Everyone would like to take the credit for discovering it, and everyone does. The idea was to make silhouettes of them. Oh, yes, they're quite authentic. We'll tell you how we got them. It seems that all teachers, that is, most of them, have a common weakness. They cannot resist the fra- grant aroma of Java. So how simple to send each one an invitation to the effect that if they would grace room 206 with their presence, they would be allowed to con- sume caffein and cookies to their hearts' content. The results were amazing. Practically every educator ar- rived, and promptly too! But little they knew what awaited them! Une by one they were lured behind a little screen. One by one they were instructed to watch the little birdie , and one by one their profiles were taken by our official photographers. The art staff traced the pictures and artistically decorated them with bon- nets, wigs, and other relics of the nineteenth century. Simple, wasn't it? This is the first time that the Maroon has contained individual pictures of each member of the faculty. This is an absolutely new experience as far as we're concern- ed. Of course it won't meet with everyone's approval, but we've done it nevertheless, and we hope you'll like it. Dorothy Michels, the brave soul, was the member of the staff appointed to compile information on our faculty, and she has done a splendid job of it. Some of the questions asked were: What is your Alma Mater? What are your hobbies, if any? Have you any pet aversions? What degrees have you obtained ?,' So you see quite complete insight on all the teachers was ob- tained. We are sorry to state that live of our teachers do not appear on the panels. Miss Shoules, biology teacher, and Mrs. Rees, the nurse, resigned in midyear, and we were not able to get their pictures. Miss Collins, Eng- lish teacher and Gleam adviser, Miss Hain, girls' gym- nastic instructor, and Miss Brennan, industrial geogra- phy teacher, also, are not on the panels. r-flax.. .I . The advisers, Bliss Nichols, Miss Goodell, and Hr. Harrell, have done more than their share toward making the Maroon a success. Margaret Lindecrantz, literary editor, spent weary hours correcting the mass of write-ups, poems, and what-nots' that poured from the pens of staff members. lf it were not for lilla Betcher, the feature editor, and her staff of humorists, youll probably burst into tears over this book. liugene Hedberg. Lowell lllake, and Ermentrude Engson comprised the hard- working kodak committee. Cilaclys Johnson, Margaret Sclunalz, Elizabeth Houston. and Deloris Jones collected and compiled the information that graces the space beside your hand- some caricature. while llarry Klosebrook and Richard Schilling worked diligently on club tiles and identifications. The art staff, with l.orence lijorklund as art editor, made the attractive bor- der designs and the other art work. llut one must not forget the business staff, for they made the book possible by working many hours after school hours securing ads. The editors of the literary staffs of school publications and the presidents of the Picket Club and of the Hi-Y Club are honorary members. The work of the Council is carried on mainly through its committees. One of the most important of these is the Schedule Committee, which regulates the time of meeting for all the clubs. There is also the Point System Committee, which prevents students from holding too many offices or from overburdening themselves with work. The Student Council also has charge of policing the halls during the two lunch shifts. There is another committee to help in the cafeteria by reminding students to pick up their glasses and put their paper in the baskets. During the first semester the Student Council sponsored the noon dances, which were however, discontinued when the double lunch shift was started. 1 One of the services rendered by the Student Council is that of sending cards, flowers, or candy to anyone who 1S ill or who has suffered a bereavement. Miss Ostergren and Miss Schuette deserve much credit for their work as ad- visers of the club. The reason for this eagerness is that membership is gained through election. One of the qualifications considered when the election is held is whether the student has done anything praiseworthy or worth while for his school. The aim of the Picket Club is to raise the standard, morals, and character of every student as well as to safeguard his interests, personal and collective. Alb 1 Q Qfa t tie eginmng of each semester, the club operates a Picket Look Store where students may buy or sell second-hand books. A small commission is charged for every book sold in the store. On the social calendar are events such as a football banquet, a Picket Re- union, and Picket dances. A series of dances was viven after school to furnish entertainment for the students. The Picket Club this year presented to the school a portrait of Miss Morton, the expression teacher, who has been at johnson High School for many years. This unusual and worthy gift was painted by Theodore Sohner Dahlquist, a for- mer Johnson student. Since leaving Johnson, Mr. Dahquist has won a recognized place for himself in art circles. fb 'lifyleetl-32-2,i:,1if f . 'V ag, V , M X W -'i,i..-f .f . - ' .