Opening the season against three of the tough- est teams in Southern California, Loara, Manual Arts, and number one CIF ranked Blair, the Indians found it tough going. 'I969 was a building year for the IBHS gridironers, but speed and hard work made up for lack of size and experience. In a losing season a team works that much harder and a great deal of team effort was put forth here. Hard work was also sparkled by the many fine individual efforts seen in our games. The Indians lost, yet they won. For any man who goes out with the stamina and determination to play football and plays to win can never lose. The desire and wanting to win makes a team work hard. Your Can't take any thing away from a man or team that puts out and works. Hard work makes pride and the john Burroughs Indians have to be the proudest team there is. 2 M 3 .15-4 I j - L. 4. The support of students and Pep Squad, and the over whelming cheering of everyone at the game proved that the pride that was won was greater than any physical defeat. Baseball This years Varsity baseball team is making a bid for a Foothill League title and a CIF play off berth. Coach IERRY LIBMAN who took over the squad just a season ago has built up one of the strongest title contenders in the league. LIBMAN not only confronts his opponents with nine varsity returning lettermen, including pitchers FRANK PORCO and TERRY IRWIN, but his fast new lGo-Gob style of ball has cut down on wasted time and made Baseball a more interesting game, The team is a well-rounded balanced group that comes through with the right combina- tions in a winning style. The left side of the diamond sporting MIKE HOLZER l3bI, ZACK MINASION tssl, and GLEN BEAUBIAN and MARK EBLEY l2bJ, combine for one of the fast- est double-play combinations in the league. GEORGE SZELEZEK and DAVE NELSON hold- ing down left and right fields respectively have two of the deadliest arms of any outfielder. SZELEZEK'S clutch power at the bat is also prov- ingto be an important Indian weapon. Coach CRAIG BELL in his first year with the I.V. Squad is an excellent coach, with determi- nation which is reflected in the efforts of his many fine players. Over all the squad is reflecting the great winning spirit at john Burroughs, and is making winninga reality. I X j 'Z 'X V , ,MMS i' , .ts , f . Many thanks go to MR. JACK MITCH- ELL and his gang in the Press Photo class, whose efforts have made possible the photography around which the AKELA is based. We, in the AKELA STAFF, have to express our greatest gratitude and love to MR. CONLEY MC LAUGHLIN CMR. MACD for guiding us Ibut mostly putting up with usl in making Our Thing possible. ' The spirit at john Burroughs this year has been undying, and will live on as long as there are people who care and are proud. When today becomes tomorrow and our thoughts of now become only warm memories of good times we once knew, look around and remember a time when we were young. To all those who began a new decade and made the Class of '70 possible, remember how we did Our Thing , and how we did it together.
