REBELRY 1962 JOHN ADAMS HIGH SCHOOL CLEVELAND, OHIO THE HISTORY OF JOHN ADAMS John Adams High School, located at 3817 East 116th Street, was opened in September, 1923. It was named after John Adams, the second president of the United States, by a committee from the Board of Education. Since its opening six principals have guided the school: Dr. P. H. Powers, Mr. E. E. Butterfield, Mr. E. E. Smeltz, Mr. F. S. McCormick, Mr. A. R. Dittrick, and now Dr. M. P. Effron. His assistants are Miss Dorothy Burke, Mr. William Moritz, and Mr. Allen Richardson. At present, there are one hundred and sixteen teachers at Adams, excluding the office staff and principals. The rooms total ninety-eight not including the auditorium, gyms, two libraries, offices, cafeterias, kitchens, and rest rooms. The name ’■Rebels came to John Adams in 1936. Before this time the school teams were known as Presidents.” Since other schools had this same name, it was decided to change it. A contest was held and Jack Lasnik, who was the sports editor of the Journal, suggested the name Rebels, which was accepted and has remained to this day. 2 The theme of the 1962 Rebelry-- We Build --emphasizes our school's goal of building up the individual mentally and physically. The construction of our new wing illustrates Adams' expansion to accommodate a growing enrollment. Bang! Clang! This mass of confusion echoes throughout the Album room and passes over the second floor. Between coffee breaks and parties more work is accomplished than expected. As the editors tear out their hair and the advisor turns grey, page plans are drawn, pictures are taken, and copy is written. Rulers fly, croppers are tom, typewriters arc dismantled as the final efforts for last minute additions are made for the album. Meeting deadlines is a laugh after two deadlines pass by without anyone raising their eyebrows. Amidst the clamour of excitement the 1962 Rebelry is produced and exposed to the public. STAFF Editors Bob Dzama Jo Pintagro Cynthia A. Bell, Advisor Index Editors: Harris Friedman and Kathy Beck. DEDICATION For your devotion to teaching, exemplified by the outside help you have given to your students, as well as your service to the school as sponsor of the Future Scientists of America and formerly of the girls' bowling intramurals, we, the graduating classes of 1962, wish to dedicate our yearbook to you, Mrs. Julia Rand. A family portrait After graduating from John Adams High School, Miss Julia Resko went on to Flora Stone Mather College where she was a chemistry major. During her junior and senior years, she assisted the professors in teaching the beginning courses in her major field. Soon after obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry, Miss Resko became Mrs. Henry Rand. Today the Rands have 3 children; Michael, 14; George, 10; and Julie Ann, 9. Mrs. Rand’s decision to resume teaching 4 years ago brought her to John Adams. Relaxing with her husband Mrs. Rand has been honored by the government with a grant enabling her to work for her Master’s degree in Chemistry at the National Science Foundation Institute at Western Reserve University. She will attend for the third time this summer. During this program she has been in charge of providing recreational facilities for the participants. Other positions which have occupied her time were those of editor of the bulletin for the Cleveland Conference of Science Teachers and den mother for Michael's club scout pack for 3 years. 7 At work in the Lab FAC U LTY DR. MICHAEL P. EFFRON, PRINCIPAL TO THE GRADUATES: Graduation from high school should never mean that your education has been completed, even if you do not plan to go to college. In order to build a full, meaningful, and rewarding adult life, continued regular reading or studying of worthwhile books, magazines, and newspapers is essential. Keep mentally alert. Make use of the many educational and cultural facilities that are available in our city. May all of you be blessed with happiness, good health, and success in your future endeavors. Dr. Michael P. Effron, Principal 10 Our administration is composed of as sistant principals Miss Dorothy Burke, Allen Richardson, and William Moritz. Their decisions affect many Rebels both directly and indirectly. In a school as large as John Adams, an administration that functions efficiently is necessary. Such is the tradition at Adams. Mr. Moritz joined us last September from the coaching staff at John Mar -shall High School. During the same month, Mr. Richardson assumed his new capacity. Together with Miss Burke, our main office has molded all the fine traditions the school wishes to maintain. ADMINISTRATION GUIDANCE The primary function of the Guidance Department is to help each person to gain a better understanding of himself