Bob Reports 1 Rebel Sports Recalls 1-hghlt jhts f Past Three Years Cagemen Face Trojans for Senate Lead Th1s headlme boomed out at us the class of January 52, from the sports page of our first ed1t1on of the John Adams Journal Coach Colm Lanmng s boys lost that game to Central 47 31 then succumbed to the Latin Llons 72 42 Thelr chances for the East Senate basketball crown were flmshed they had to settle for a second place t1e Commencement time January 1950 joe Leonettl and Art Sepeta graduated leavmg behind them a team 1n possesslon of f1rst place Wlth the1r leavmg the fanullar names of Russ Taskey and George Thomas appeared more often on the sports pages The Rebel cagers wound up mn thxrd place m 1950 and were e11m1nated in the state tourney playoffs On to another year, the 950 51 season The hoop sters had a new theme song Hoop Dee Do they st1ll had George and now Russ was captam but the1r star was dfmmed 1n successive defeats by Latxn and Benedxctlne and the hardwooders wound up 1n slxth place Thls year who knows? Russ Taskey and George Thomas wtll leave the ranks of IA courtmen havmg done the1r best to keep our What of basketball s runn1ng mates the Rebel mat men all th1s l.1!1169 The 1948 49 ed1t1on of the team was undefeated untxl we got to Adams They then dropped two declslons m rapxd successxon F1n1sh1ng the season w1th s1x wms and two losses the Adams grapplers then coached by Ed Chupa began preppmg for the state meet They walked off with one state champxonship gamed by Ed Cassalichlo one second place and two fourth places Pretty good The next year w1th Chupa still at the helm the Rebels wound up fourth m the league sta.nd1ngs w1th a record of s1x and three Th1s tune our groaners took second place m the state meet w1th two champs Ed Cassllxchxo and Attxlio Russo and two thxrd places Another year and another coach The 1950 51 season saw Berme McGroarty take over the job of shapmg up a much changed mat team He came out of lt n1cely though as Adams tled for fxfth m the state meet w1th one flrst, ILLl1US Campetto, one thxrd and one fourth place Th1s season promxses to be a good one on the mats for the Maroon and Gold In the fxrst baseball game of the season III 1949 two of our boys starred Mike Fugo pltchmg a two hit game was helped along by Angelo Vecchio s two bagger Also on the pitching staff of that team whxch t1ed for second place was joe Schwartz The next season found Mxke at thxrd and joe Curatola, Ralph Coschxgnano and Joe Luplca added to the Rebel nine Coach Ed Brush s boys fmlshed fourth that year with a 500 average The 51 schedule the last one mn whlch our four representatwes appeared w1th Mike as captaln was a thrxllmg one Adams lost the last game of the season ln an 11 mnmg chxller to just mxss takmgthe East Senate title Pltcher Andy Horrlck hurled a ten and one thxrd lnmng no hxt game only tolose a heartbreaker Another sprmg sport, golfing under the d1rect1on of C F Glasser was represented for us by Art Bors For three years the Adams cmdermen have been grmdmg out records, not so much under Ed Chupa, but last season under Mel Brodt, twin terrors hit the ovals These 1.l'l the forms of Frank Leath and captain John Pazdmersl-n, ran w1ld both s1ng1y and 1n relays breaking records left and right These boys w1ll leave a lot behind them in january 52 Now we come to my favorite sport, and most of yours football at Adams one boy from our class Frank Leath was on Coach Ed Caldwell s eleven That was far from a glorlous season for the Rebels who lost every one of the1r games That year of 1950 was better for our team whlch won two games and for our class wh1ch placed fxve men on the varsxty John Pazdzlerskx Frank Leath Art Bors Ralph Coschlgnano and George Thomas Who can ever forget that glorlous 26 0 vlctory over Central the f1rst m 16 starts?