-:A 2 H. The purpose of the club is to create, maintain, and extend throughout the school and community high standards of Christian character. The members of the johnson Club sold the 1 buttons and donated the profits from the sale to the school Athletic Fund. At their meetings, which are held in the evening, they have had several prom- inent men as speakers. These include Nr. Fosbroke and Dr. Skon, character analystsg and john Schmoker, student adviser at the University of Minnesota campus. Before the double assemblies, the boys acted as ushers and distributed pro- grams. The Hi-Y gave a pow-Wow which was quite successful. An all-city dance was given on April llth at the Y. M. C. A. by the Hi-Y Clubs in the city. The officers' training conference was held on April 10 and ll at Faribault, Minnesota, Besides these social events, various other conventions were held during the term. . :sa :ca fp? Under the guidance of their adviser, Miss Goodell, the members have done exceptionally good work. Recently a beautiful book for the secretary's records was presented to the School. This book is unique in the fact that it was made by the members of the club. lt has a cover of leather which is hand carved and stained. Brass hinges and a lock and key add to the attractiveness of the design. At the P. T. A. Carnival the Spectrum Club furnished amusement in the form of fortune-telling booths which contributed greatly not only toward picturesque ellects but also toward Swelling the profits of the affair. Tally cards and Christ- mas cards were made and sold during the holiday season, and a bit of Christmas cheer was brought to the children of the Gillette llospital by the toys made and sent to them by the Spectrum Club. Thumb Tacks. the art club of Central lligh School, entertained the members of the Spectrum Club. The invitation was not returned by the Spectrum Club because of the dissolution of Thumb Taclis. s -. The object of the club is to furnish marionette shows for entertainment at social occasions in the school. However, the work ofthe cluh has proved so successful that its services have been asked for events outside of school life. The girls have been commended for their clear speaking and their directness and sureness of touch. The Puppet Club has had an extensive program during its short existence. It has taken part in two I'. T. A. County Fairs. Many outside organizations have received enjoyable hours from them also. At the Arlington l.ihrary they played before two hundred small childreng they had an audience of six hundred when they-presented three performances of a Christmas play for the Ft. Paul Players. Their services were also requested by the Preventorium and the XYoodrow Wilson Junior lligh School. Kleinhcrs are taken in once a year and are required to he lower classmen. Glee Clubs 1112 Glee Clubs are among the oldest organizations at the school. They have been in existence since 1917. One could hardly picture Johnson High School without its music department. There would seem to bc something lacking, not only fom the assemblies to which this department renders music so graciously, but also from the trophy case. For several years the music department has captured many of the trophies ohfered at the State lligh School Contest. This is largely due to the fact that Miss Nelson possesses rare ability in her work and is capable of bringing out the best in her students. hnlike many of the organizations, the Glce Clubs have regular daily classes. and receive credit for satis- factory work, ln addition to these sessions, the clubs practice together every Thursday after school. They have been called upon many times to sing at entertain- ments in different parts of the city. This year the Christmas Pageant took the place ot the annual operetta given by the Girls' and lloys' Glee Clubs. and the choruses. The pageant was given in the school auditorium, December 11 and 12 and was a great success. The Pageant CHRISTMAS Pageant was selected by the Girls' and Boys' Glee Clubs of johnson High School for their annual musical production. It was pre- sented by the choruses together with the Glee Clubs under the direction of Miss Nelson. This is the first time that a pageant has ever been attempted by a music department of any high school in St. Paul. The presentation was made very picturesque because of the colorful native costumes of various countries. First, the processional with participants in full regalia was most effective. It is a war drama full of suspense and thrills, but entirely devoid of the gloomy or harrowing aspects of war. The battles involve the use of wits rather than weapons, and the combatants are members of the secret service of two great nations. The scene takes place at Gibraltar a few days after England entered the Great lYar. Faculty members as well as students cooperated in the production. Mr. Ahl- berg assisted Miss Morton. Staging and lighting was directed by Miss Moreland, with the assistance of a large stage force of students. Long, black shadows darted out among the tall and gaunt looking trees that stood firm and steady, but swayed back and forth, their leaves rust- ling as the wind whistled through their branches. The wind moaned as it hit the sides of a once red- coated barn. One old door of the barn creaked and groaned as it sagged heavily on one rusty hinge. Football Team HE johnson boys this year were PTC-SCHSOII favorites to win the much de- sired city conference championship, but they upset the dope and finished the season sharing the cellar position with NVashingtou. Before the conference schedule opened, johnson had everything needed for a good football team. Malcolm Smiley had eleven men who had been under his tutorship for a full season. These eleven men had versatility, stamina and scor- ing punch. lVhat else could a school wish for except a gift of God! The johnson team walked over a powerful lN7hite Rear outfit nineteen to nothing in a non-conference game. Our school was all afluttcr with a football championship in sight. Then came the sad news. Robert Culp and Rae Garrigan, two linesmen of all city caliber, were declared ineligible. Two men were needed to fill their shoes. Edward Mauseth, Hashy quarter-back, left school. This left another important position vacant, and a good field general is not so easily located. This would be enough to discourage any other team, but still the boys plugged on and still the