PontUlano Nancy Prehoda 39 Angela Rae Cindy Ray Bridget Reid Julie Reilman A beast that contains all the fate of tomorrow. Is often believed not to have exist in the past. But dreams will exist if you believe deeply enough. But strongly enough to last. His power came from his hooves with which he could trample all below. And beauty from within his hair, with which he could deceive his fellow. Dreams circled throughout his mane. And went to all those who call. And intelligence from his head, Which gave him wisdom over all. Mystic pooled his eyes, And cried I ' m one over every! But the most enchantment one could ever see, Was the magic from his horn. It gleamed high above him, Only seen by the neioborn. The beast is a dream come true. But never to he seen. The beast is a Unicorn, A Unicorn of dreams. — C. AND A SPECIAL THANKS TO TOM IMMING FOR HIS INVALUABLE ASSIS- TANCE IN THIS YEARBOOK. 186 To whom it may concern: This is a short statement at the end of this mess that a co-editorship does not work!! Don ' t get me wrong. I liked the people I worked with, even Wes, who I sometimes treated like CENSORED. The continuity of the book is LOST in the communication between editors. So are a lot of pictures, copy, photo assignments, and friendships. But that ' s all I ' ve got to say about that. As for all the people who have put up with my CENSORED when things were late, here are all by sincere thanks. And for all the people who had to suck up my CENSORED from this book like ASB, well, here ' s some more. Mr. Simmons, take a hint next time concerning the editorship, get some guts and make a decision. To my Alma Mater So Long Suckers, Jason Hendrix As you can see that AKELA came out. Even though it was hard work putting this yearbook, I enjoyed it. And so I, the editor (or as this year, co-editor) give thanks to all the people who helped produced this yearbook. First, a special thanks goes to Jason Hendrix, who shared the title (and the headaches) of editorship with me. And an extra special thanks to Mr. Simmons, a man who became advisor when I was a little sophomore taking the AKELA class for the first time, and who put up with me for three years. We both grew up in this yearbook, starting with a little knowledge abooit how to put a yearbook together, and culminating in this work of art. To Mr. Imming, I give thanks for his help and seemingly endless knowledge of yearbooks, and for sticking your neck out When we, somehow, missed a deadline. Also I would like to give my thanks to Ca rol McHale, Lori Olson, Johannes Pena, Mike Rogers and Coleen Uchida for the extra effort they put into this yearbook. And to all the AKELA Staff, thanks, and pat yourself on the back for a job well done. I think this year ' s AKELA Staff wrote the book on school spirit and true dedication. The proof is in your hands. Thank you for everything, Wes Uchida CO-EDITOR OF AKELA ' 82 187 • t Mark Kallem, class of 1982, died in a scuba-diving accident this past summer. Mark was a member of the track team and had a very promising senior season ahead of him. Mark began his athletic career at Burroughs as a very average distance runner. It wasn ' t long, however, before he switched to the triple jump and began to show talent. In the season finale of his junior year against arch-rival Burbank High, with the meet on the line and all the pressure in the world riding on him, Mark responded by producing a life-time best jump that almost saved the meet for us. This achievement gave Mark the respect of his teammates as an athlete. More importantly, it seemed to produce an inner confidence that he could measure up to the expectations he felt others had of him. It was obvious to those dose to Mark that his involvement with the track team was a key element in his short life; so much so, that he was buried with his varsity letter. Mark was well-liked and we shall miss him this year. We will not however, forget him. Believing it is what he would have wanted, his parents have donated his savings account of nearly $1400, to the completion of the track team ' s new triple jump fadlit) ' , a project Mark himself had spent many hours working on. A memorial plaque will be placed on the completed runway. In addition, we will be presenting each year the Mark Kallem Most Inspirational Trophy, a legimate title in light of Mark ' s accomplishments and dedication to the team. Finally, we will dedicate the 1982 track season to the memory of Mark Wayne Kallem, a friend and teammate who died too soon. — Greg Switzer, Coach 188 Mark Lorello, Linda Ross, and Charlie Cusumano say, Who Loves Ya Baby? L. O. INDIAN LIBERATION ORGANIZATION i Your local l.L.O. has been very active this past year. With great support from our President Jason Hendrix, Vice- President Greg Barbula, and Public Relations man Johannes Pena, we have managed to keep Injun Joe under control. With a few special appearances now and then and a little hall roaming, he has had a good view of most of the school. He studied some low level drama and music, came out of the dark on health, copied layouts for this book, and has finally retired to his two room apartment. He is very glad to have such an organization backing him but we need your help. Don ' t let him get locked up in Reservation ASB. He needs his freedom! Save him from corruption! Liberty is life. This is a plea to someone to continue our work. You owe it to your school. Save him! If you can find him.
