USS ,lohn E. Kennedy KCV-672 was named for the thirty-fifth President of the United States, fohn E. Kennedy. The heel was laid October 22, 1964, at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company yards in Virginia. President Kennedy's daughter, Caro- line, christened the ship on May 227, 1967 in ceremonies held at Newport News, Virginia. On September 7, 1968, KENNEDY was commissioned as an active ship of the Navy and joined the Attack Carrier Strilfing Force of the U. S. Atlantic Fleet. KENNEDY first deployed to the U. S. Sixth Eleet in the .Uediterranean Sea in flpril 1969, as a CVA. ln September 1970, and in response to a deteriorating situation in the Middle East, KENNEDY was ordered with no prior warning to proceed to the Mediterranean.For outstanding service during this major deployment, the ship received the Meritorious Unit Commendation. Addi- tionally KENNEDY was awarded the Atlantic Fleet's attack carrier Battle Efficiency Award for the period january 1970 to june 1971. KENNEDY sailed to the Mediterranean in December 1971 for what was to have been a normal six-month deployment. Increased activity in the war in Southeast :lsia and changes in the schedules of other carriers caused this deployment to be extended three times and the ship finally returned to the United States in Uctober 1972. During this period of extended operations, KEN- NEDY expanded her involvement with the naval forces of our allies and the deployment culminated with participation in the major NATO exercise Strong Express in the Norwegian and North Seas. The ship's fourth Mediterranean cruise began in April 1973. During the deployment, KENNEDY was awarded her second consecutive Battle Efficiency .-lward among the .fltlantic Fleet aircraft carriers. High- lights of the deployment included the visit of Prince juan Carlos of Spain, hosting the change of command ceremonies for the Commander, U. S. Sixth Fleet, parti- cipation in the NATO exercise Swift Move in the Norwegian and North Seas, and KENNEDY's first visit to a North Atlantic port, Edinburgh, Scotland. .-1 lthough the ship was scheduled to return to the states following this visit, KENNEDY remained at sea for 50 consecutive days before finally returning to Norfolk, Va. in December 1973. In .Uarch 197-1 KENNEDY steamed into the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Va. for her first major overhaul. While in the yards she was awarded her third consecutive Battle Efficiency :lward for january 1973 to june 1974 and also received the .llajorie Sterrett Battle- ship Eund :lward for operational excellence. KENNEDY was modified during her overhaul to carry the Navy's newest aircraft, the E-1-I Tomcat and the S-3A Viking. After worhf ups with her new aircraft and shipboard modifications KENNEDY again deployed to the Mediter- ranean, where she partieipated in various national,N.4 T0 and binational exercises. ln September 1976 KENNEDY deployed to the North .-ltlantic for participation in large scale Ng-ITO exercises 'Teamwork 76' and 'Bonded 1tern.' Before returning to Norfolk in November, KENNEDY visited Edinburgh, Scotland, uilhelrnshaven, Germany. Portsmouth, England, and lirest, France. Un january 1.3, 1977. Captain Mitchell assumed command of USS JOHN F. KENNEDY fCV-672 on 29 November 1975. Graduating from the Naval Academy in 1952, Captain Mitchell entered flight training and was designated a Naval Aviator in 1953. ln 1954, he reported for sea duty with Fighter Squadron ONE NINETY THREE and flew F211-3's during deployments aboard USS ORISKANY and USS YORKTOWN. Captain Mitchell then attended Test Pilot School at Patuxent River, Maryland, in 1957, and conducted air- craft carrier suitability projects with the Flight Test Division, Returning to sea duty in 1960, he joined Fighter Squadron SEVENTY-FOUR and flew the F-4 Phantom during deployments aboard USS FORRESTA L. ln early 1964, he reported for duty as Aide to Commander Naval Air Force, U. S. Atlantic Fleet Returning to sea duty in 1965, he reported to Fighter Squadron THIRTY-THREE as Executive Officer and flew F-4's dur' ing deployments aboard USS AMERICA, Completing the tour in 1967 as Commanding Officer. Attending the U. S. Army War College, from 1967 to 1968, he then served overseas in Southeast Asa w'th t t Commander Attach Carrier Striking Force, U. S. Seventh Fleet for one year.
