.. ...,..,J,.-.. we---:-r:-fr z-ra 1'r1'1: -1- u 1:-:z -11-1 det alpha on the bitter cold morning of march 1, 1968, a small group of officers and enlisted men huddled together on the newport news shipyard and dry dock company 31st street pier for a brief ceremony. this vvas the commissioning of detachment alfa headed by commander ernest cobern, the prospective chief engineer. detachment alfa consisted originally of ll officers and 53 enlisted men and vvas quartered in the shipyard's three-story apprentice building at 34th street and west avenue. detachment bravo had been established earlier to create, operate and manage a school of the ship for training crevvmen in shipboard techniques. the mission of detachment alfa, on the other hand, vvas to identify and correct material deficiencies before the ship was finished. detachment a was to inspect the ship and all its systems, report and follovv up on any discrepancies noted in construction, learn the operation of equipment and proper installation and maintenance procedures and be able to train the balance of the crevv once the ship vvas turned over to the navy. 14