so that he may function more effectively in everyway. This includes helping students, through testing and individual consultation as well as group meetings, to understand their strengths, and weaknesses, enabling them to be able to work to best advantage in school and to plan realistically for the future. E. White J. Smeltz SENIOR CLASS ADVISOR As Senior Class Advisor, Miss Francis Nugent assists senior class officers and committees in the organization of class activities. Among the important events under her supervision are the Senior Proms, D-Day Dance and Commencement. With the guidance and advice of Miss Nugent, the senior class is able to enjoy a most commendable year. SENIOR CLASS COORDINATORS As class co-ordinators, Mr. McKenna and Mr. Caldwell have charge of the senior homerooms. They keep order, take care of announcements and direct all homeroom activities. L. Levine J. Scheuctow J. Ralston H. Becncy P. Drake C. Bell V. Follin E. Gould ENGLISH Honored this year by being named English Experimental Center for Cleveland high schools, the John Adams English department continues a long tradition of dedicated teaching of language, literature and composition. F. Martin In the spring of 1962 the English faculty of 25 taught over 2,900 students in 102 classes of English, journalism, speech, radio, and dramatics, and was engaged in planning new methods of teaching and in revising curricula to accomodate the varied English needs of Cleveland's students. J. Needham C. Stager S. Schulman R. Loewe 15 C. Wochole J. Alessandro T. Bell G. Graham P. Collier D. Hull MATHEMATICS The world of mathematics never lies dormant. Mr. Glenn Graham heads a department that is full of wonderment in numbers. The numbers deal with angles, square roots, graphs, and various polygons. This field prepares each student for whatever his endeavor may be. A R. Shaffer modern world de- mands knowledge of so varied a subject. Each member of this department is eager to help and encourage the student to develop his potentiality. B. Dureiko H. Seasholes E. Urch M. While D. Petrunia M. Picri LANGUAGES Upon entering Adams a new student has his choice of studying one of four foreign languages. The student may continue his study of French or begin a study of Spanish, German, or Latin. The main aim of the language experiment is to give the student an insight into culture and customs of foreign lands. The opening of Adams' new wing was an important event to the language department . Along with new language classrooms, the department is able to use the newest of language teaching techniques. The more advanced interested students have the opportunity to join the language clubs. A. Carroll V. Markham L. Sugarman SCIENCE i M. Brinson The two new biology labs have created a new interest in the science department, headed by Mr. Ronald Runkle. Biology, Chemistry, Health, Horticulture, Physical Science, and Physics are all included in this department. New Biology, Chemistry, J. Kocab and Physics books have been purchased, and the students are getting a greater perspective of their courses. M. Clark R. Midlik R. Runkle T. Ptacck J. Chambers B. Powers W. Schaal A. Williams MUSIC D. Draiios ART The art department of John Adams High School is dedicated to the aesthetic doctrines of contemporary society in relationship to the doctrines of beauty which have existed in past eras. This program is a conscious effort to enable young people to relate their socialogical and ideological experiences with their artistic expressions. C. White Inducing students to better appreciate music and improve their talents are the chief aims of the music department. In addition to instruction and guidance in the use of musical instruments, students are helped in training their voices through the musical organizations associated with the department. This cultural development is an essential part of many students' lives and will always remain such. H. Wenzel J. Elliot E. Hamill HOME ECONOMICS Our Home Economics department headed by Mrs. Morris is divided into three sections. The first section is the Foods department. Girls can take Foods I, II, and III and instead of taking IV, can help serve in the Tea Room or help as leaders in the classes. Clothing is the second section and can be taken for four semesters. Instead of taking Clothing IV, you can be a clothing leader and assist the teachers. Section three is combined of Personal Regiment, Home Making I and II and Home Nursing. M. Harris L. Hruska O. Keeping attendance records straight keeps the five women working in 102 quite busy. Miss Newmark is the secretary in the main office. H. Skodinsky M. Robinson M. Bysura THIS IS ADAMS WE BUILD . . . PHYSICALLY The purposes of education are determined primarily by the nature of our society and the