loyal .lohnsonites followed their team. During the season, the team suffered still another set-back. lack VVhite, another previous all city selection, was disabled and could not play. Fred Bau- meister, former back-field ace, was not functioning. These obstacles, too severe for any team of mortals, proved too great for the Fighting Johnson men, and they hnished the conferenceschedule losing three and tieing one game. Our outstanding player this year was Ed Buckrey, who was awarded a guard position on the mythical all city team. dcddggji l l l l l l l ,lf i l. Page 80 W -it ,. , ,cad .fre it-1, . Budke, number eighteen, who was one of Johnson's Sterling backs, is making a gain of seven yards off right tackle. Football Team-Continued The team was not as successful as was hoped for this year. The boys, Without the services of Culp, Garrigan, and Mauseth, played Mechanic Arts, co- sharers of the city title, in the first conference tussle. Late in the third quarter on a long pass Schwarz to Knippenberg, Mechanics scored a touchdown, and won the game six and nothing. Wfhite and Buckrey did out-standing work for Johnson. In the second game, W'ashington managed to tie Johnson at six all. The boys had the ball over the goal on several occasions only to be called back. Buckrey again held up the moral of the team. Johnson, played the formidable Central team in the third conference tilt, los- ing a twenty-six to nothing decision. The game was an uninteresting affair constantly marred by fumbles. Jack VVhite could not play because of a broken arm and his loss was severely felt. The last game of the current season left Johnson and Humboldt, traditional rivals, fighting for third place. In the first play of the game, Humboldt scored a touchdown on a lateral pass to Courtney, Humboldt's captain. The game was hard-fought throughout, but that first touch-down proved to be a winning factor. Failing to make points after goal, johnson lost the season's thriller twenty to nineteen. The team did not win the championship, but showed a fighting and sports- man-like spirit the entire season. More power to you boys, and to your efficient and able coach, Malcolm I. Lundholm displayed a brilliant game at center with four baskets to his credit. The team looked much better than Central's. They handled the ball better, played a faster game, but did not make quite enough baskets. johnson played XYashington in the second game, emerging with a ragged Hfteen to nine Victory. The third game with llumboldt was another last minute ahtalr with johnson winning twenty to nineteen. Hockey Team HERE was some doubt about whether there would be a Johnson Hockey team this year as no coach could he found. llowever, through the per- sonal efforts of a few boys interested in the game, a team was organized. lYilliam Toenges acted as a combination coach and captain, and. with the group of fine individual players that turned out, soon had a team worthy of city competi- tion. The season started with a spectacular victory over the Mechanic Arts play- ers. The score was four to one. lint, meanwhile, trouble was in the offing. Lvnder protest from the other schools of the conference, some of the members of the hockey team were cle- clared ineligible, and Johnson was compelled to forfeit two games. This prac- tically put them out of the conference race and, as their most valuable players had been lost, the sextet did not nnish its schedule. XVilliam Toenges was the only member of the team to be placed on an all city team. Ile was awarded a defense position on the second team. .Xs usual very little support was given hockey this year. This probably was partially due to the mild weather which made poor ice, and slow games were the result. XVe hope that interest revives, as it is a fast, clean, and thrilling sport. Swimming Team l N lllf swimming team has done very well this year in all its meets consider- ing the handicap under which it has worked. The small size of the team has made it necessary for each member to swim in at least three or four events. a circumstance which has undoubtedly weakened them considerably. Prospects at the end of last year for a successful season this year were very good, as only one player was lost through graduation. However, several of last year's players failed to join the team again this fall, and a gap was tlms left which could not be filled quickly and easily. VVell, where's the cashier? exclaimed a student when ready to pay for his lunch. Here I am, called Mr. Anderson as he climbed up on his high-chair, behind the cash counter. Where were you? I was just going to walk off, without paying. I couldn't See where you were. I was right here behind my desk-but don't worry about sneaking off without paying me. I can always see you, even if you can't see me. Mr. Anderson replied. He may be short, but he surely knows his business. Maybe you too have wondered how this old klunk gets to school and back home again every day. By looking at it, you'cl think the owner carried it back and forth. But if you ever spied Milo speeding up Payne Avenue about 35 miles an hour fre- member, this is an antique Fordj, you would wonder what strange power he had over the old Henry. We wonder how Marie Johnson was able to take the part of the Villainess so Well. Evelyn Berlin and Doris Blomquist were dwarfs, and Stella Malmquist was the Woodman. Just what would happen to our graduat- ing seniors if this little lady did not see them off! How she humbles them! Can you find anything a senior hates to do more than to get up in English VIII and say meekly I don't know. It's surprising the amount of energy that radiates from this small person. But then all good things come in small packages. Daddy's shoulder is the best after all. So thinks Doris johnson as Louis Hansen, who took part in Potboilers , comforts her misery.
