Henry served as MC at the annual Cinco de Mayo Fiesta and Bob served as French Club president for a year. Mary Duby. Annette Verner, and Margaret Hartung prove that it isn't iust a man's world, even in the field of science. Although these three girls spend a great deal of their time among test tubes and bunsen burners, they have excellent grades in their other classes and are very active in all school affairs. L a ln every Senior Class there are sev- eral students who have contributed a great deal to their school and to their fellow students. Their desire to learn more about the World around them through education, and their interest in school affairs cause them to stand out. The students whose pictures appear on the following pages have been chosen by the faculty of IB to be honored with the title of Outstanding Seniors of 1959. OUTSTANDING Mike Kaplan is the outstanding student of the year in college prep courses. He has the ability to do all sorts of work. from a complicated scientific problem to an analysis of history. Mike, who plans to make science his specialty, has captured countless scholastic hon- ors. too. Not all of Mike's time is de- voted to studying, however. He is active in many extracurricular activities such as Key Club and AFS, and is one oi the best liked and most respected boys at Burroughs. Sandra Odor is the scholastic leader in the vocational field. Although her main interests lie in the field of busi- ness. she has taken many of the most difficult college prep courses in order to give herself a fine general educa- tion. Sandra's warm and friendly per- sonality has endeared her to faculty and students alike, and we feel that she will have no trouble in becoming a really top notch secretary. SENIORS

ig SENIORS The Hunters of prehistoric times possessed Herculean strength. ln fact, they were so strong that they were able to kill the dangerous Diplo- das with only one blow from the tusk of a slimy Stynacosares. The Hunters were also very intelligent. Why battle with a sassy Saltoposuclius when a little salt on the monster's tail would serve the pur- pose just as well? they reasoned, Because of their extreme bravery and wisdom, they were acknowledged by all as the leaders. Qur Seniors at Iohn Burroughs have inherited most of the Hunters' praiseworthy virtues. Dur- ing school hours they bravely face their classes with only their books as weapons. Nightly they tackle difficult homework assignments and often they wrestle with enormous exams. Even with all these terrific academic problems, they still find time to take interest in student body affairs. 'O X 2-2, N f, fix Y 4 l X ,Vi lar 6'

Pete Hillman and Tom Tintorri were unanimous choices as outstanding athletes of 1959. Pete was a mem- ber of the All-League Basketball team two years running, while Tom was selected as an All-League foot- baller. Both boys earned starting berths on our fine baseball team, too. Carmen Gomez is active in al- most every phase of girls' sports. Having been GAA president, vice president, and treasurer and a mem- ber of Lettergirls for the last two years, she is well known for her sportsmanship as well as for her fine playing. Carmen's friendliness and humor have endeared her to many students at Burroughs. Bill Christopher, feature editor of the Smoke Signal. kept everybody up to date on the latest Burroughs events. Sheron Rehwald served as Editor of the Smoke Signal this year. Her new innovations and controver- sial editorials added greatly to the merit of the paper. Noel Iohnson. hard-working editor-in-chief of the Akela. also found time to take part in athletics and school activities. He served as Senior Class president during the fall semester and was a member of our championship B Football team. Micky McGarvey, Carol Pease and Mary Berry have held many impor- tant offices in student government during their years at Burroughs. The interest of the school as a whole has always been uppermost in their minds and they have devoted their time and energy to fulfilling the re- sponsibilities of their offices. Mary has served her school as Iunior Class secretary, ASB recorder, and Senior Class secretary. Carol was elected as ASB secretary for two terms. Mickey has held the offices of ASB recorder and ASB president. A1 Vacio and Steve McKenzie were two of the finest B athletes we've had at Burroughs in quite a few years. Both were members of the '58 Championship Football team. Be- sides being fine athletes, both boys took part in other school activities. Steve served as Boys' Council presi- dent lor a semester. while Al head- ed our Lettermen's Club this year.
