COMMANDING OFFICER USS JOHN F K Captain Vlhlliam A. Gureck, a native of West Hempstead, New York, joined the Navy in 1946. After two years of study at Columbia University and flight training, he was designated a Naval Aviator in 1950. He then served with Fighter Squadrons ELEVEN and TWELVE, a year as flight instructor in Corpus Christi, Texas, and two years with the Navy's BLUE ANGELS. ln 1957 a tour as Flight Deck Officer on SARATOGA preceded duty as Operations Off- icer, Fighter Squadron FIFTY-ONE. He attend- ed the Naval War College during 1961-1962. Study at Naval Post-graduate School at Mont- erey led to a Bachelor of Science degree in March 1964. In June 1964 he reported to Attack Carrier Air Wing FIVE as Operations Officer and completed a tour in Southeast Asia. Two addit- ional tours in Southeast Asia followed, first as Executive. Officer then Commanding Officer of Fighter Squadron FIFTY-THREE aboard TICON- DEFlOGA'and HANCOCK. ln 1967 he was head, Aviation Junior Officer Assignment Section in the Bureau of Naval Personnel. He returned to PACFLT in 1968 for additional tours aboard ORISKANY as Commander, Attack Carrier Air Wing NINETEEN and Commander Carrier Di- vision SEVEN Operations Officer. Following a tour is Executive Assistant to Director, Navy Program Planning he reported in September 1972 to USS SHREVEPORT lLPD-12l as Commanding Officer. Captain Gureck reported to KENNEDY from a tour as Assistant Chief of Staff for Readiness with Commander, Naval Air Force, Atlantic Fleet. While Commanding Officer of the KENNEDY, Captain Gureck was selected for advancement to the rank of Rear Admiral. His awards include the Legion of Merit l3l, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, Meri- torious Service Medal, Air Medal l25l and the Navy Commendation Medal l5l. Captain Gureck is married to the former Miss Phyllis Rein of North East, Pennsylvania. They reside in Norfolk with their two children, Scott and Kristin. -Q7
