Rear Admiral Eugene J. Carroll, Jr., was born 2 December 1923 in Miami, Arizona. He grad- uated from Bell High School, Bell, California, and attended CALTECH prior to entering the Navy as an Aviation Cadet on 20 July 1943 at Los Angeles, California. Following completion of flight training, he was designated a Naval Aviator and commissioned as an Enisgn in the U. S. Naval Reserve on 1 April 1945. He was appointed to a regular commission in the U. S. Navy in 1947 and hasnserved in a wide variety of operational assignments since that time. High- lights include two tours of combat duty in the Korean Campaign as a pilot in an A-1 SKY- RAIDER Squadron, flying from the aircraft car- riers USS BOXER, USS VALLEY FORGE and the USS PHILIPPINE SEA. He has also served as Navigator of the Flagship of the Commander Middle East Task Force, Maintenance Officer of Attack Squadron 176 and as Operations Off- icer and Executive Officer of the aircraft carrier, USS KITTY HAWK. His aviation commands were both A-4 SKYHAWK Squadrons, Jet Attack Squadrons 36 and 43. During the Vietnam Cam- paign he commanded the USS OGDEN lLPD-5l which engaged in a series of amphibious assault operations in Vietnam. Subsequently he became the Commanding Officer of USS MIDWAY lCVA 41l, once again returning to Vietnam waters for combat operations there. Upon completion of two years aboard USS MIDWAY, Rear Admiral Carroll was assigned as Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Plans on the Staff of Commander in Chief, U. S. Naval Forces Europe, in London, England. Dur- ing this tour of duty he was selected for and appointed to the rank of Rear Admiral, U. S. Navy on 1 November 1972. He next assumed dual duties as Assistant Deputy Chief of Naval Oper- ations lManpower Planning and Programmingl, and Assistant Chief of Naval Personnel lPersonnel Planning and Programmingl. RADM Carroll assumed duties as Commander Attack Carrier Striking Force, SIXTH Fleet lCTF 60llCommand- er Carrier Group TWO on 14 July 1975. He also commands the NATO Attack Carrier Striking Force lCTF 502l. Rear Admiral Carroll is a graduate of the U. S. Navy General Line School, U. S. Naval War College lC8iSl, and the U. S. Army War College at Carlisle Barracks. He holds BA and MA degrees from George Washington University. His awards include the Legion of Merit with two Gold Stars, Bronze Star Medal with Gold Star and Combat V, four awards of the Air Medal and numerous unit citations and cam- paign medals. He is married to the former Margaret Steffen of Northumberland, Pennsylvania. They have one son, Dennis.
