The members are chosen by the faculty from the three upper classes. The qualifications for membership are the ability and initiative to do things. There are three officers, two from the faculty and one from the student section. The president is appointed by Mr. Guise, and the secretary and treas- urer are elected by the members. The ollhcers for 1922-23 are as follows: presi- dent, Miss Perryg treasurer, Mr. Harrellg secretary. Margaret Giese. There are committees for the different kinds of work. The committee on athletics and scrap books compiled all the scrap books for athletics and social events. The committee for the alumni records has been working to get the correct address and occupation of all the graduates of Cleveland and Johnson High School. The Society tried to secure a case in which to put all the relics that have been gathered. Thus far efforts have been in vain, but we hope that Miss l'erry,s wish will be granted. This case will be put in the corridor so every one can see what has happened at johnson many years ago. Miss Morton, a member of the Historical Society, wrote the inscription for the memorial tablet which has been placed in the new S. A. Farnsworth School. Nr. Farnsworth was the First principal of the Cleveland High School, It was through his efforts that we have a high school in this part of the city. 8 'MARCDON THE JOHNSON HIGH SCHOOL All Hail to Johnson Johnson the royal, True, great and loyal VVe live to honor thy dear name. Today we turn our thought to thee in reverence. Johnson ever strong, List to our song. Our voices raise we, Our hearts do praise thee Oh, niay thy children bring thee fame. Chorus 1 All hail to johnson Dear Alina Mater, Wave high Maroon and White, Ne'er let it fall, All hail to Johnson, Dear Alma Mater, Seat of true knowledge and the pride of all. 9 .ug , Q, J Faculty Women ENGLISH Esther Boyd Edna Moore Therese C. Todd E. Paulus' home, but the club grew very rapidly so that it became necessary for the club to hold its meetings in the assembly hall. Qur total membership is now three hundred. ln order to become a member of this club, it is necessary to be a shorthand student. -Xlumnae who have taken shorthand while at school are also admitted to the club. The object of the club is to promote efficiency in shorthand, and also to have former graduates and business people tell us of their experiences in the business world. The motto of our club is: lie something: start something. This year we have had only one meeting, but we intend to have two more before the school year is over. XYe were very fortunate in securing llrs. George Hi. Cool as our speaker at our tirst meeting. The program included a number of vocal solos and piano solosg also a short play called Hliiogenes Looks for a Secretaryf' The officers for this year are: .Xgnes lilope, Ilresidentg Clarence XYeyh, Yice Presidentg Martha Klelleby, Secretaryg Sidonia Heinz, Assistant Seeretaryg Arnold Klelin, Treasurerg Le Roy Gravel, First Assistant Treasurerg Helen Gahagan, Second Assistant Treasurer. 45 g First Row-.Xhlberg. All committees have been making improvements along their various lines. Each committee in turn gives interesting and educational programs both to enter- tain the club and to promote school spirit and fellowship. The Picket Club took the responsibility of caring for the freshmen this term. A great deal of real labor is connected with the working out and maturing of our plans. This idea has been worked out and developed under the direction of Lola Pease of the School VVelfare department. Goshl St. Paul l he muttered to himself when his foot first touched the earth and he stopped to gaze about him. He was stricken with wonder at the beauty of the place, at the sight of the high hills, little hills, rolling hillsg the fertility of the soil, the wildness of it all. Immediately the Frenchman threw up his shack and things started in the usual way: the site was proclaimed fine, excellent, and the bit of news, cast by the installment plan, circled about the world. Rumors concerning St. Paul caused odd sensations, especially among the people of the Scandinavian peninsula. The idea of moving to this newly discov- ered country so dominated their ways of thinking that they became dissatisfied with their own familiar hills and longed for newer fields. A great number were so imbued with the spirit of the age, that they finally did take their traveling bags in hand and set out by ship load across the big sea. But then, while they were making their trip, the lonely little shack on the Mississippi changed to a warehouse on the Father of Waters. When the adventurer arrived, nothing could be seen but bald-headed hills. No hearts were broken, however, for Scandinavians do not mind hills, having been raised on the white tops of them. The fact is that the wonderful recreation of rushing stones down hill had long been their top-notch sport. So thence to the hills rushed the new populace, the greater number being attracted to one hill in particular which was burdened with the name Arlington. Husky