needs of the individual learner in that society. All educable children--the talented, the average, and the less gifted--have a right to an education which will help guide and develop their various abilities and interests and which will help them develop mentally, morally, physically, and socially. One of the aims and purposes of secondary education in the Cleveland Public Schools include the providing of opportunities to enable each senior high school pupil to develop a healthy mind and body. WE BUILD . • • 30 MENTALLY ... to every man his chance ... to every man, regardless of his birth, his shining golden opportunity ... to every man the right to live, to work, to be himself, and to become whatever his manhood and his vision can combine to make him . . . this, seeker, is the promise of America.” Thomas Wolfe After many years of expectation, the final stroke of paint is brushed on the third floor ceiling. The 22 new rooms add zest to our school of many years. An addition to the cafeteria doubles as a meeting room and senior lunchroom. With language labs, art studios, and biology labs, Adams acquires a modern look. Enhancing the beauty of the school and contributing to its facilities the new wing will be used and appreciated for many years to come. In preparation for this climax of their high school years, the seniors devote themselves to the studies of proper walking and sitting, good posture, and pleasant speech deliverance. This one evening will be a commencement of many lives. The long hours and sincere efforts will make it a dramatic finale. JANUARY 1962 COMMENCEMENT Our three years of study, experimentation, and recreation seem to culminate in one exciting evening when friends and relatives share with us our pride and pleasure on Commencement night. Often the most memorable occasions in a human being's existence are not purely pleasurable, but a mixture of bittersweet emotions blending into one sensation. Graduation day is typical of such an occasion, for with the joy of achievement there also exists our sorrow in the loss of friends and associates who shared with us the multitude of experiences which have created a bond which is difficult to break and even harder to forget. 80 THAT LAST During that last moment before Commencement in the hustle of putting on our cherished caps and gowns, what feelings of apprehension occupied our minds. Awaiting us was that long march down the aisle of Public Hall and our session on stage in front of friends and relatives . MOMENT These momentary fears were superseded by memories of three wonderful years of high school. It was difficult to believe that this night meant the end of one phase of our lives and the beginning of another. SPANISH CLUB CLUBS GERMAN CLUB others. The usual agenda of the meetings consists of discussions and lectures. Special features include speakers discussing student life in their respective countries, as well as opportunities for foreign study. STUDENT CONGRESS The John Adams Student Congress was formed for the purpose of bolstering school morale, providing opportunities for student participation in the management of school affairs, offering services to the faculty and students, and promoting the general welfare of the school. January Senate June Senate The Student Congress consists of two houses, the Senate and the House of Representatives . The Senate is a body of some 30-40 elected and appointed members. All chairmen of standing committees must be Senators. The House of Representatives consists of elected representatives from each homeroom. Still another branch of student government is the Central Committee. This committee heads the Honor Study Hall system. The members, known as checkers, make sure the honor study halls run efficiently. They also check the HSH officers to see that they, too, are fulfilling their responsibilities. January Central Committee June Central Committee RADIO Radio Bulletin Staff Each day John Adams students receive announcements for clubs and other important functions through the efforts of the Radio Bulletin Staff and Radio Engineers. The engineers also broadcast programs during the day for classes in all departments . Along with these duties they also take care of the Radio equipment, and handle all school special announcements . They play a very important part in school communication. Radio Engineers JOURNAL STAFF QUILL AND SCROLL The John Adams Journal is published bi-monthly, is planned, written and managed by a staff of about 50 pupils . Students are required to take Journalism I before they are eligible to work on the Journal Staff. Those who show writing ability are selected for the editorial staff. The John Adams Chapter of Quill and Scroll, International Honorary Society for High School Journalists, was founded in 