capt julian s. lake 'Ill .3 commanding officer september 3. 1969 to- captain julian strong lake was born june 13, 1922 in south boston, virginia. the son of julian strong lake and miles cary stebbins lboth deceasedl, he attended augusta military academy and virginia polytechnic institute prior to beginning his naval career. completing flight training in april, 1944, he was commissioned an ensign and designated a naval aviator. in september, 1944, he reported to night fighter squadron ninety one lvfn-91l aboard uss bonhomme richard lcv-31l in the pacific. he reported in december, 1945, to night development squadron two lvfn detachmentl with the outbreak of the korean conflict in june, 1950, captain lake returned to the pacific in composit squadron four lvc-4l detachment aboard uss boxer lcv-21l. he made a second tour in the korean waters as officer in charge of composit squadron three lvc-3l detachment aboard uss essex lcv-91. following his tours in korea, captain lake attended the test pilot school, and served as an exchange pilot with the u.s. air force. he also attended the usaf interceptor warfare instructor school, and later became head of the research and development branch of that school. in may, 1956, captain lake became executive officer of fighter squadron one hundred one lvf-101l. he was later named fighter training officer on the staff of commander, naval air force atlantic fleet, in norfolk, virginia. he assumed command of fighter squadron seventy four lvf-74l, the first operational squadron of the f4b, in march, 1961. in may, 1968, he returned to commander naval air force atlantic fleet as the naval air training and operational procedure standardization officer. in the fall of 1962, captain lake assumed command of attack carrier air wing eight in the mediterranean. prior to becoming executive officer of uss Saratoga lcva-6Ol in february, 1964, he served on the staff of commander carrier division four. upon completion of a thirteen month tour with saratoga, captain lake joined the staff of the chief of naval operations. he attended george washington university from june, 1967, to february, 1968, and was awarded a bachelor of arts degree. captain lake then assumed command of uss hassayampa. captain lake is married to the former barbara brooks of birmingham, alabama. they live in virginia beach, virginia, and have four children: julia ann, barbara diane, clara virginia, and julian strong lake iv. 35
