' er -r ' lhJ Lv- ' f .,. 1 , the crowded sea the sea, vast as it is, still resembles a crowded freeway at times. ships, be they slightly gravid appearing aircraft carriers, sleek destroyers, ponderous tankers or firefly-fishing vessels, twist and dodge in an intricate pattern. ships come and go, finding and losing each other, bringing food, fuel, stores, paperclips and the myriad of materials needed to operate a ship at sea. also in the dance are ships with a mission less friendly. russian craft join the dance, spin near as if anxious to find a partner. rejected, they again fall away to wait on the horizon for the next number. xl.- 87

relaxation is where you find it working is the long part. for the crews shifting tanks, for the men handling lines, the hours pass like molasses on a cold day, and the days never end but merge into night. sleep is something you remember vaguely. it happened last week, it seems. but when the last aircraft is launched, the last line secured, the sun creeps out and sleep creeps in. it comes and for a moment, the steel gray walls fall away. the scream of jets is shut out, and sleep comes. holiday routine means sleeping, and sun, and a fevv hours of quietude on the flight deck. 4 5-se'f -H
