September 9, the beginning of the 70-71 school year, Scotters were greeted by an absence of teachers from classrooms. A strike by Toledo Teachers over salary and contract agreements, the first week of school posed a hectic problem as far as management was concerned. Several days when student attendance was near normal, confusion reigned because of incomplete sched- ule changes and an insufficient number of staff members to man individual classrooms. LOCAL 250 AR 00 Of TEACHERS APT LOCAL 250 AR CIO Mixed feeling on part of teachers were seen as settlement talks dragged on and then were discontinued. Envoking of the Ferguson Act ended the strike as such, while it was promised that the talks would be continued. Since then there has been a small monetary compensation for the teachers but nothing specific concerning the contract agreement. Time out for consultation But always a bright smile. A TRIBUTE TO AN EDUCATOR; COUNSELOR; FRIEND We hope all Scotters will unite with us in paying tribute to Mrs. Gracie M. Stewart, who has lona been a distinguished member of our administration. Mrs. Stewart attended Brighton High School in Alabama where she was in the National Honor So- ciety and Valedictorian of her class. Majoring in mathematics with minors in English and Physical Science, she graduated from Toledo University hav- ing earned a Bachelors Degree in Education, and later obtaining a Master ' s Degree in Guidance and Counseling. She taught mathematics for six years at Scott, served as Department Chairman one year, as counselor for the past 6 years, and for the past two years has been Assistant Principal in charge of Counseling. Because of her sincere interest in helping youth, Mrs. Stewart has been a valuable person to students seeking college counseling, course instruction or just plain old everyday advice. She is an Upward Bound Co-ordinator, on the Y.W.C.A. Board of Directors and a Co-chairman advisor to the Y-Teens, Math Club, and National Honor Society. Mrs. Stewart is also undoubtedly a very loyal and active Bulldog . Whether it be in taking charge of a bake sale, wearing spirit tags, or equal- ing the enthusiasm of any student at a football game. She is a person the students can relate to and feel comfortable with and we are proud she is one of us. Scottonian Staff Mrs. Gracie M. Stewart There is always time to assist with a bake sale. 10 9 K ' % Deep concentartion . Mr. Flute Rice shows that you can do two things at one time. 4 a little laughter . . . For the past three years a great deal of school spirit and pride has been generated at Jesup W. Scott High School. We are in the process of creating a new image of this school. In creating a new image, we are weaving pictures of Scott just as various patterns of stars weave pictures in the heavens. Patterns of stars represents unity, beauty, purity, and high stand- ards. The new picture of Jesup W. Scott High School that has begun to take shape represents unity, beauty, and high standards. Flute Rice, Principal and sincerity is a must to carry out a good job. 12 Principal, Mr. Flute Rice Mr. Rice and Mrs. DeLamater share ideas on the instructional progran The typical day of a principal begins early and ends late. During construction of the new office area, the school office was temporarily located along the 1st floor corridor. I Mr. Wayne Graham Assistant Principal — General Administration and Instruction After three years of a new administration at Scott, many of the goals are being met. A new curriculum, designed especially for Scott students is in full operation. With teacher-student-community cooperation, Sc ott has a new resource center, believed the best in the Toledo public schools and a new stadium. Many of our classes are vocationally oriented with on- the-job pay and training. Future plans call for electronic classes, automotive shop classes, more years of foreign language, and more classes in remedial reading. Hope- fully, Scott High School has helped in someway, to instill in you, those values which will prove beneficial as guide posts for your future. As an advisor to the Class of 71 , I wish each of you the very best in all your endeavors. Remember, life is made of many ups and downs, and often it seems you have only the downs or the hard times. But, it ' s only due to those hard times, that you can appreciate the good times. Mrs. Gloria W. With the dawn of the 1969-70 school year, Scotters were faced with the condemnation of their stadium. Under the able leadership of Mrs. Ruth Sharp, the students as well as concerned people within the community united to rebuild their sta- dium. The availability of federal funding made the rebuilding an immediate possibility. In January of 1970, demolition of the Siebert Stadium was begun. In November, less than one year later, workmen were on the job constructing the new Scott Stadium. The efforts of Mr. Rice and the stadium committee are to be commended for raising the necessary funds to make the new athletic facility a concrete reality. Missing from the picture, Chris Reid and Artie Ware. rfifk ABC ' s of Life A young man will try anything but will only succeed in what you let him. Be wise rather than sorry. Continue to move with caution. Deal with strangers as if they were just that. End now what you see is wrong. Fortune is yours if you want it. Gather what you can now, tomorrow may be too late. Hold on to happiness, let go of those who try to take it from you. Insincerity is the key to unhappiness. Justice is not always blind but sometimes nearsighted. Kindness can be shown by the smallest smiles. Let no man tell you the height of your potential. Many a fool lost all by trusting too many. No one knows you better than yourself. Opportunity, like