Take a look around you and see for yourself. This is where it's happening! Action is found in just about every aspect of school life. Running to make that touch- down, marching to the rhythmic beat of the band, leaping over hurdles, and even twirling batons, students are involved in physical ac- tivity and are swinging into real action. But the action does not stop here. It probes even further into minds, into what is thinking ac- tion. To study for a test, to participate in a class discussion, to write a term paper, stu- dents are fotuid actively using their intelli- gence. Creativity plays a large part in the action. By singing a song, w rit in g a good article, creating a good painting, dancing to music, or even putting a fuel pump back where it be- longs, students dis play their talent in this skillful action. Action that is often taken for granted is teaching action. This action prepares stu- dents for the world that awaits everyone after graduation, whether it be college or a voca- tion. In the past year, the Student Body has overflowed with another type of action. In this catagory falls school spirit, team support, and the proper attitude. It takes all these kinds of action to make a complete school or student body. Remember that you attend the school where the action is. Burroughs went on to win 21-12. -+-'r My ,' Winning the Foothill League Champion- ship was a first in the nineteen-year history of the john Burroughs' Varsity football team. The biggest win of the season against Blair, who was undefeated in the past twelve league games, was edged in the last 45 seconds of play, making the score 7-6 for the Indians. In beating Pasadena 21-12 Burroughs clenched the title by being two wins ahead and only one game to go. The most anticipated game of the season for both Burbank High Schools proved a disappointment for the Indians. Burbank, playing their best game of the season, held on to the 20-0 halftime lead to beat Burroughs 20-19. The Indians boasted many fine players on their championship team. A few of the many great players were all-leaguers Dan McGin- ley, Dave Hormuth, Randy Shultz, Mike Erickson, CraigCanfield, Tony Delvlaio, Rudy Maurer, and Hank Reisner. An outstanding player taking top honors was fullback Dave Hormuth who gained over 800 yards during the season to break every school record for sea- sonal and career rushing. Dave was voted as Burbank's City Player-of-the-Year. Since the initiation of this honor three years ago a Burroughs player has always been the recip- ient. The '67 football season has been a reward- ing one for the coaches, players, and Indian fans. ,mm , 'r ak ,,L,, .Xx,.3,,,,N , W' . ,S ,-.4 b 1 , - . ' Ji. There were few bright spots in what was a trying year for the Burroughs Braves, one of these being quarterba ck, Dave Close. Coach Viskocil feels that Dave is one of the best quarterba cks the Braves have had in many years. The Braves played a wide-open pa s s i n g game using the T formation . The whole team was virtually inexperienced with only four returning lette rmen . The rest of the team was made up of juniors and Seniors who had Very little playing time behind them. Of the forty-five s o p h o ni o r e s who made the team, Coach Viskocil feels about a dozen of them will be of s ervi ce to the team. The traveling squad was the lightest in the League with only eight boys tipping the scales at over 140 pounds and one over a 150 pounds. On top of all this, the team was one of the slower teams in the League. Throughout the s ea s on the Braves per- formed to the best of their ability. The cross country team's record shows one win and a tie in the regular dual meet competition, and a win over Pasadena in the league finals. Coach Drager feels the '67 season was a building year for the team. Throughout the season there were many fine individual performances turned in by both juniors and Seniors. A new school record was set fo r the regular G r i ffe t h Park school course of 9:48 by Senior Greg Switzer. Greg put many hours into his running after school and weekends on his own time. As shown by his repeatedly good time s in many meets, hard work proved helpful. Also, an outstand- ing job was turned in by jtuiior Tom Thomp- son, who broke the oldschool record by more than a second. With nineteen boys coming out for cross country and all of them putting in many hard hours during school and on their own, Coach Drager feels next season should be a much improved season due to nine strong returning lettermen. Loo king ahead to the next season, Burroughs will expe ct an out- standing showing. To them it means class prepara- tion and planning time spent to choose the cover, theme, color, and layouts. It means selecting pictures, and writing headlines, outlines, and copy. lt means careful proofing of each page as it is completed. Credit goes to the action of faculty mem- bers, Mr. Robert Rose for the final proofing and Mr. jack Mitchell for the photography. Iwould like to give special recognition and my deep appreciation to Mr. Conley McLaugh- lin. His experience and student interest en- ables him to provide the supervision and ad- vice to make the Akela meet modern demands . Many thanks also to you the students, who are the Spirit of Action at johnBurroughs. As you flip' through the pages of the '68 Akela, I sincerely hope you will recall countless en- joyable and fulfillingexperiences at the school Where the action is.