white heads tore down trees, and with great pain and effort cleared a pathway to the crest and named it, according to effort, Payne Avenue. The settlement expanded and the oaks fell faster. The deer retired to the brush and the bears to the tree tops. After a while things grew easier and more settled. With the cutting of the first wisdom teeth, the young ones clamored for education and more education-even more than their parents could give them. St. Paul grew and was ambitious to do great things. Brains set brawn on his head and spun him around a few times till he consented to aid the town in building a little gray school house on the hill. As Grover Cleveland failed to get a patent on his name, that name was grabbed and applied to the edihce. When eager children grew into young men and women and graduated from the grades, the idea of gaining no further education struck like harsh music in their ears so they began to carry sad news home to Dad who fixed it up for a while by letting a couple of parlors in the building for advanced education. The parlors being high up served the purpose of education and were given the title, high school-hence Cleveland High School. A house was built to accommodate a certain number of persons sitting, standing, or hanging. When the little gray building's hanging capacity was 64 ' ag Maaoon - exhausted, some forward gentleman or gentlemen-maybe ladies-started the cry that burst the iron bands around the Department's pocket book. Things loosened up a bit for a spell, and a great new red school building took its stand on Arlington's hill crest. The seventh month of the ominous eleventh year of the late century saw the pilgrimage that transferred two hundred ambitious students through wide and mysterious hallways, equipped with elevators and drafts, and lost them in spacious class rooms. With the pilgrimage are connected certain rumors of disastrous happenings. The sign that the transfer was actually accomplished seemed to be the presence of the dreaded skeleton which had been covered with coats by students and rushed from the old building into the dark closet of Miss Perry's new laboratory. Miss Perry, herself, followed later, but was completely lost for sometime before she finally came across the sign on her own class room. Opening the door, she wandered around for a few minutes, enjoying the scenery and inspecting table drawers in search of perhaps some new species of Cleopatra. Tiring of this, the tradition further relates that in curiosity she opened the closet door, gazed for a moment in its dark depths, fainted, and fell to the floor at sight of the dreaded figure still shrouded in coats, and thrown carelessly on the floor. In those by-gone days freshmen were initiated. The elevators had no fenders and were not locked as they are now. When a lanky freshy came to school without his hair combed or without a collar about his neck he was promptly sent down the elevator to Andrew or to Mr. Guise who fixed him up in great style. Customs, manners, and conditions in the school have changed since Miss Perry took the count at sight of the apparition so mysteriously shrouded in the closet. Then, two hundred and fifty students could easily count each other during an assembly. Now, over a thousand drape the ceiling or hang in strict attention from the brass fence that curbs the balcony. Freshmen flood the aisles, seniors sit three in a seat without regard to class. In halls one seldom has to tread on stone. A student doesn't have to go to the football field to get a few of the thrills that characterize the game, for plenty of practice can be obtained in a noon hour's tramp about the halls. We are so numerous that even our own teachers forget whether we were at school the day before yesterday or not. But all this is just the bright side of our school life. You can bet we like it. We seniors love the old school now and we always will, but for the sake and comfort of those who replace us, we would not complain a bit at seeing a new edifice top our hill. 65 ' .Q Our Clubs wtf, b,'1- i F45 5' as 'I' .fl ri-frffv sf '54 'S ff I 'ff' miata 5 Kg JW eg We Maxx wie gf' 3' rf ' ef .irffwr-' W ifi! sr g if ie' Jglagmmiwr- .ffl 13? - ,zsifwlv -I 1 5 I ' t' ' l I fl! . - Q L- if Kiwi-2 ff- iles . 521-an ' A 151:12-'za ' -FC 533-W . , I Rs ,, , MM Wg :2+rL:g 'V' V ft. The director, Miss Sonnel, guarantees that the orchestra can play the jazziest classics and the most famous dance songs to their worst perfection, making not less than one hundred mistakes per minute. A number of our west-enders sometimes forget that they are in school when they hear the strainful music from the Annex, and the end is a very painful one for the student. The French Club Have you noticed the recent popularity of the French Club? We attribute the popularity of the club to the possibility of free admittance to the frequent f?j matinee dances. The popularity of the study was harder to find, but it was finally traced to a rumor to the effect that the magazine La Parisienneu was to be used as a textbook.