beauty, is to the eye of the beholder. Patience, in too great quantities, may lead to great loss. Queenly manner need not be boasted about, it can be seen. Reserve a bit of inner strength, not for others but for yourself. Stop all things that will lead others to sorrow. Think of a few as friends, more as acquaintances and most as enemies. Understand more than others think you do. Vengeance strikes twice, one at the other person, then at you. Whatever you do, remember those who are doing for you. Ex-cel in all you can but brag to no one. You can do a lot more for the world than you think you can. Scott High should be grateful that we are blessed with the pres- ence of our Symphonic Choir; this year, 80 voices strong and under the superb direction of Mr. David Carter. From long hours of hard work, along with the mag- nificent accompaniment of Anthony Pattin, they have created for us an image of unity and greatness which stands as a monument to what Scotters are capable of accomplishing, individually or combined. This year they have given the traditional Handel ' s Messiah, brought home honors from the Solo and En- semble Contest, and represented Scott at the District and State Choral Contest. Also they have performed at the University of Cincinnati, The Peristyle, and pre- sented the May Festival. Let us cease to wonder in what mystical way the blended voices create their harmony, or at the gran- deur and decorum of each performance, and give them the credit their achievements deserve. Bulldogs Tie For First Although there was a large improvement over last year, Scott High ' s fighting Bulldogs still didn ' t reach their peak. The Bulldogs started out by defeating the last year ' s number two ranked team in the state, Elyria, and then pulled out an astonishing victory over last year ' s City Champions the Bowsher Rebels. After the first two superior victories Toledo Scott was ranked ninth in the State. But an upset loss to Canton Hoover knocked Scott out of the ranks. The Bulldogs came back with four straight vic- tories (two of them shutouts). But again Scott had a setback in Cleveland as the Bulldogs lost a muddy game to Lakewood St. Edwards. On Homecoming Day Scott lost its first and only City League game to Macomber. The loss left Scott, Macomber, and Central in a tie for first place, each with only one City League de- feat to its record. With the tie, eight of the re- maining city lecgue principals met to vote for the representative of the Red Division. It seems as though the principals didn ' t know too much about football as they chose Macomber (even though Scott led the city in all major statistics). L. C. Lyons was the leading scorer piling up a total of 30 points. He was followed by Gary Higgs and James Gordon with 24 points each. Billy Anderson was the leader on defense with a total of 69 tackles, followed by Ron Harris with 61. K.E.H. All City Standouts Fifteen Scott football players were chosen All-City and honorable mention. Those receiving first team berths were Johnny Campbell at center, on defense was Ron Harris at middle-guard, and at tackle Bill Anderson. The Bulldogs on second team offense are Hooker Gordon at end, Paul Randolph at tackle, with L. C. Lyons at halfback, and super sophomore quarterback Joey Hunt; defense had Joe Quinn an end; a two way ALL-CITY pick at tackle was Paul Randolph, and finally Gary Higgs at safety. The Bulldogs who received Honorable Men- tion are as listed: Tim Harrison, Karl Stephens, Elmore Watson, Roy Harris, and Greg Sturdivant. 148 It Defense is the name of (he game. Coach Lott methodically peps up the team. i Sectional Champions The young msn pictured below accomplished something this year that very few teams have accom- plished in past years here at Scott. A group of superb Juniors compiled a 1 3-7 season record and an 7-4 league record. This is the same record posted by last year ' s team which many people say was Scott ' s best team within the past ten years. However that team was dominated by seniors such as Mike Steele, Gifford Moore, Johnny Langston, and Bill Hodges, all of whom were All-City standouts. This year ' s squad however has already matched their record, as Juniors. Many people feel that next year they will be the best team ever to play at Scott and will probably dominate the city and maybe the state. Scott ' s only city league setbacks were against Macomber, Woodward, Start and Central. The loss to Woodward and Start shattered the Bulldogs hopes of playing in the City Championship. Scott however finished second in the Red Division behind Macomber. The 1970-71 team proved to be the team to beat as they took the Sectional Tournament for the first time in 1 1 years. The Bulldogs Columbus trip was wiped out however by Start in the District Tournament by a poorly officiated game. The Bulldogs were led by Bernard Pope, Roncld Moore, Jodie Biddle, Keith Williams, Gilbert Mc- Cormick, and the Bulldogs only senior LaMarr Norwood. Tyler Seldon, Rob Roberts, and Gary Higgs also saw plenty of action, while Larry Collins and Romero Harthorne rounded out the team. Leading re- bounder and leading scorer awards went to Bernard Pope, averaging 14 points and 13 rebounds a game. LaMarr Norwood led in foul shooting hitting on 78 per cent of his shots. Other awards received were Ronald Moore for the Most Valuable Player , Jodie B iddle for the Best Defensive Player . Gilbert McCormick earned the Most Improved Player award, and Keith Williams the Sports- manship award, while Larry Collins achieved Scholastic honors. Bernard Pope, Ronald Moore, Jodie Biddle, and LaMarr Norwood were also All-City performers. A fair warning to all opponents of next years Scott ' s Varsity Fighting Bulldogs, Beware.
