities and in human feelings. It is my feeling that our yearbook staff has been able to give a pic- torial impression of our school. They have done so through good planning, intelli- gent decisions, and a tremendous amount of time. A very special thanks goes to the yearbook staff and to our yearbook advi- sor, Mr. Richard Garcia, and to our editor, Elaine Cabrera. Thank you for a great yearbook! Elias Galvan- Principal Ms. dejulio chats with Mr. Galvan during a quiet moment on campus. 18 Faculty Staff ( was indeed a pleasure to return to John Glenn High School. Department completely changed its image; we were now entirely computerized and were chosen by the State as a Model Business Department. We received a substantial grant from the State and used the funds to install a new computer lab with 11 IBM PC ' s and appropriate software for all classes in the department. These, together with our 15 Commodore 8032 ' s, TRS 80, Apple 2 computers, memory and electronic typewriters and calculators, offered business students the opportunity to train on equipment currently used in business and indus- try. Classes were offered in word processing, computer data entry, computerized accounting, office occupations, office management, recordkeeping, jobs, shorthand, business Eng- lish, and typing — all utilizing this excellent equipment. Whether a student was planning to enter the world of work immediately after graduation or get a part-time job while attending college, the Business Department provided the training needed in today ' s job market. 1. Time out. 2. Typing can be so interest- ing. 3. Working with calculators and learning math. 4. Shorthand can be fun shar- ing it with a friend. 5. Students learning business together. 6. In the future we hope to offer more sections of the 8th grade home- making class which is a combination of foods, clothing and related areas. The 9th and 10th grades had a choice of the comprehensive Teen Living course or clothing. A real thrust was to increase enrollment in the 11th and 12th grade classes of On Your Own and Parent- ing . These courses covered relation- ships, family management and budget- ing, parenting skills and family rela- tions. Academics 125 Under The Microscope Happy teachers, smiling students, gophers, frogs., and Marvin Mole. There was always a hum of activity as the students did science . Dropping rocks and sagging slinkies contributed to the understanding of scientific concepts and to the fun of working together. The science teachers were always there . . snack, lunch and after school. They helped each other and the doors were always open to the students. This friendly environment attracted others who were interested in science educa- tion and we often saw visitors leaving the building with renewed enthusiasm. Ms. Starnes, Mr. Usher and Mr. Olguin constantly had a field trip or special project on their calendar. Mrs. Agatep was an encyclopedia of helpful advice and Ms. Barrett and Ms. Neufeld were indeed pleased to have that friendly encyclopedia right at their back door. The teachers in rm. 1102, Mr. Vanags and Ms. Frawley, finally figured out how to repair the telescope and Ms. Watt and Mrs. Hughlett claimed they should have been the first in line to see Halley ' s Comet. After all, Ms. Hughlett videotaped all the Comet programs and Ms. Watt ' s students did all the Comet drawings! The motto of the science Department was DO SCIENCE . The students were glad because: if teachers TELL students FORGET if teachers SHOW students MIGHT REMEMBER if students are INVOLVED they UNDERSTAND!!! and real learning takes place! 1. Correcting papers is part of Mrs. Hughlett ' s daily work. 2. Mrs. Agatep ' s class watching a science vid- eo. 3. Andre Del fin pointing out parts of the human body. 4. Mrs. Lois Wilson was the Secondary Fine Arts Mentor, Mr. Wil- son and Ms. de Julio were creating a video library for the Visual and Performing Arts through a CTIIPS grant, Mrs. Edwards was a Secondary Mentor working in Fine Arts and Video development and most of the Glenn Fine Arts Dept. were involved in a Fine Arts Task Force at the district develop- ing a new Fine Arts class for the district for 86-87 . This year we presented our 2nd. Fine Arts Faire in May. The department organizied and brought to the Glenn campus 2 theatre programs, Jim Ryan ' s one man show and the wonderful Oregon Shakespeare Festival Actors from Ashland. Again this year, members of the perform- ing Arts were involved in the California Thespians with two students elected to state office, Alecia Hannum and Stacy Brewer and on the State Thespians Board, Ms. de Julio. Academics 127 World Of Different Languages Glenn ' s Foreign Language Department was small, but continued to grow. Five years ago there was one teacher (Ron Renison) in the department, and Spanish only language offered. Currently there are five sections of French, four of German, and eleven of Spanish; and we expected to reach many more students in the future. The need for citizens who can communicate effectively in foreign language, as well as feel at ease in understanding foreign cultures, has finally been recognized. Conse- quently, there is a movement throughout the nation