1 : :Lum'-:4-4s+:d::z-'-1n-11u:ofu-n3--u-nun Q... 3151 -, ,... -, 1, sea trials the end of july brought builder's trials and cva-67's first trip to sea. on july 30, under the guidance ot civilian pilots and shipyard personnel kennedy crossed the hampton roads and chesapeake bay bridge tunnels and headed into the virginia Capes operating area for two days of high speed runs and other tests of performance. capt. yates and cdr. c.r. smith, jr. the ship's executive officer, and a few department heads, plus about 500 kennedy engineering and deck personnel rode the ship to make observations and to gain more on-the-job training. the trials in general were declared a success. kennedy had responded beautifully to the helmsman's hands. . . a clean sweep for the ship. the ship returned on aug. 1 for completion of construction. later that day the navy conducted its first onload of black oil at pierside in newport news .l . 1 L ,t...v1- Fqgfrgg ' 20

preparation for the big day everything came into focus. months of planning, reams of paper transformed into operation orders. the commissioning ceremony was at hand. it was to be the end.. . and the beginning. the end of months and months of planning, a fantastic joint effort by kennedy crewmen newport news shipyard and dry dock company and the fifth naval district and the beginning for uss john f. kennedy as an operating member of the naval forces. kennedy sat along side the 31st street pier once again decorated with flags and bunting. the hangar bay was filled with 10,000 chairs. the overhead was a kaleidoscope of colored pennants. crewmen worked through the night attending to last minute details. on the morning of sept. 7 the gigantic commissioning cake came aboard. final preparations were made to serve 10,000 . . . and the captain signed caroline's scroll .15 i Q l li l l .