1929. Qualifications for membership include three semesters of outstanding work and leadership on the Journal Staff. KEY CLUB Kiwanis Key Club is a service organization for outstanding male students. It strives to develop initiative and leadership in preparation for useful citizenship. The Key Club is unique because it is sponsored by a local Kiwanis Club as well as school officials. The three-fold purpose of the organization is to provide service for the community, school, and individual. LRO The Lunchroom Organization, better known as the L.R .0. keeps the lunchroom pleasant, orderly and clean. They sell milk, keep the floors clean and uphold general order. SMADA The Smada Club, the boys’ service organization of John Adams, maintains order in the halls. The Smada was instituted in 1937 for the purpose of keeping our corridors tidy, orderly, and quiet. Smada stands for service, manliness, ability, decorum, and action. SCIENCE CLUB To satisfy the curiosity and interest of students majoring in the sciences is the purpose of the Science Club. Their activities include tours and speakers. The members have the opportunity to work in the school laboratories on school projects and assignments. WORLD AFFAIRS CLUB Twice a month the World Affairs Club meets to discuss current events, taking an active interest in the making of history. American foreign policy is debated, as well as headline topics in the news. Members may also attend lectures and conferences sponsored by the Cleveland Council on World Affairs. FTA Members of the Future Teachers of America are offered a preview to the teaching career through taking over classes for absent teachers. The opportunity to acquire an understanding to the history and development of our public school system, their purposes and objectives, and an appreciation of the contributions they have made in the democratic society is offered to each member. MATH CLUB Students talented in the science of mathematics and recommended by their teachers are eligible for the Math Club. The club pursues new and interesting concepts in advanced math in addition to the study of the colorful history of the subject. VISUAL AIDS The visual aids boys do an outstanding job operating the noon movies and seeing that classes are shown the latest educational films. big brothers AND SISTERS Each semester, with the influx of new lOB's, it becomes necessary to adjust these new students to the rigorous high school pace. Big Brothers and Sisters was organized to orient the new Rebels thoroughly and to deal with individual problems personally. Each Big Brother and Sister is assigned to several lOB’s whom they visit at intervals. The work of this group takes a burden off the guidance counselors and homeroom teachers who previously had to manage completely the con -fused” 10B. Seniors whose past record shows that they possess good leadership qualities are chosen to counsel these John Adams sophomores. BOYS’ GYM LEADERS Leadership, physical fitness, and high ideals are the goals of the Boys’ Gym Leaders. These students offer their services in the gym during their free periods. The Gym Leaders also sponsor the intramural programs at Adams. BOOSTER CLUB By selling tickets to athletic events, selling beanies, shakeroos, and pennants, and organizing bus caravans to out-of-town games, as well as distributing football programs, the Booster Club promotes and enlivens interest in school athletics and activities. The group has also established a courtesy code for athletic events at Adams and other schools. 116 GIRLS’ GYM CAPS As a service organization, the Girls’ Gym Captains serve the gym teachers, the students, and the school as a whole. They not only officiate at intramural programs, but also assist the instructors in class and with clerical work. Their main objective is to encourage girls to participate in healthful activities. HYGEIA CLUB The purpose of the Hygeia Future Nurse Club is to assemble girls who are seriously interested in nursing as a profession. The members assist the nurse in the dispensary, are instructed in first aid, and become acquainted with various fields of nursing by visits to hospitals, films, speakers . They also learn of the activities of other Future Nurse Clubs. ART CLUB In its sceond year, the Chiarascuro Art Club is doing much to promote interest in art at Adams. Many students not taking art attend the meetings. The Chiarascuros have bought prints for the school and repainted the mural in room 118 . Promoting Christian fellowship is a group of fifty girls, the Y-Teens. A humanitarian project, such as helping needy families is undertaken each semester, as well as fund raising projects. Meetings and other functions are held using the facilities of the YWCA. Y-TEENS CHESS CLUB The science of chess is thoroughly