capt julian s. lake 'Ill .3 commanding officer september 3. 1969 to- captain julian strong lake was born june 13, 1922 in south boston, virginia. the son of julian strong lake and miles cary stebbins lboth deceasedl, he attended augusta military academy and virginia polytechnic institute prior to beginning his naval career. completing flight training in april, 1944, he was commissioned an ensign and designated a naval aviator. in september, 1944, he reported to night fighter squadron ninety one lvfn-91l aboard uss bonhomme richard lcv-31l in the pacific. he reported in december, 1945, to night development squadron two lvfn detachmentl with the outbreak of the korean conflict in june, 1950, captain lake returned to the pacific in composit squadron four lvc-4l detachment aboard uss boxer lcv-21l. he made a second tour in the korean waters as officer in charge of composit squadron three lvc-3l detachment aboard uss essex lcv-91. following his tours in korea, captain lake attended the test pilot school, and served as an exchange pilot with the u.s. air force. he also attended the usaf interceptor warfare instructor school, and later became head of the research and development branch of that school. in may, 1956, captain lake became executive officer of fighter squadron one hundred one lvf-101l. he was later named fighter training officer on the staff of commander, naval air force atlantic fleet, in norfolk, virginia. he assumed command of fighter squadron seventy four lvf-74l, the first operational squadron of the f4b, in march, 1961. in may, 1968, he returned to commander naval air force atlantic fleet as the naval air training and operational procedure standardization officer. in the fall of 1962, captain lake assumed command of attack carrier air wing eight in the mediterranean. prior to becoming executive officer of uss Saratoga lcva-6Ol in february, 1964, he served on the staff of commander carrier division four. upon completion of a thirteen month tour with saratoga, captain lake joined the staff of the chief of naval operations. he attended george washington university from june, 1967, to february, 1968, and was awarded a bachelor of arts degree. captain lake then assumed command of uss hassayampa. captain lake is married to the former barbara brooks of birmingham, alabama. they live in virginia beach, virginia, and have four children: julia ann, barbara diane, clara virginia, and julian strong lake iv. 35

commanding officer september 7, 1968 to september 3, 1969 captain earl preston yates, first commanding officer of john f. kennedy lcva-67l, Was born december 23, 1923, in Winston salem, north carolina. he is the son of mrs. Walter v. oakie lelizabeth holton yatesl and the late e.p. yates of Winston salem. he graduated from the u.s. naval academy in june of 1943 and served in uss dyson ldd-572i during the pacific campaign of World War ll. he earned his Wings as a naval aviator in december 1945 and has since served as a carrier aviator in numerous squadrons fl in , Y Q both propeller and jet aircraft. he attended the air War college at maxwell field, ala., and holds a master of science degree l1951l from massachusetts institute of technology. h . e served three years in the bureau of aeronautics and one year each on the staffs of the joint chiefs of staff, the secretary of th ' e navy, the assistant secretary of the navy for research and development, and the commander of the U seventh fleet. captain yates has served as commanding officer of f' ighter squadron forty-one lvf-41l, heavy attack squadron nine lvah-9l, carrier air group eight fcag-8l and uss raleigh llph-11. he bacame officer in charge of the jfk precommissioning unit on december 12, 1967. noW a rear admiral h ' , e is currently serving as commander fleet air Whidbey, Whidbey island, Washington. ca pt earl yates l l l l i , l l W . ilk
