Q' 'Ji .A- ,5 . fs., .lwl pcu is born the history of kennedy's ship's company began officially on december 12, 1967, in the office of vice admiral charles t. booth, then commander of naval air forces atlantic fleet, at the norfolk naval air station. as directed by the chief of naval operations admiral booth that day officially established the john f. kennedy precommissloning unit lpcul as a separate detached command. captain earl yates, prospective commanding officer, and a contingent of about 25 officers and men soon to be assigned to kennedy attended the ceremony. two days later capt. yates and his staff relocated in building P-4, an old, tvvo-story red brick structure on the naval operating base in norfolk . . . the home of pcu for the next GVQ months. on dec. 27, the first enlisted man reported aboard for duty and the pcu vvas under vvay. f ,er l-Cui' liiil 1QI 1111 1!7Ti ui! 1h11 Qlll 1311 iii! Wgdv. 1.ri?77 ' J 1. l'?iE 1 -' V A' E , i rf K 1 , i .. ...,..,J,.-.. we---:-r:-fr z-ra 1'r1'1: -1- u 1:-:z -11-1 det alpha on the bitter cold morning of march 1, 1968, a small group of officers and enlisted men huddled together on the newport news shipyard and dry dock company 31st street pier for a brief ceremony. this vvas the commissioning of detachment alfa headed by commander ernest cobern, the prospective chief engineer. detachment alfa consisted originally of ll officers and 53 enlisted men and vvas quartered in the shipyard's three-story apprentice building at 34th street and west avenue. detachment bravo had been established earlier to create, operate and manage a school of the ship for training crevvmen in shipboard techniques. the mission of detachment alfa, on the other hand, vvas to identify and correct material deficiencies before the ship was finished. detachment a was to inspect the ship and all its systems, report and follovv up on any discrepancies noted in construction, learn the operation of equipment and proper installation and maintenance procedures and be able to train the balance of the crevv once the ship vvas turned over to the navy. 14 .-A-u4--A-- Y A Q. .-Q if A y it , 75411, 3i,11f.',, X 1 r l fire fighting school the most dreaded word aboard any ship is fire! so one of the most important phases of kennedy's training and preparation for new crewmen was, and continues to be, fire fighting. hundreds of kennedy crewmen charged into a blackened, smoke filled concrete building at south annex playing water on man-made oil fires and testing their ability to eat smoke and battle flames. they came away with soot on their faces, their clothes saturated with sweat and smoke. and they were better for it. ,-..-..-. i I i i I i 5 J l 4 i l , as summer drew on thousands of invitations to the sept. 7 commissioning ceremoney were sent out all over the country to vips, guests and families. at bldg. p-4, more than 10,000 names and addresses were affixed to envelopes. and most of them would attend. meanwhile, shipbuilders were putting the finishing touches on the huge hangar bay which was to be the scene of one of the most publicized events in the history of the shipyard. 17 was i i i'Zs-ik: - Tv' iz, 2. V V on june 22 as more than 2,000 kennedy officers and men the green parade around across from stood their first forma! personnel fifth naval district headquarters became a inspection. capt. yates called them sea of white the sharpest bunch i've ever seen . . . i i i i - w NA, 'HY ,A 1 : :Lum'-:4-4s+:d::z-'-1n-11u:ofu-n3--u-nun Q... 3151 -, ,... -, 1, sea trials the end of july brought builder's trials and cva-67's first trip to sea. on july 30, under the guidance ot civilian pilots and shipyard personnel kennedy crossed the hampton roads and chesapeake bay bridge tunnels and headed into the virginia Capes operating area for two days of high speed runs and other tests of performance. capt. yates and cdr. c.r. smith, jr. the ship's executive officer, and a few department heads, plus about 500 kennedy engineering and deck personnel rode the ship to make observations and to gain more on-the-job training. the trials in general were declared a success. kennedy had responded beautifully to the helmsman's hands. . . a clean sweep for the ship. the ship returned on aug. 1 for completion of construction. later that day the navy conducted its first onload of black oil at pierside in newport news .l . 1 L ,t...v1- Fqgfrgg ' 20 'f 44' 'NY J!4 0 f 3.1 S 2 j F iid!! preparation for the big day everything came into focus. months of planning, reams of paper transformed into operation orders. the commissioning ceremony was at hand. it was to be the end.. . and the beginning. the end of months and months of planning, a fantastic joint effort by kennedy crewmen newport news shipyard and dry dock company and the fifth naval district and the beginning for uss john f. kennedy as an operating member of the naval forces. kennedy sat along side the 31st street pier once again decorated with flags and bunting. the hangar bay was filled with 10,000 chairs. the overhead was a kaleidoscope of colored pennants. crewmen worked through the night attending to last minute details. on the morning of sept. 7 the gigantic commissioning cake came aboard. final preparations were made to serve 10,000 . . . and the captain signed caroline's scroll .15 i Q l li l l . A4 Nu, .iv 1 ,A-2' . the day after on september 8 kennedy was opened to the public for general visiting. during the morning visiting was confined to shipyard personnel and their families but in the afternoon more than 50,000 people streamed up the gangway to tour the hangar deck and flight deck and see static aircraft