explored in the Chess Club, open to beginners and experts . The club also has a team which competes with other schools. The purpose of the Council on Human Relations is to promote, and practice, understanding, cooperation, and mutual respect among all the various religious, racial, social, and cultural groups to which the members belong. COUNCIL ON HUMAN RELATIONS ACTIVITIES Come on Maroon, come on Gold, come on Team, let’s go. CHEERLEADERS Our seven vivacious and vigorous Varsity Cheerleaders have led our students in whole-hearted support of our teams. We have 12J.V. Cheerleaders, divided into 2 squads, who cheer at alternate J.V. games. There are 9 Varsity Cheerleaders who cheer all varsity games. Their enthusiasm is felt throughout the school. 84 Let's go students, let’s yell! MAJORETTES Drum Major Bob Silver man. As part of the Band, Adams’ seven Majorettes led by the Head Majorette twirl their batons at football games and rallies. Between the quarters of the football game the seven girls perform a baton routine to the accompaniment of the Band. During the half-time ceremonies, the Majorettes participate by executing formations. The Head Majorette and Drum Major receive the Rebels' cheers for successfully throwing baton aerials. 'By The Dawn's Early Light.' Strike Up The Band! Karen Prudek, Jackie Mason, Laverne Damen, Cail Collins, Jane Donely, Charlene Matola, Francine Velotta. 85 REBELETTES The new face of the 196J Rebelettes was an exciting sight at all the football games. The precision drill marching of the past combined with a form of dancing created an entirely new style for the drill team. Miss Cynthia Bell, the new sponsor, and Mr. Henry Wenzel, band director, planned a new theme for each performance. Such ideas as The Detective Stories on T.V., South of the Border, and a Ghost Story for Halloween were carried out to perfection. 1-2, Cha-cha-cha CHORAL CLUB The Choral Club, under the direction of Mr. John B. Elliot, is made up of promising songsters who have actively participated in Beginning Chorus or Glee Club. Outstanding students in Choral Club are selected by Mr. Elliot, the sponsor, to sing in the All-City Chorus, a group of the best high school voices in the greater Cleveland area. Open House, the annual Thanksgiving Assembly, and the Winter and Spring Concerts are some of the programs which consume the Choral Club's time and talents. 87 The John Adams High School Marching Band, under the direction of Mr. Harry Wenzel is a vital section of the pre-game flag raising ceremonies and during half-time programs. An integral part of school assemblies, the band furnishes rhythm and melody for our all-school rallies. After football season, the Band is reorganized into Concert Band Instrumentation and devotes much time to the study and performance of Concert Band literature. The year's activities culminate in a Festival with all other Cleveland High School Concert Bands. Considerable effort is extended toward the preparation of instrumental solos and ensembles for the annual city-wide Cleveland Solo and Ensemble Contest. Winners are awarded certificates and medals for outstanding achievement. BAND AND ORCHESTRA Under the able direction of Henry W. Wenzel, the John Adams High School Orchestra performs at all programs and assemblies. It is featured at the Annual Spring Winter Concert and provides the music for commencement. Participation in various contests brings awards to the members of the orchestra, both individually and as a group. HONOR STUDY HALLS The most outstanding branch of the student government at John Adams is the Honor Study Hall system. Our Honor Study Hall system is a showcase to be seen and a pattern which is copied throughout the United States and Canada. The system is unique because the study halls are not supervised by teachers; students elected by the members of that study hall serve as officers. Presidents have the most responsibility in the study hall; they call the study halls to order and give warning slips to any person who has violated an HSH rule. The secretaries substitute for the president if he is absent. They are also in charge of attendance. DRAMA Drama and Theater Productions are courses offered to students interested in the theatre. Whether before the footlights or back-stage, Drama helps the pupil to develop personality and poise while acquiring a knowledge of the history and basic workings of the theatre. In Theater Productions one comes in contact with the duties of the stage crew. The pupils enter into the technical work of the theatre by being present backstage during many programs and assemblies. Those who are genuinely interested in any phase of the theatre may become members of the National Thespian Society, an organization devoted to the advancement of dramatic arts. Members are chosen according to their knowledge of the theatre and their active participation on stage or with the stage crew. Whether one is interested in the stage or just personality development, the Drama department is a great asset to students at Adams. 