These days with thee will cease to be, But through the passing years The thought of you, Maroon and Gold, Calls back fond memories. The thought of you, Maroon and Gold, Calls back fond memories. DEDICHTIUH E. E . SIVEELTZ Memories of the man who guided us during most of our days at john Adams will live forever in our hearts. The man Whom we so often heard say, You may now go to your third period class, has gone to his next class. Linked with all the dear recollections of Maroon and Gold will be those we associate with our ex-principal Mr. E. E. Smeltz to whom we the class of January 1951, affectionately dedicated this, our album. ' FUHHUURD ' You have finished an im- portant step in your education, and for this you are to be con- gratulated. You have had many experiences at John Adams both in the classrooms and in the various activities, and we hope you have learned many profitable things from them. Whether you go to college or not your e du c atio n should never cease, for you will con- tinue to have interesting ex- periences, and if we have been successful at john Adams, you will lear n something from each one. We wish you success in all of your ventures. F.S.McC ormick CUHTEHTS x - .N xx -.Q Q.:.:wg x X Aw. A-'X X X A N'-A .N - X 4 1 fhsshf- , Q x - XLNQPFL Q fx if ' W -., f mf N5 ,X - - XV... .,. . March 12, 1948. Coin-Champs! In an exciting basketball game with West Tech at the Arena, John Adams basketball team really proved itself as West Tech went down in defeat, 62-41. Of course, our class made up a large number of the 9000 fans who saw the East Senate sweep both games. October 18, 1948. Twenty-five years ago on this date, John Adams opened its doors for the first time. In celebration of its birthday, the movie, Maroon and Gold, which pictured all phases of school life, was produced. W January 24, 1949. Sporting new drapes and leatherette chairs, additional game room space, and other improve- ments, the Social Center attracted much attention and many 1lB's. Dancing to the Ice Cube Fantasy and the Birds' Eye Bounce, our class started its social whirl with our mixer, the Deep Freeze, under the chairmanship of Marion Thomas. February 27, 1950. Townhalls were now an integral part of school activity. Ir1 a closely contested election, Jim Hlavacek, Art Miccio, Joyce Szaniszlo and Ken Nekola emerged victorious as president, vice president, secretary and treasurer, respectively, to lead the class during the 12B semester. March 16, 1950. Then came the boys' basketball game. Always gentlemen, the 12B's avenged the girls' loss by edging the 12A's, 26-24. Herb Teklin and Joe Kapalin were the high scorers for the victors. April 14, 1950. With an eye toward the future and the Prom, our class began its school-wide, money making affairs with the First Robin's Hop. Chairmen Marion Thomas and Joe LoGalbo created decora- tions with a spring-like atmosphere. April 2 1, 1950. You Can't Take It With You brought down the house both Thursday and Friday nights. Members of the class had a hand in its direction, costuming, acting - in all phases of the produc- tion. Mary Lou Velardo, assistant director, Louise Horasz, head of make-up, Joan Torok, sound effects creator, and Joan Shaver, Jim Damico and Tony Rotolo, actors, all did a fine job. May 5, 1950. Inducting eight more members in the awesome ceremony, the National Honor Society lists now claimed Phyllis Edelman, Judy jackson, Nancy Reed, Mary Lou Soltes, Marion Thomas, Charles Galipo, Jim Hlavacek and Ed Krejny. King Dick Beninghof and Queen Jean Ann Macan set the mood at the 12B prom, the Blue Moon, at they danced to that same melody. Virginia Stella and Frank Pedone, chairmen of the dance, were responsible for the charming decorations that added up to wonderful evening. September 6, 19 50. The first day of the 12A semester brought with it many changes. Among them was the establishing of F. S. McCormick as principal of John Adams. All of us mourned the untimely death of Mr. E. E. Smeltz, who had been our friend and former principal. September 17 , 1950. Again class elections and again a close race. Re-elected veep Art Miccio and treasurer Ken Nekola were familiar with their duties. President-elect Frank Pedone and secretary Virginia Stella learned their tasks quickly and well. September 29, 1950. The first night football game of the '50 season at the Adams field was a doubly special occasion. This was because of the new lights enabling the team to play night games and the coronation ceremonies in which jean Ann Macan took her place as football queen attendant. October 18, 1950. With a great bang, the Atom's Burst, the 12A open dance made its appearance on the social scene under chairmen Joyce Szaniszlo and Stanley Lefkowitz. january 12, 1951. D-Day, when everyone got all dressed up and then wore those mortar boards with cute sayings and crazy things dangling from them, finally rolled around. The big mortar board