A youthful Miss Petersen in a 1940 photograph with Physical Education Department colleagues, N. Knight and C. Meissner. Very rarely is a school fortunate enough to have on its staff an exceptional individual whose strength of character permeates the educational and guidance programs to the ex- tent that long term direction, solid organization, and improve- ment to those program results, establishing an outstanding record of achievement. The presence and the influence of Florence Petersen has been felt at Scott High School over a span of three decades. After receiving the A.B. degree from Ypsilanti University and the M.A degree from the University of Michigan, Miss Petersen came to Scott in 1938 as a teacher of girls' physical education. ln 1942 Miss Petersen left for military duty with the Red Cross. She served for two years in Alaska and also directed recreation programs in army service clubs during the war. She returned to Scott in 1946, after teaching at Waite Miss Petersen in 1942. Dedication for a semester. Two years later she was named supervisor of physical education for the Board of Education. Miss Petersen returned to Scott in 1952 to become dean of girls. Until the counseling staff was expanded, she and Mr. Vernon Alberstett shared the task of counseling the entire student body for eight years. Miss Petersen's title became assistant principal in 1954, with a special assignment as co-ordinator of counseling. She was named assistant principal in charge of administration in 1963. Miss Petersen's devotion to the out-of-doors is well estab- lished. She has directed recreational programs at various summer camps. For a total of twelve summers she taught a counselor education course for the University of Michigan at lnterlochen, site of the National Music Camp. Miss Petersen also maintains a cabin as a vacation retreat in northern Michigan. ln her teaching and administrative posts, Miss Petersen Mr. Ortyl conveys his good wishes to Miss Petersen on her ap- pointment as associate principal of Whitney Vocational High School.
