1 l l 9 a f +, 'Lg 'S J U .- Y 1 ni Captain John C. DiX0l'1, Jr. assumed command of USS JOHN F. KENNEDY iCVA-67l on November 30, 1972. Prior to coming to Kennedy, Captain Dixon served as Commanding Officer of the oiler USS CANISTEO lA0-99l, and serv- ed in the Office of Program Appraisal, Navy Department. Captain Dixon was graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1949 and was commissioned an ensign. In October of that year, he reported for flight train- ing and was designated a Naval Aviator in January 1951. Captain Dixon has served with numerous aircraft squadrons and in September 1963 he reported for duty with Fighter Squadron ONE HUNDRED NINETY- ONE, first as Ex- ecutive Officer and then as Commanding Officer, and completed two combat tours in Viet Nam as a fighter pilot. In October 1967, he assumed command of Attack Carrier Air Vlhng EIGHT. Other assignments included a tour of dutv 35 Training Officer on the staff of the Commander, Naval Air Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. Captain Dixon was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses, ten Air Medals. Navy Commendation Medal, and the Cross of Gallantry lViet Naml. Other medals awarded include the American Campaign Medal, World War ll Vtctorv Medal, Korean Service Medal, National Defense Medal with bronze star, United Nations Service Medal lKorean Conflictl, Viet Nam Service Medal with IWO bronze stars, and the Republic of Viet Nam Campaign Medal.