Wel- coming us to the dance and the little diplomas scattered around the gym added the right touch to the festivities. Credit went to chairmen Iudy Jackson and Sam Ruvolo for a memorable Distinction Day Dance. january 20, 1951. The culmination of all social affairs was the Senior Prom at Hotel Cleveland. This was the night for which all seniors had been planning with care, excitement and anxiety. Billowing formals, impeccable tuxedos were just a small part of the big, last thrill of high school life. Seeing that every detail was taken care of, Marion Thomas and Jim Hlavacek, chairmen, did a great job. January 23 , 1951. Commencement--the last ceremony the January class of 1951 performed together-- came before anyone was really aware that the end was so close. Tearful faces, smiling faces, but all of them proud faces, were visible on all sides of the stage. After listening to the old maestro, Mr. Dwight Lott, sing Maroon and Gold one hundred sixty - eight of us joined in singing our alma mater, for the last time as students. The ceremony was over and three brief years at john Adams High School came to an end. PRUPHECU One world, a dream of 1951, is becoming a reality now, in 1962. The nations of the world forged ahead slowly, sometimes losing ground rather than progressing along the road to peace. In this, the summer of '62, many Americans wonder what has really been accomplished. Newspapers report the successes of the UN, radio tells about the compromises made between nations, television broadcasts the meetings between high officials, but the growing question in the public mind is How do we, the common people, come into the picture? ' The World News took up the question, and assigned to me, a feature writer, the job of finding the answer! This was it. This was my big chance ..... maybe. Like a detective, Itracked down ideas, but only one offered any possibilities. If I found that the everyday people that I know have working parts in this plan for peace, wouldntt others realize that everyone has his own role? As my guinea pigs I could use ..... my classmates at John Adams in the class of '51, I was completely sold on the idea and succeeded in convincing my editor that it was aworkable plan. So, with an expense account in one hand and a suitcase in the other, I set out on my first lead which took me to New York and Carnegie Hall ..... About four in the afternoon I sat in on a rehearsal in the big auditorium. The show was to be a UNESCO benefit performance in which prominent people in the world of music were participating. On stage, Marguerite Shurney, concert pianist, accompanied the renowned opera singer, Emily McCullough. Down in the orchestra pit, Norm Iancyk and Phil Panzuto tuned their instruments. Meanwhile, concert singer Stanley Lefkowitz stood in the wings talking with Evelyn Contrera and Robert Klein, who, with their popular songs, rounded out the program of American music. Without surprise, Iheard that joan Shaver was in her dressing room preparing for a dance number. After the rehearsal, we all reminisced - Do you remember ..... '? How about the time ..... ? And to think that eleven years have passed by! They became as excited about my assignment as I was and started me out on a score of new finds. jim Damico, Louise Horasz, and jim Trnka were down in Brazil touring with an American theatre company. They told me that over in Radio City, Ray Bohdal, Gerry Rottenbor, and Ronnie Seman, three prominent disc jockeys, are giving some time to the Voice of America broadcasts. Their benefit program, they added, would be broadcasted and televised, Mary Lou Soltes handling the radio angle and Don Skalak directing television technical work. Tired but enthusiastic, I left them and returned to my hotel. In the lobby I thumbed through aNews and an article reporting an international meeting of scientists on Long Island, caught my attention. Among the names of Clevelanders attending,I recognized those of research chemists Rosa Saks and Marilyn Sanicky and physicist Stanley Rothschild. Bob Katz and Frank Kutina were delegates also, Bob represent- ing ALCOA's chemistry division and Frank, Standard Oil. Convinced that New York still had a storehouse of information for me, I called on John Cifra in the Cifra Bank Building the next day. I knew that John was climbing to the top position in the financial field. I hoped that someone such as he who came in contact with many people could help me, and I wasn't disap- pointed. At luncheon IC, as his office staff dubbed him, informed me that ..... his own line of business is international loans .... Bob Tummino, owner of a modern drugstore, is devising a medical post office through which customers can send medicines to relatives and friends overseas .... To return to the financial field, Fred Baldassari is an accountant in nearby Albany. Bankers hours are demanding hours, however, and when lunch was over, john Cifra returned