After an early season loss to Marian, the Eagles came back for wins against Mishawaka and LaPorte and upset 2nd ranked Elk- hart. A cold and rainy win at Michigan City put the team in position for a con- ference title but these hopes were can- celled after a loss to Washington the fol- lowing week. The season was highlighted by the play of Chubby Phillips, Mike Parseghian, Rick Mitchem, James Tolbert and Kevin Patterson in the backf ield, and a host of other fine players on the offen- sive line. The team boasted a staunch de- fense led by linebackers Parseghian and Cole. An added asset was the toe of Bill Stinchcomb, who kicked 7 fieldgoals to supplement his quarterbacking duties. Unable to salvage a share of the confer- ence title, the Eagles ended their season with a record of 6-3. Parseghian, Phillips and Stinchcomb earned state recognition. Behind the scenes last fall, the B-team and freshman squad steadily progressed, despite only mediocre records. The Beagles, led by coaches Howie Hardman and Mike Szucs, finished at 4-3-1 thanks to some strong defensive efforts. Dave Livers and Herbie Graves handled most of the quarterbacking and running chores, while Ric Wade headed up the defensive unit. The highlight of the year was a 42-28 romp over Elkhart Central. Coach Len Buczkowski ' s Frosh man- aged only one victory, but the freshmen have three years to show what they can do. Tim Spainhower was impressive at the fullback and linebiacker spots, and Jim Kestermeier was also a creditable performer. Above: Coach Wilbur ponders the team ' s performance, while M. The season started slowly for the Road- runners with two forfeits, due to lack of team depth, but through strenuous prac- tice and dilligent work, they came up with a fine season. The Netters were really a tough team as each gave their best to win at all times. An overall record of seven wins and three losses for the season placed them second in the N.I.C. and closed a successful season. Led by Captains, Lynn Ziker and Sue Manak, the female titans once again proved their strength compil- ing a 7-0 dual meet record. The season ended with a smashing 94% point victory at the state finals. The rewarding year was continually paced by the first year coach, Mrs. Lynn Bradley. Long hours of swimming, diving and more swimming paid off as Adams had three individual state champions, one relay champion and one medley runner-up. Outstanding at every meet and placing first at the state meet were Se- niors Polly Ehlers, and Sue Manak, and Juniors Kathy Komora, Abby Smith, Missy Lowe and Sue Busch. Congratula- tions and praise are due to these girls, a year of hard work to capture the second consecutive state championship. You have a conviction In their 6th year of existence, the John Adams Gymnasts led by Coach Dan Poe and Captain Steve Richmand finished off its season with a disappointing 3-7 record. So far, the gymnasts have only been able to compile one winning season as they met rugged competition around the state. The season started slowly with the team dropping their opener against Jim- town and then splitting the next two dual meets. The gymnasts then fell into a los- ing streak, falling short of victories in the next meets until firsts by Terry Smith, Marc Woodford and Larry Holtzman sparked them on to a decisive victory over DeKalb. In sectional competition, MVP Terry Smith placed fourth on rings and all- around. Marc Woodford fourth in vault- ing, and Larry Holtzman tenth on hori- zontal bar. In the state gymnastics com- petition, Terry Smith ranked tenth on rings and Marc Woodford seventh in vaulting. It ' s a bird! It ' s a plane! Mitchem, unbeaten in 25 bouts, was voted most valuable wrestler and next years captain of a squad that lost only three wrestlers to graduation. Last season had its ups and downs, but all in all it produced super athletes. Se- niors Connie Henry, Kevin Phillips, and Bruce Cassady; Juniors Ric Wade and Aaron Watson; Sophomore Steve Brownell; and Freshmen sensations Tom Pauszeck and Andre Scruggs contributed to a fine season. Assistant Coach IVIike Szucs sports a promising junior varsity squad that com- manded an impressive mark for the 72-73 campaign. Traveling to Evansville, a first for an Adams team, the Eagles had their problems. A shaky defense and in- consistent hitting led to early defeats. However, as the season wore on, the Eagles improved on their fundamentals and the work paid off. The team showed this comeback, winning their last 10 of 12 games, including victories over La- Porte, St. Joe, and Washington, all highly ranked teams. Led by pitchers Kevin Patterson and Steve Austin, the hitting of Morris Green and Ron Freese, and the brilliant defense of Al Taylor, the team entered tournament play with heads held high. Adams can look forward to a bright baseball future as underclassmen Rick Mitchem, Marty Laymen, Jim Szabo, and Mike Bilinski gained valuable experience this season. Varsity-Row 1: M, Lesniewski, R. But there are always other peo- ple — like the Wright Brothers . . the computer people . . the jet plane designers . . the geniuses who showed us how to generate electricity from atomic fuel — who go ahead and invent something anyway. No, there ' s a lot left to invent. And the bigger our country gets, the more complex our society grows, the more new ideas we ' re going to need.