92 3Hi January Prom Committee January Promotion Committee January Announcement Committee January Commencement Committee COMMITTEE CHAIRMEN The committee chairmen are chosen at the beginning of the senior semesters by the officers of the class, with the approval of Miss Nugent, senior adviser. All seniors may sign up for Committee preferences. The Prom Committee picks the evening's menu, selects a band, orders tickets, and invites the speaker and guests. Cap and gown measurements are taken care of by the Commencement Committee, as well as the selling of tickets, designing of the program cover and selection of a speaker for the invocation. It is on this day that the upperclassmen are honored by the faculty and student body with a ’’closed’’ evening dance. This doubles as the 12B Prom. To add to the festivities of the occasion, each graduating senior designs and displays his own D-Day hat--a personal expression of his plans for the future or past experiences at Adams. I’LL BE SEEING YOU In all the old familiar places That my heart embraces All day through. In that small cafe, The park across the way, The childrens' carousel, The chestnut tree, the wishing well. I'LL BE SEEING YOU In every lovely summers' day, In everything that’s light and gay, I'll always think of you that way. I'll find you in the morning sun And when the night is new, I'll be looking at the moon But, I’LL BE SEEING YOU. JANUARY 1962 PROM ORGANIZATIONS NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society, as its name implies, demands honesty and integrity of its members. By stressing leadership and character, it creates an incentive for outstanding academic achievement. Members of this highly selective organization must maintain a high scholastic average and participate actively in extra-curricular activities. They are expected to uphold high moral standards in the classroom. 102 President— Ed Jirousck Vice President--Libby Yunger Even Honor Students Get Nervous and Excited. I pledge myself to uphold the lofty ideals of the National Honor Society, striving in every way to promote its standards in my school and daily life. May I never prove unworthy of the honor and trust invested in me, and thereby forfeit my membership. Those boys who are returning can learn from the Seniors' accomplishments and mistakes. The boys were in every game up to the last minute. It was a good group of boys and they represented John Adams well, stated Coach John McKenna . For the first time the team traveled east to tangle with the perenially tough Niles McKinley team. Each season attention is focused on one of our major sports--sneakers replace spikes, the track replaces the gym, homeplate replaces the goal line. Through these as well as intramural games, the school spirit is kept high. Spectator and player participation lend equally to the promotion of sportsmanship and interest in athletics. For their efforts and performance, we salute the John Adams athletes and coaches. 127 BASKETBALL The 1961-62 basketball season was very successful. The record that the team compiled was indicative of the type of individual we have on our team. 1 would say that attitude, desire, and ability were the reasons for the team's success this year. The team started the season with a tremendous winning attitude. It is difficult to maintain this attitude after a loss, but the boys faltered little. The desire to excell is also a factor needed for success. The team was always striving to improve. With this desire so high, their improvement in ability was tremendous . There was a lot of basketball ability on the squad. It was a pleasure to work with such a fine group of boys. BOYS' INTRAMURALS A variety of intramural sports are offered for boys interested in non-varsity athletics. Along with bowling and decathlon, the boys exert their energies in fleetball, soccer, baseball, speedball, and basketball. Champion teams of each gym class compete for further titles. The Intramural activities are sponsored by the Physical Education Department. The Girls' Intramural program allows sports -minded girls to further their knowledge of a particular activity through practice in after-school games and meetings. Conducted by the Girls' Gym Caps, the Intra-murals include basketball, volleyball, field hockey, badminton, modern dance, physical fitness, tumbling, bowling, and softball. Other proposed activities include folk dancing and horseback riding. Awards are given for participation according to a point system at a program held once a semester.
