deck the deck department is the real navy- the boatswain's mates. they keep the foc'sle which houses kennedy's two 30-ton anchors and the anchor chain, each link weighing 360 pounds. and they keep it shiny, because it receives many visitors and is the setting for divine services. the boatswain's mates are also responsible for rigging accommodation ladders at anchor,for keeping the deck houses up to snuff, for handling refueling rigs, taking care of the liberty boats and the captain's gig, and for passing the vvord. they're creative, too. their handy work is seen throughout the ship in the form of fancy knots and decorations.