to provide communication-based instruction in foreign languages. In California, the state Board of Education has established model curriculum standards that reflect the principles of this movement. Also, one year of foreign language or of visual and performing arts has been included in the new high school graduation requirements. At the university level, oral profi- ciency tests are being developed for use in placing students in foreign language courses. In the past, articulation in the study of foreign language from high school to the university has been lacking, and placement has been left up to the individual. During the 1985-86 school year our language teachers attended workshops to learn both the theory and the practical aspects of communication-based instruction. Our goal was to implement changes next year that will bring our courses in line with the state ' s standards and prepare our students to meet university proficiency require- ments. One of our district ' s two foreign language mentor teachers, Frieda Schegetz from Glenn, was selected as a representative of Region 12 (which includes Los Angeles County) at California ' s Foreign Language Curriculum Implementation Cen- ter. After attending three training sessions, the members of each regional team had the responsibility of developing a plan of action to improve foreign language pro- grams and provide staff development opportunities for foreign language teachers in their region. Met- al working, and Woodworking. The shops had exception- ally fine equipment, comparable to what is found job sites. It all added up to a training program that can get a young man or woman ready for a job after high school graduation. The Electronics program, taught by Mr. Hauske intro- duced students to the mysterious world inside the stereo and television set. You learned what makes each of those great sounds and pictures. You learned how to make electrical measurements, how to assemble and repair electronic circuits, and how to test parts. The highlight of each course was making take home projects. Strobe lights, color organs, the sound switch, the lamp dimmer, and the ever popular burglar alarm were among the many projects available in your electronics classes. Ah the wonderful world of woodworking, taught by Mr. Monroe, from beginner to cabinetmaker apprentice, from hand tools to advanced machinery, from sticks to turned timbers, from band hewn hobby to handsome heir- loom, from Knots to Knick-Knacks, from massive; all this and more when working in the wonderful world of wood. In the Jewelry class you learned to make rings, charms, earrings, key fobs, and many other fun, high quality metal articles, all taught by Mr. Wright. Metalworking classes introduced a variety of skills that included lathe and milling machine operations, gas and arc welding, and foundry and bench metal techniques. Many students took their new skills and made weight lifting benches, dumb bells, bird cages and engine stands. In drafting you learned to make the drawings that are used in manufacturing and construction trades. If you interested in engineering careers this was a good place to start. Mr. Mollis and Mr. Monroe taught the drafting The Automotive Mechanics classes were taught through the ROP by Mr. Householder. Here was a first class me- chanic teaching you how to repair your own car. Our motto is: We fix anything and everything. 1. I stand by my work. 2. Lets just give it up! 3. This was due to a very fine staff of teachers and also recent curriculum changes. An integrated honors program had been a goal and this school year that goal was accomplished. An honors class was offered at each grade level, culminating with advanced placement class at the senior level. Approximately 175 Glenn students participated in the Language Arts Honors program. 1. Academics 131 Having Fun With Numbers Many times it has been said, Numbers are the name of the game, meaning that there is little in life that is outside the arena of numbers; or in a more sopbi • Mathematics. Even though we may accept the premise of the first state- t it is still possible to find groups of people on earth who have Just two words nting vocabulary; a single word forone and another wordformany. It is difficult to imagine that in this same world we have computers capable of highly complex calculations in a fraction of a second. Mathematics is certainly important, as much a part of life for humans as water is for fish. It was refreshing to see the recent interest in Mathematics continue to expand. Industry, government and society in general were all increasing their support for the development of a Mathematics conscious society. Approximately 80% of our student body enrolled in math and computer courses. A concerned effort was jade to provide teachers with material support and ideas for improving This is also a timely opportunity to say, Thank You to the excellent staff of teachers in the Math Department who taught in areas such as Fundamentals of Math, Math Analysis or Computer Programming. We appreciate your efforts toward assisting students toward increased achievement in Mathematics which may lead them to greater The future- who can really tell