l fire fighting school the most dreaded word aboard any ship is fire! so one of the most important phases of kennedy's training and preparation for new crewmen was, and continues to be, fire fighting. hundreds of kennedy crewmen charged into a blackened, smoke filled concrete building at south annex playing water on man-made oil fires and testing their ability to eat smoke and battle flames. they came away with soot on their faces, their clothes saturated with sweat and smoke. and they were better for it. ,-..-..-. i I i i I i 5 J l 4 i l ,

as summer drew on thousands of invitations to the sept. 7 commissioning ceremoney were sent out all over the country to vips, guests and families. at bldg. p-4, more than 10,000 names and addresses were affixed to envelopes. and most of them would attend. meanwhile, shipbuilders were putting the finishing touches on the huge hangar bay which was to be the scene of one of the most publicized events in the history of the shipyard. 17
