Photo by Riehle Studios GLOR Y PLEDGE OF YOUTH We, the youths of today, the men of tomor- row, ask: What can we do to help bring -victory to the United Nations and peace to the world? We must build a stronger America. We must build our bodies by eat- ing sensibly, working diligently, and exer- cising vigorously. We must work on farms, growing the food for starving Europe and to keep our people strong. We must work in cities, gathering and hauling scrap and rubber for our industries. We must go to school to learn all we can to make us fit to be the fighting men of tomorrow or those at home who keep them equipped for their job. Then, after the war, this education will help us to live at peace with all mankind. We join our strength in work-our hearts in prayer, as we dedicate ourselves to keeping America free! A small group from the choir caroled through the halls of Anclcer and Gillette hospitals, besides rhe traditional singing in our halls. Masquers Bob Hope has nothing on us. We have Nothing But The Truth too. Mrs. Gordon and the advanced expression class chose this delightful comedy for the J. S. play for 1943. The producers went slightly extrav- agant. There were two sets used instead of the usual one, giving the stage force an added burden, which, by working during free periods and after school, they accomplished most effectively. Besides this, the stage crew's special project for the year was making a lovely flag for the Lincoln assembly. The change of advisers at mid-term slowed things up for a time. Miss Smith chooses her own office force. She takes into consideration personality, general intelligence, and scholarship. Girls who work in Mr. Blume's Office are chosen in the shorthand classes. They must be able to type well, take dictation, and do bookkeeping, in addition to having the qualifications stated above. The girls in this office must be doubly honest because they handle all the money for the school. But all is not work. Bowling Club Strilcel Spare! and Gutterballl,' are familiar cries heard at the Payne Avenue Recreation on Tuesday night when the Bowling Club holds its meeting. One of the highlights of the club's activities was a mixed doubles tournament. Stanley Bill and Betty Sime won first place. All the members of the bowling team, Bucky Olson, Don Wahman, Stanley Bill, Lloyd Shannon, and Bill Pettit, belong to the club. Bucky Olson won the City High School Bowling Tournament March 13 at I-Iarkins alleys. His three game total was five hundred eighty-five. Johnson won second place in the City High School League. We won thirty-one games and lost eight this year. The highest averages for the season were Lloyd Shannon's one hundred seventy-eight and Bill Pettit's one hundred sixty-six. After school everyone went down to Gerber's to guzzle cokes and hash over summer vacation. School just isn't the same as last year. It's harder than ever to rat because of a tall new assistant Principal, Mr. Blume. Miss Bienhoff was on the warpath in fifth period study. Last night I went through the desk drawers and rounded up twelve keys for the Red Cross collection. Today Miss Callahan left for Mechanic Arts. Everyone who knew her will miss her and her helpful advice. Believe it or not, we had snow in September. Got my winter coat out of mothballs to wear to the game tonight. I sang Old Man River all day long after hearing the Deep River Boys sing it in our first assembly. The little Negro bass, who rolled his eyes as he sang, really made a hit. First M.R. today-kept my fingers crossed. I bet the teachers love to see us pull our hair and chew our pencils. Talk about putting over an idea-the man who spoke in assembly today certainly did it. Kids are so dumb it's pitiful when they drink or smoke, he says. Yeahhhhhhhhhh team!! copped its first city football title. I guess.that proves we're tops in our field! The team carried coach Smiley off the field. Tomorrow starts M.E.A. and so we can really celebrate tonight. I can't stand it! jack I-Iedlund set the kids stompin' at the Homecoming dance. Three cheers for the Payne Avenue Business Men! They gave a swell banquet for our football heroes. I still say our team played wonderfully even if we lost the Twin City game. Edison's players made our boys look like midgets. We left for the M.I-I.S.P.A. convention in St. Cloud. Besides attending interesting conferences, we went to a super banquet and dance. But did we have a time sleeping, with eight in a room! Perry Copeland got the kids hot at our last football assembly. The team received their city cham- pionship emblems. December 4 7 January 19-20 February 8 9 19 21-26 27 March 6 16 18 23 26 April 8-9 10 After the Maroon assembly, I got one of the drawings Mr. Hoifstrom fl-Ioff to youj made. He's OK. Big secret revealed on the stage-Yohnee is the typical Johnsonite. fl-Ie was Bob Linnerooth in disguise., I'm really proud of Johnson High! We sold 511,500 in war stamps and bonds today in memory of Pearl Harbor. There was even a story about it in the Dispatch. No one in school today because of the cold wave. We had a swell time in classes because teachers didn't give out assignments. Bob DeHaven conducted a quiz program for the Courier. The seniors showed the students who know the most about old Johnson. The junior commandos have been straggling into classes late with torn shirts and frost bitten ears. Instead of gym, the senior boys are taking physical fitness outdoors even in the 120 below weather. I'm on the lookout for a tall, dark, young man, who's going to change my life: I'm going to a formal dinner soon too. How do I know all this? The fortune-teller at the Victory Hop given by the P.T.A. told me. Surely I can believe her. The hot dogs were swell!! After school all this week, I stayed and he'ped with the rationing of canned goods. Too bad we didn't have to stand around and wait for work. Talk about 1000 in the shade-the pool at the University was all of that, but it was worth it to see Don Benson win the 50 and 100 yard free style event and our relay team take another iirst. The swimming team gave a splash party to celebrate their victory, the city championship. We wit- nessed a family squabble when Perry Copeland threw his sister into the water without her bathing cap on. The Bugs! Today we had 'a super wonderful assembly on the Dutch East Indies. In one of the movies we saw the Balinese dancing girl whose picture is in the upper right hand corner of the Movie-Tone News Reels. The clock in the study hall runs!!!! Swing it! Papa Smiley's chemistry class gave him a pair of pink baby booties for his baby daughter. For the first time in our school's history, two boys led the senior honor roll. Over one-fourth of thc class of '43 has over a B average. Tonight was the junior-Senior play, Nothing But the Truth. Wally Ekblad and Joe Tuccito gave excellent performances as a big business tycoon and a priest, respectively. Amid checking and rechecking, the Maroon went to press today. So ends my diary of the important events in the past year. BETTYJANE RODENBERG. Page seventy-seven uniorfSenior Class Play I .H .' That's the way all Iohnson students should feel towards our adver- tisers. Theylhelp to make the book possible: without their support we would be unable to publish an annual each year. Because of business conditions, selling ads this year has been a hard job. Conse- quently, we are doubly appreciative of the firms who have been so kind as to advertise in the Maroon. Now let's do our good turn. Let's all get together and boost for the business firms that have given us ads. Let's ask our parents to patronize them. Let's make our advertisers realize that their business has profit- ed from their Maroon ad. So, students! back up these Maroon Advertisers. Remember they gave you this Maroon: you give then? your patronage. 1 M W it W VV xg l l ' I 1 . 4 INDEX QF ADVERTISERS Abigail Beauty Shop .,.....
