shakedown in gitmo at pier 12, final preparations were made for getting under way for guantanamo bay, known in fleet lingo as gitmo. for the new crewmen, the first deployment was an exciting prospect. but for the veterans, gitmo meant long days- and sometimes nights--of hard work, drills and exercises. gitmo would be the acid test for both the ship and the crew. under the critical eye of gitmo's fleet training group, kennedy would perform under battle conditions and all knew that grading would be strict. on the morning of nov. 2, dependents crowded pier 12 as kennedy eased away from her berth and headed out to sea. it would be a long six weeks.