to his accounts and I to my hotel room, my typewriter, and the telephone. Instead of being the seeker this time, I was the sought after when the phone rang, and Peter Christ helloed from the other end of the wire. He and Jim Battiato, Peter explained, operate a small inter-city airport and had read about my assignment ..... Could they help? Living up to the motto of We get you anywhere at any time, the company of Battiato and Christ believed they could make my city-to-city hunt for news easier, and I agreed. Saturday found me circling in a plane above Louisville, Kentucky, with jim and Peter as co-pilots. The Louisville Dispatch had publicized my search for news and reported results - real results. I contacted Joan Coggins, Mattie McQuater, and Rose Tashjian, who are on the city hospital staff there, Nurses Tashjian and McQuater, and Doctor Coggins accompanied me on a tour of the up-to-date hospital. Rose had heard that in addition to building up a large practice Leonard Zeid, a Dayton, Ohio, dentist provides free dental service for DP's. Ioan Bartek is his nurse-assistant. She also informed me that Mary Price and her horticulturist husband manage a large farm near Dayton on which they hire some farmer-immigrants. I discovered that Torn Kelly was the artist on the staff of the Louisville Disptach. Because he signs his art work simply T.K., I never had known that the dynamic editorial cartoons I had seen so oftenwere Tom's' work. I learned from Tom that Stephen Kushner was editorial cartoonist for the Indianapolis International. Both of them play leading parts in forming public opinion. In the printing room of the Dispatch, I found Neal Beck shouting over the clanging of the presses. Neal revealed that he and Steve Parrino, P-A-R-R-I-N-O, own a private printing shop, and are printing pamphlets, How the UN Controls the A-bomb. At that, the huge rollers were set in motion and further speech was impossible. From Louisville, it's only a short distance to Fort Knox, and no soone r had we left, it see med, than we were landing at the base airfield. Peter, lim and I spent the rest of the day with Robert Higgins, air corps officer, and Marvin Silverstein, flight instructor in the U. S. Peace Army. We returned to New York Saturday night only to set out again Sunday morning. Destination - small towns in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. Objective-teachers. Like the Louisville Dispatch, news- papers in many states published my assignment and reported success. Our first stop was Wilmington, Delaware for a short visit with Alma Daniels, physical education instructor. From there it was a short hop to Lancaster, Pennsylvania where we talked with Joyce Szaniszlo and Barbara Iones, elementary school teachers. We learned that Lois Hruska teaches home economics in Sharon, Pennsylvania, and Phyllis Edelman is an elementary supervisor there. Both pilots and this reporter were tired when we flew back to New York, and I sleepily, but happily, jotted down in my notebook ..... met friends today who are teachers ..... can be proud ..... are building practical, peace minded generation. Monday, I kept a date with my typewriter and made additions to my notes concerning people I had heard about in my travels - Mary Lou Meyer, model in fashion-minded Paris ..... Marion Thomas, tennis champion ..... Frank Lino, Indiana baseball player . .... Don Dronzek, pro-golfer. In my accumulated mail, I found letters from Betty Jane Novak, Pearl Valek, Ethel Dora, Shirley Hershkowitz, and Donald King, post marked from distant places. Each is realizing an ambition to travel and each, in his own way, is an ambassador for peace. Tuesday I said goodbye to New York and to Peter and Jim. I boarded the train for Cleveland in time to meet my deadline, It had been three weeks since I started out on my assignment. En route to Cleveland,I put my article in shape and made a few notations ..... Joe LoGalbo, a building contractor, is cleaning up our city's slum areas ..... Social-worker Mary Lou Velardo is helping in his campaign ..... Police- women Lee Visocky and Sylvia Johnson are especially interested in correcting the causes of juvenile delinquency ..... Businesswomen like Ioan Adorney, floor manage r at Franklin Simon, Louise Stonebrook, interior decorator, Ioan De French, beauty salon owner ..... all are successful people who attributed their success and happiness to interest in their fellow men. The familiar names of corporation -lawyer, Pat Mastrodomenico and Frank Pedone, presidential candidate for the Republican party often appear in print. How do the common people fit into the picture of peace? These people, some of whom are graduates from John Adams in the class of january, 1951 answer that question. I am proud to know them. The nation can be proud that such people are its citizens. - W ...,, Y... ,,,,,,,,,. as-w,.,,. -r , - H- M27--....... ,.... La.-.-..,.. . .....7?........ .
