The sciences tchemistry, physics, biologyl, useful at any time but almost a requisite now, are but a few. Others are the shop subjects: machine shop gives a fine background for any mechanical work as Well as forming the basis ot a substantial civilian trade, and wood shop, which has the building of model airplanes as its special wartime project. This not only acquaints the students with the technicalities of the machines, but enables them to identify plane types by the structure. Mechanical drawing is important in defense work as in all branches of the armed forces: airplane drafting, its special project. Other old standbys on every program increase in impor- tance during wartime. The English classes train tor clear, exact, correct speech Cmost necessary for otiicers and others who give orders? besides main- taining the cultural standard which is always important, especially for the future. C! e Wow cwe our awed Civics and history classes give us an insight into the background, history. and government of all nations as well as reacquainting us with our own. Foreign languages are an important factor in bringing about international understanding which will help in pre- venting another war by bringing better understanding between peoples. Social and family relations and sociology Know a branch of the new combined civicsl help the soldier-to-be by pre- senting to him possible post-war prob- lems and their solution. Serving in a unique manner are the home making courses. They insure the boys that their gals will be able to cook a decent meal, darn a mean sock, and budget their earnings, so that they may have efficient homes when they come back home. They assist in the routine administration of the school, make out tardy slips, prepare and dis- tribute the daily attendance lists, phone the absentees daily, check skipper slips, answer the telephones, give mes- sages, and perform innumerable duties pertaining to the regular functions ot OFFICE FORCE the school. Under the supervision of Miss Smith and Miss Dvorak, they knitted an afghan from yarn salvaged from old athletic socks and gave it to the Iunior Red Cross who will send it to some Army camp. In the spring the girls sponsor the annual grab bag sale of unclaimed articles, the proceeds from which they donate to the Red Cross and other worthy projects. Row A: D. Whyte, A. The girls take dictation, type. file, handle all school finances, and do innumerable odd jobs besides. Several also help the Student Council with the selling of war stamps and bonds. The traffic squad is a comparatively new organization at Iohnson. First under Mr. Blume, and now, as a branch of the Student Council, they have man- aged to better conditions throughout the school. For their own enjoyment and some practice, the members of this club put out a four page sheet called the Typo-Quadder which contained some gossip and other articles of interest to them. 'l dlp jf 1 1 by Although it was not organized until the first month of the second semester. the sophomore class promises to sur- pass all previous groups. Under the guidance of Mrs. Vold, also a new- comer in Iohnson, the Sophs set up a well-organized and highly efficient gov- ernment. Besides the regular officers, this class elected a board of three. which acts in an advisory capacity. The present members are Dick Oman, Ruth Romanski, and Delores Morrison. When election time comes, the officers whose term has ended automatically form the board for the following year. This benefits the' new officers: they have the experience of the others to draw upon for help and guidance. Another new feature in the class is its constitution. Besides all these innova- tions, the class has established a new committee on activities whose function it is to plan class meetings and other projects. Bob Indehar, Dick Beltz, Con- nie Callendar, and Don Torgerson make up this group. With so many good ideas and such a fine start, the class of '46 should set a new standard for Iohnson High Sophomores. H gi, 1, f 'lf' A .
