Captain Mitchell assumed command of USS JOHN F. KENNEDY fCV-672 on 29 November 1975. Graduating from the Naval Academy in 1952, Captain Mitchell entered flight training and was designated a Naval Aviator in 1953. ln 1954, he reported for sea duty with Fighter Squadron ONE NINETY THREE and flew F211-3's during deployments aboard USS ORISKANY and USS YORKTOWN. Captain Mitchell then attended Test Pilot School at Patuxent River, Maryland, in 1957, and conducted air- craft carrier suitability projects with the Flight Test Division, Returning to sea duty in 1960, he joined Fighter Squadron SEVENTY-FOUR and flew the F-4 Phantom during deployments aboard USS FORRESTA L. ln early 1964, he reported for duty as Aide to Commander Naval Air Force, U. S. Atlantic Fleet Returning to sea duty in 1965, he reported to Fighter Squadron THIRTY-THREE as Executive Officer and flew F-4's dur' ing deployments aboard USS AMERICA, Completing the tour in 1967 as Commanding Officer. Attending the U. S. Army War College, from 1967 to 1968, he then served overseas in Southeast Asa w'th t t Commander Attach Carrier Striking Force, U. S. Seventh Fleet for one year. Returning to Southeast Asia as Commander Attack Carrier Wing NINE, Captain Mitchell flew F-4 ,A-7 and A-6 aircraft aboard USS AMERICA until 1971. flshore once again, he served with Commander Naval Air Force, Pacific Fleet staff as Wing and Force Train- ing Officer until mid-1972 followed by two years Service in the Office of the De ut Ch' N l p y tef of ava Operations ffltr Warfarej as the F-111 FOMCA 1 fighter aircraft Program Coordinator. Returning to sea duty in 19711, Captain Mitchell served as Commanding Officer of USS SYLVANIA f.fIFS-21, and completed a seven month Mediterranean deployment prior to assuming command of USS j0HN F. Captain Jerry 0. T attle, USN Commanding 0 ficer Captain Tuttle assumed command of USS JOHN F. KENNEDY KCV-672 on May 14, 1977. Captain jerry O. Tuttle enlisted in the Navy in February 1955. Shortly thereafter he was selected for the Naval Aviation Cadet KNAVCADX Program. He reported to Pensacola, Florida in july 1955, and was designated a Naval Aviator upon completion of flight training in October 1956. Assignments in Captain Tuttle's career inclu.de: Staff of Commander Naval Air Force, U. S. Atlantic Fleet, Commanding Officer and Executive Officer, Attack Squadron EICHTY-ONE, Executive Officer, Attack Squadron ONE HUNDRED SEVENTY-FOUR, Aide and Flag Lieutenant to Commander in Chief, U. S. Pacific Fleet, Instruc- tor, Attack Squadron. FORTY-FOUR, Maintenance Officer, Attack Squadron FIFTEEN fduring this tour he flew 210 combat missions over North Vietnamjg Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, Washington, D. C., Attack Squadron ONE HUNDRED TWELVE, and Fighter Squadron ONE HUNDRED TWELVE. Prior to his tour as Com- manding Officer of USS KA LAMAZ00 KAOR-61, he had command of Attack Carrier A ir Wing THREE in USS SARA- TOCA fCV-60j. Captain Tuttle made his one-thousandth arrested carrier landing aboard USS SARATOCA in january 1975. In fuly 1961, Captain Tuttle attended the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, where he attended the postgraduate and undergraduate schools simultaneously. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Communications Engineering in fune 1963. In 1968, he attended the Naval War College at Newport, Rhode Island. He received his Masters Degree in International Relations with honors from the Command and Staff school in July 1969. Captain Tuttle has been awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses, two Meritorious Service Medals, twenty- three Air Medals f18 Strike flight and five individual awardsj, four Navy Commendation Medals and various other campaign medals. Captain Tuttle, a A12-year-old native of Hatfield, Indiana, is married to the former Ifarbara Honifay of Pensa cola, Florida. They have five children.
