Rear Admiral Dewitt Leroy Freeman entered the U.S. Navy as an aviation cadet in March 1943 and was commissioned an ensign and Naval Aviator in Novem- ber 1944. He subsequently advanced to the rank of rear admiral on December 1, 1971 and assumed com- mand of Carrier Division FOUR in May 1973, relieving Rear Admiral Donald D. Engen. Rear Admiral Freeman's initial squadron assignment was Composite Squadron TWENTY-SEVEN at Pasco, Washington,flying FM2 Wildcat fighters. During a tour with Fighter Squadron EIGHTY, he participated in a China cruise embarked on the USS BOXER lCV-21l. While assigned to Fighter Squadron ONE HUNDRED ELEVEN, he flew F8F Bearcats and completed a world cruise aboard the USS VALLEY FORGE iCV-45l in 1947-1948. After duty as a night.fighter and attack instructor in Hawaii from 1951 to 1953, the admiral attended Gen- eral Line School at Monterey, California, and majored in Aeronautical Engineering at Iowa State College,un- der the Five Term College iHollowevl Program. ln 1956, Rear Admiral Freeman served as the Aircraft Handling Officer on USS RANDOLPH iCVS-15l. ln 1957 he attended the Command and Staff course at the U.S. Naval War College. He subsequently served as Operations Officer on the staff of Carrier Air Group SIX on board the USS INTREPID lCVS-1 1l from 1958 to 1960. Following a one-year assignment as Air Operations Of- ficer on the staff of the Commander, U. S. Naval Air Force, Atlantic, Rear Admiral Freeman commanded Fighter Squadron FORTY- ONE, flying the F4 Phan- tom aircraft. During this tour, his squadron deployed to Key West, Florida, under the operational command of the U.S. Air Defense Command during the 1962 Cu- ban Missle Crisis. Rear Admiral Freeman commanded the F4 Replace- ment Squadron, Fighter Squadron ONE HUNDRED ONE, from February 1963 through May 1964. He then served as Air Operations and later Operations Officer of the USS SARATOGA lCVA-60l. From June 1965 through December 1966, he was head of the Air Combat Placement Branch of the Bureau of Naval Personnel. Following that assignment, Rear Ad- miral Freeman attended the University of Florida un- der the College Degree Program and was graduated as an industrial Engineer,earning membership in Alpha Pi Mu, the industrial engineering honor fraternity. Rear Admiral Freeman returned to the fleet to com- mand the USS TRUCKEE lAO-147l. This tour includ- ed a Mediterranean deployment as the flagship of the Commander Service Force, Sixth Fleet. After complet- .ing the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Bu- siness School in May 1969, he served a second tour of duty in the Bureau of Naval Personnel as Assistant Di- rector of Officer Distribution. ln August 1970, he was assigned as the Commanding Officer of the USS SARATOGA lCVA-60l. Upon assu- ming the rank of rear admiral, he subsequently served as Deputy Commander, Naval Striking and Support Forces Southern Europe in December 1971
