'S' X Group Two Rear Admiral E. j. Carroll, fr., was born 2 December 1923 in hliami, Arizona. Ile graduated from Bell High Schggl, Bell, California, and attended CALTECII prior to entering the Navy as an .flviation Cadet on 20 july 1943 at Los Angeles, California. Following completion of flight training, he was designated a Naval .flviator and commissioned as an Ensign in the U. S. Naval Reserve on I .-lpril 1945. Ile was appointed to a regular commission in the U. S. Navy in 1947 and has served in a wide variety of operational assignments since that time. Highlights include two tours of combat duty in the Korean Campaign as a pilot in an. .V-1-I SKYRAIDER Squadron, flying from the aircraft carriers USS BOXER, USS lf'.4I,LEY FORGE and the USS PHILIPPINE SEA. He has also served as Navigator of the Flagship of the Commander :Uiddle East Task Force, Maintenance Officer offlttaclc Squadron 176 and as Operations Officer and Executive Officer of the aircraft carrier, USS KITTY H.r1WK, His auiatign commands were both A-'I SKYIIAWK Squadrons, let flttaclf Squadrons 36 and 113. During the Vietnam Campaign he commanded the USS OCIJEN KLPD-51 which engaged in a series of amphibious assault operations in Vietnam. Subsequently he became the Commanding Officer of USS .11IlJW.il Y fCV.'1-112, once again returning to Vietnam waters for combat operations there. Upon completion of two years aboard USS ,1llIIllN:IY, Hear Admiral Carroll was assigned as Deputy Chiefo c , I Staff for Operations and Plans on the Staff of Commander in Chief, U. S. Naval Forces Europe, in London, England During this tour of duty he was selected for and appointed to the ranlf of Rear fldmiral, U. S. Navy on I November 1972.