what lies ahead? Th classes were jvailahle to students at least lo years of age or at the Junior or senior level. ROP was designed to provide stu- dents with the basic skills required for a particular job. In some cases, students participated in community classroom in- ternship training in local businesses and industries. When a student successfully completed an ROP course and performed the required job tasks, credit and grades were given bv the high school district. At John Glenn, there were five ROP classes: Word Processing, Foreign Car Repair, Cabinet-Making, Computer Data Entry, and Machine Tool. ROP had an enrollment of over three hundred in its on-campus classes. With more people learning of ROP, enrollment grew in all areas. A variety of classes were offered through ROP, including Bank Teller Training, Hospital Careers. Restaurant Industry Careers, Cosmetology, Retail Merchandising, and Child Care. The diversity of courses offered by the Southeast ROP made the program interesting and extremely helpful to those who wanted to learn new skills or polish up their existing ones. - f r 1. Academics 133 SfliP ' Reading: Insight To The Woric The Reading Department served three different elements: The 8th Grade Core, the 9-12 grade program, and the Bilingual classes. We not only offered classes for students with clinical reading problems, but developed reading skills of students who read near grade level. We also improved the skills of students reading be- yond grade level. We further offered enrichment classes, such as Speed Reading and Advanced Reading Comprehension for 9-12 grade students reading at or beyond grade level. The Reading Lab was an integral part of the 8th grade Core Program, the 9-12 grade program and Bilingual classes. The core had first priority to utilize the Reading Lab. The students rotated into the reading lab to work on prescribed indi- vidual needs in phonics, vocabulary, literal and interpretive comprehension skills. 1. Students learn the modern way. 2. We were fortunate to have assembled a staff who were helpful and encouraged our students while still hav- ing firm control. Among the outstanding special programs we had were a special counseling program, a separate attendance program and an alternative program for students who couldn ' t fit into the regular classroom routine. This year we had our own administrator and a new counselor. This almost completed our School within a School concept. We planned a number of special activities this year to honor students with good attendance, grades, and citi- zenship. 1. Learning about our country. 2. Two heads are better than one. 3. It takes concentration. 4. Future Homecoming queen 5. It ' s not easy being an 8th grader. 6. I know that answer. Academics 135 Looking Over The Past The major change in our department for 1985-1986 was the introduction of a new course: World Cultures: West. This course replaced World Geogra- phy and Western Civilization. We also had a District Curriculum Guide for all courses in our department. As a result of legislation signed by Gover- nor Deukmajian, we changed Senior Studies for next year to stress econom- ics more than has been done in the 1. Something ' s in my eyes. 2. Now where was I. 3. Boy is this interesting! 4. Come on Mr. Walker, take it. 5. I got an A! 6. That ' s not the way it happened. 7. Mr. Candolfo comes back as a guest lecturer. 8. Our department made some big changes. We had one less section this year. The eventual goal was to eliminate most special education classes. The regular classroom teachers could give enough support to our students to provide for their needs. We continued trying to develop new projects. Our stu- dents were capable and needed job skills. One of our projects was having our students work with the computers. We tried word processing in an attempt to familiarize our students with the computer and encourage them to take related courses in college. It Shall Be Written f2 SOMOOla Homecoming Highjinx John Glenn ' s best week arrived with a big bang. Monday started off well; many of our students turned into nerds. Tuesday the campus went back to the 60 ' s (Hippie Day). Wednesday we were overrun with tourists. On Thursday big and small families gath- ered for their feasts on Family Picnic Day. The week ended with Eagles showing their spirit and pride by wear- ing our school colors red, white, and blue. Thanks to everybody who showed their spirit during Homecom- ing Week! 1. Would you marry into this family? 2. Linda Chavez and Memo Urquidi Just in for a week of R R. 3. This family just came as they were. 4. Who said the sixties were dead? 5. The sign says Tourist , but they look like a bunch of NERDS to me! 6. Gloria Guerrero seeking donations for Homecoming Court. School Life 177 Viewing Hallowee r Images from different eras. How much will you give for this one? We sure do make a cute couple! Don ' t worry, we ' ll win next year! Scott Nelson, contest winner. In you go, I caught you this time. Spirit This year ' s Halloween was a total suc- cess at John Glenn, as most of our student body participated in showing their spirit. As the years go by we get more and more into the spirit of Hal- loween. We had many original customes such as pumpkins, pirates, cavewomen, monsters, policemen, witches, scare- crows, and even a Mod. It was nice to see students get involved in spirited activities such as this, in a positive, fun manner. 