l I 4 september 7, 1968 you couldn't have asked for a nicer day. the events that were to take place on september 7, 1968, had been so well planned for so long the weather wouldn't have dared turn bad. the operation order said so. the naval commissioning ceremony, an ancient tradition dating back to the earliest recorded periods of naval history, marks the formal initiation of a ship as a warship. the pomp and pageantry associated with the ceremony evolved from pagan rituals contrived to ward off evil spirits and dangers of the sea. in kennedy's hangar bay all was silent awaiting arrival of the guests. crewmen milled about in starched whites waiting to escort guests to their seats and maybe catch a glimpse of the kennedy family. shortly after noon the first guests started to arrive on the quarterdeck. soon the hangar bay began to fill with a multitude of people. uniforms, suits and bright dresses mixed in a swirling panorama of color like an impressionistic pointillist painting. comm ,f S NEWPORT NE gift it L51-. -.AFI 1 S L0 uv E S 59 ar- 'Q 42 5-,o gm i0 I ll. :Abi . 1 If ' . .xxvxtl YJ, g l'. ... v f 'u .C cu- ,f Q: o ,ga y .