displays. there was entertainment for all. music was offered by the navy band, the naval air training command choir from pensacola, fla. the 10th naval district steel band from puerto rico and kennedy's own marine detachment in precision movement with rifles. for four hours visitors were lined from the gangway up the pier and 31st street into downtown newport news. and when it was all over, the crew relaxed -really relaxed- for the first time in months. but ahead lay less relaxation and longer hours than before. the job was far from finished. there was still work left to be done on the ship and more training for crewmen. only two months remained before the all important shakedown cruise, the first test of kennedy's mettle. Walter v. oakie lelizabeth holton yatesl and the late e.p. yates of Winston salem. he graduated from the u.s. naval academy in june of 1943 and served in uss dyson ldd-572i during the pacific campaign of World War ll. he earned his Wings as a naval aviator in december 1945 and has since served as a carrier aviator in numerous squadrons fl in , Y Q both propeller and jet aircraft. he attended the air War college at maxwell field, ala., and holds a master of science degree l1951l from massachusetts institute of technology. h . e served three years in the bureau of aeronautics and one year each on the staffs of the joint chiefs of staff, the secretary of th ' e navy, the assistant secretary of the navy for research and development, and the commander of the U seventh fleet. captain yates has served as commanding officer of f' ighter squadron forty-one lvf-41l, heavy attack squadron nine lvah-9l, carrier air group eight fcag-8l and uss raleigh llph-11. he bacame officer in charge of the capt julian s. lake 'Ill .3 commanding officer september 3. 1969 to- captain julian strong lake was born june 13, 1922 in south boston, virginia. the son of julian strong lake and miles cary stebbins lboth deceasedl, he attended augusta military academy and virginia polytechnic institute prior to beginning his naval career. completing flight training in april, 1944, he was commissioned an ensign and designated a naval aviator. in september, 1944, he reported to night fighter squadron ninety one lvfn-91l aboard uss bonhomme richard lcv-31l in the pacific. he reported in december, 1945, to night development squadron two lvfn detachmentl with the outbreak of the korean conflict in june, 1950, captain lake returned to the pacific in composit squadron four lvc-4l detachment aboard uss boxer lcv-21l. he made a second tour in the korean waters as officer in charge of composit squadron three lvc-3l detachment aboard uss essex lcv-91. following his tours in korea, captain lake attended the test pilot school, and served as an exchange pilot with the u.s. air force. he also attended the usaf interceptor warfare instructor school, and later became head of the research and development branch of that school. in may, 1956, captain lake became executive officer of fighter squadron one hundred one lvf-101l. he was later named fighter training officer on the staff of commander, naval air force atlantic fleet, in norfolk, virginia. he assumed command of fighter squadron seventy four lvf-74l, the first operational squadron of the f4b, in march, 1961. in may, 1968, he returned to commander naval air force atlantic fleet as the naval air training and operational procedure standardization officer. in the fall of 1962, captain lake assumed command of attack carrier air wing eight in the mediterranean. prior to becoming executive officer of uss Saratoga lcva-6Ol in february, 1964, he served on the staff of commander carrier division four. upon completion of a thirteen month tour with saratoga, captain lake joined the staff of the chief of naval operations. he attended george washington university from june, 1967, to february, 1968, and was awarded a bachelor of arts degree. captain lake then assumed command of uss hassayampa. captain lake is married to the former barbara brooks of birmingham, alabama. they live in virginia beach, virginia, and have four children: julia ann, barbara diane, clara virginia, and julian strong lake iv. 35 executive officer september 7, 1968 to- capt. charles r. smith jr X captain charles ross smith jr., first executive officer of uss john f. kennedy jcva-67l, was born july 14, 1926, In dalhart, texas, where his father now resides. he is a graduate of the u.s. naval academy, the u.s. naval post graduate school, the graduate school of massachusetts institute of technology, and the u.s. naval war college and staff school. captain smith is a naval aviator who has served mainly with Cafflef squadrons operating with the sixth and seventh fleets. he has commanded two squadrons, reconnaissance attack squadrons three and six. he became executive officer of jfk precommissioning unit on january 7, T958- he has been awarded the V F' 4 1' I ' ' :E - A '41 , ' -an ' J' liberty in as a result of the first visit to montego bay and the reception, kennedy's second trip over the thanksgiving weekend was remarkably pleasant. crewmen found an open welcome awaiting them from montego residents. the Iocal beach at doctor's cave was given over for two successive nights to private kennedy beach parties. many crewmen were invited into montego bay private homes. kennedy's gesture on the first visit was generously repaid. liberty in the jamaican resort was fascinating. some prices were high. some unbelievably low. but the jamaicans were always friendly and chattering. among visitors on the second visit was sir frank whiddle, inventor of the first successful jet engine.