1. Aren ' t we gorgeous? 2. Where did I leave my broom? 3. Unknown species. 4. Mafia member poses for camera. 5. We ' re just clowning around. School Life 179 A Night In The Gym Sports night was one of those nights when we just wanted to get away from it all and spend an evening with friends. Several games were available that night. There was ping-pong, vol- leyball and basketball. It turned out to be a pretty good evening. By the look on their faces everyone had a good time. 1. There ' s always time for homework! 2. You guys are playing too rough! 3. Madonna ' s latest step 4. HI THERE!!! 5. Give me back my shirt, man! 6. Darn fly! 180 School Life Pride In Student Involvement Throughout the year our student body participated in many activities on and off campus. As our A.S.B. officers strove to make our school belter, the students went out and helped to make our community brighter. Some examples of these fine activities were done through fundraisers visits to Convalescent homes and pinatas for elementary students. Not only did the community benefit from the services, but our school bene- fited by gaining the recognition it deserves. 1. This kind of involvement we can do without. 2. Ballet Folkorico at their annual Thanksgiving meal. 3. The Seniors give a pizza party to raise money for color in the yearbook. 4. Mr. Galvan sends off the Mecha Club to go Christmas caroling. 5. F.B.L.A. lends a helping hand. 6. The superintendent meets with the members of the A.S.B. Cabinet from all 4 high schools. 7. The Fashion and Service Club give elementary students a Christmas pihata. We had the biggest crowds ever. As pep units per- formed and the band played, the students anxiously awaited the spirit competitions. Some of the activities included egg passing, tug-of-war and the grab bag. Then came the Spirit Stick. It was tough to decide the win- ners. Even the Eighth Graders got into the spirit. Next, the band played the Alma-Mat- er, and everyone showed his her loyalty to John Glenn. This year the Student Body brought back an old tradition, The Senior rise . At the end of all the rallies, the Seniors were first to leave. We hoped that next year there wil l be as much spirit as there was this year. 1. We wanna fly like an Eagle! 2. Of Fans Screaming and waving frantical- ly as a star athlete scored another point for the home team, decked out in school colors, sharing friendships while showing en- thusiasm, a lively group could be found at athletic events, assem- blies, and pep rallies. At games the stands were always packed with students, teachers, friends and parents cheering our team on and ready for victory. The games were fun and exciting in themselves, but equally as impor- tant were the fans who showed up time after time, win or lose. Without the cheers and frantic shouts and waves from the stands, the event just wouldn ' t have been the same. School Life 185 ' ' A Tribute To Theatre 186 Student Life The first show of the ' 85-86 drama season was aptly named A Tribute to Theatre. The three One Acts are all about some aspect of acting. Impromptu is set on a dimly lit stage where 4 actors have been called by the stage manager to appear on stage for what? No one knows. The 2nd Act is a set of short scenes written by young authors in a work shop. The show deals with Glimpses of life as seen through the eyes of this generation. The final act is The Actor ' s Nightmare. The title tells all to most aspiring young actors. Have you ever dreamed you were on stage and you didn ' t know the lines . . . or the play? George knows what it ' s like - he walked into a theatre and found everyone thinks he is the replacement for another actor who ' s been in an accident. He can ' t convince anyone he doesn ' t belong there - they just keep on acting! 1. The moment of truth for Jody Salter as Tony. 2. Scott Nelson as Tony with Becky Whitley as Winifred. 3. They were outstand- ing, not only in attendance, but also finan- cially. It seemed like everyone who attend- ed the dances had a good time dancing, or just listening to the music. The Halloween Dance was almost every- one ' s favorite, because it was a chance to play dress-up. Sadie Hawkins was a time for it all! A time to dance or to help one of the many clubs that participated. In December the 8th graders had their very first dance. It was a chance to socialize with kids their own age. This year ' s dances seemed to have brought many people together. 188 School Life 1. 8th graders get into the groove. 2. This is the way to really dance! 3. The ghouls come out at night. 4. I would hate to be that poor chicken. 5. That ' s not what I wanted for Christmas. 6. Dancing is what it ' s all about! 