THE HISTORY OF JOHN ADAMS John Adams High School, located at 3817 East 116th Street, was opened in September, 1923. It was named after John Adams, the second president of the United States, by a committee from the Board of Education. Since its opening six principals have guided the school: Dr. P. H. Powers, Mr. E. E. Butterfield, Mr. E. E. Smeltz, Mr. F. S. McCormick, Mr. A. R. Dittrick, and now Dr. M. P. Effron. His assistants are Miss Dorothy Burke, Mr. William Moritz, and Mr. Allen Richardson. At present, there are one hundred and sixteen teachers at Adams, excluding the office staff and principals. The rooms total ninety-eight not including the auditorium, gyms, two libraries, offices, cafeterias, kitchens, and rest rooms. The name ’■Rebels came to John Adams in 1936. Before this time the school teams were known as Presidents.” Since other schools had this same name, it was decided to change it. A contest was held and Jack Lasnik, who was the sports editor of the Journal, suggested the name Rebels, which was accepted and has remained to this day. 2