7. Okay, Okay, we ' re almost ready!!! A Night Of Glamour Wh It was time once again for our Annual Christmas Dance, and as usual it was a big success. The night began as couples arrived at the La Mirada Country Club. The guys were in their dashing tuxedos while the girls equaled or outdid them in their dresses. Everyone danced and enjoyed themselves through the night and to cool off, couples went out for romantic interludes on the terrace. Finally, the moment ar- rived. It was time to announce our 1985 Christmas Court. Ev- eryone was anxious, listening intensively as our Queen was announced. Miss Debbie Nelson reigned graciously through the rest of the evening. 1. Oh, to be young again! 2. Donna crowning our 1985-t Queen 3. Kiss me you fool!!! 4. Hey, what ' s so funny? 5. Love your dress. 6. You want me to dance? I ' m cheerleader. School Life 189 Being chosen for the Christmas Queen was one of the most exciting and memorable experiences of my entire hfe. I know I will remember it for the rest of my life. Dedicating a yearbook is no easy chore. Out of the many wonderful, deserving people on a high school campus, the field has to be narrowed down to one. The 85- 86 Patriot Staff agonized over this decision, because there were so many qualified candidates at our school who deserved the honor of being recognized in this important capacity. Our choice this year was based on criteria that covered areas such as: dedication, expert e in teaching area, contribution to the school, service to students outside the clxsroom as well as in, and most importantly, love of teaching and for the students whose lives he she affects so greatly. The 85-86 Patriot is dedicated to a staff member who was born in Canada, but came to the United States with her family in 1956. She graduated from Monte- hello High School, attended East Los Angeles College, earned her B.A. in geogra- phy at Cal State Los Angeles and is currently working on a master ' s degree at Cal State University Fullerton. Her studies have taken her to other college campuses in the pursuit of knowledge in such diverse areas from the study of oceans and energy to the status of women in forestry. Her teaching experiences include the teaching of chemistry, physical, earth and life science, geometry, first aid and health, and several years of advising the drill team. She has been with Nor- walk La Mirada Unified since 1972 having taught at Los Alisos before coming to Glenn in 1973. She also taught in the Bellflower School District. Her combined educational experiences are too numerous to mention, but over the years she has emerged as a true leader amongst the John Glenn faculty. She has participated in and chaired many school and district level committees. She is active in several professional organizations including the National Science Teachers Association. All this adds up to a wealth of benefit for John Glenn students. She took groups on weekend field studies throughout the year, participated in several television programs concerning education, did research and visitations with the petroleum industry and was in constant contact with colleges and universities where many of our graduates attend. She and her husband David were so strongly committed to John Glenn, they saw fit to send their two sons, Dennis and Tom, to Glenn, Both graduated from our school With the greatest of pride and respect, the Patriot staff dedicates Volume XXIV of the Patriot to one of John Glenn ' s finest, Rita Slarnes. 1. The inimitable Mrs. Starnes shows the stuff she ' s made of. 2. Mrs. Starnes relaxes in the outdoors she loves so much. 3. A pretty pose in a traditional folk costume. 4. Her interest in animals goes back a ways. 5. Probably the only time in her life that Mrs. Starnes didn ' t smile. 6. The Starnes family: Tom, David, Rita, and Dennis. f I t A Special Thanks!! No year is ouer . As the editor of the 85-86 Patriot, I would like to thank all the people who made this book happen. To Ms. Dejulio-we appreciated all the beautiful art work you did for us, especially under such short notice; to all the understanding teachers who let us out of class countless times to finish deadlines; to VVally, Tony Donna for working beyond what was reasonable developing all our rolls of film on time for us to meet our deadlines; to Ms. Lane, Mr. Ponce, and Mr. Galvan for all their help and support; to our representative from Jostens, Mr. Buzz Ponze for his special attention to all our needs; a special thanks to the staff for all the long hours they put in during and after school to make sure we completed all deadlines on time; to my two assistant editors, Patricia Montes and Sonja Viveros, a great big thanks for helping me make sure everybody was working towards completing their assignments; and to Mr. Garcia, our Advisor, for always checking up on us and making sure we did things right. Well, the end has finally come and we ' re on our way to the real worldi of hard work, pain and strife to become what we ' ve so many years longed to become. Yet we ' ll always treasure the memories of the fun, laughter and hard work we went through while in high school to try and make a decent grade in all of our classes. We hope this book adds to many fond memories in years to come. Congratulations to the class of 1986 and Good Luck in everything you do! Euen though upe depart we ' re together in Heart! if it leaues memories. The Class Of 1086 Remember there will be a supplement to add to your book in September.
