Class of '88 Works Their Fair Share . . . Community Service is an important part of the educational program at Iesuit College Prep. This gives the Iesuit Senior many opportunities to serve the Iesuit and Dallas Communities. Although volunteer work - becoming a Man For Others - is a commitment for life. At Iesuit, the Seniors must serve one-hundred hours ir1 order to graduate. This year the Class of '88 has gone way over the predicted . . . 8: More! number of hours made by Mrs. Louise Lambeny, the Community Service Coordinator. Serving the sick, the needy, the handicapped, the uneducated, and those less fortunate than us provides unique opportunities for us. It is the primary step in the Iesuit tradition to serve others!!! fl' xl :.F 5? ,1',. 1 gg z- We.- ' ' ft ,-me-rg , nidwf- ff' . . vf it ,-. , 3 . -.M 2 fav' 5-gli , iaeS3ftmSf'f i'if:95? ,f:filf ya , . 'fw- fiisn- of v Seniors get it together in a Daze As Freshmen one constantly hears about the privileges Seniors receive. During the Sophomore and Iunior years these privileges are seen and envied. Those benefits spoken of include: any blazer color and material, the coveted Senior court yard, off-campus lunch, and Community Service Wednesdays. The most important privilege a Sen- ior is granted, Senior Community Days, involves maturity and a sense of brotherhood and commu- nity for fellow classmates. This three day adventure allowed a class full of spirit and energy to develop a Closer stronger bond to one another. The journey was not paved for everyone. No set path was ever given to the class. Rather, obstacles, such as theft mixed with a few failures, had to be cleared off the path and bad seeds were thrown to the side. There are several misconceptions about Community Days one may have before actually experiencing it. From the outside Community Days looks just like another re- treat. UNTRUE! Another false im- pression is that good friends be- come closer while the rest of the class, some whom one may not want to know, are left in the cold. Before experiencing Communi- ty Days, I believed these un- truths. The three days away from school routines and the hustle- bustle of everyday city life gives a person time to step back and to look at his present friendships, perceptions about himself and others, and how to make friend- ships better. These group discussions give classmates time to talk to those who normally would never be seen together. The stereotypes placed on everyone over the years vanished. No one was re- ally excluded. I felt I was finally able to open up to people whom I knew on the outside but knew nothing about their feelings and emotions on the inside. The community spirit did nc stop at the words. lt continu through all free time allotted the athletically inclined class. one was declined the opportuni to participate in his favorite at tivity. 'I'he Senior Class of 1988 to advantage of the three day eil penditure. We knew our faul' and tried to repair them. Friencn ships were examined, repairea and some given birth. The perso in everyone seemed to Chang' No longer were we doing go just for ourselves but for thoj who surrounded us. Without th experience many of us would st be the same people - some bo ing, others rude, and some wlr would not extend a helping hant It seemed that what took thr years to build was torn down ali rebuilt three times as strong 2 just three days. - Mike Zar A190 ' 'PS 'SEQ 5 3 '52, fa Yi: fn.- Wrestling 3-4' Volleyball 4' In- tramurals 2-4' Spanish Club 3-4' IS 4' Honor Roll 4 Honor Roll l-4' Spanish Club 3' Latin Club 1' SADD 4' NHS 2-4' Who s Who 3 4' Tennis Kcaptainl 1-4' Lettermans Club 2-4' In- tramurals l-4' favorite quote: T.V. intelligent but functionally illiterate . . . For one, I didnt think I had a chance of even making the court. After that I really never thought that I would win. Even after winning I really don't know what it is I've won. Sure, I did receive the honor of Homecoming King, but what does this mean? Its hard to tell ii it is a joke or something serious. The Burger King Crown was cool be- cause it was kind of a median from seriousness to silliness. The part about being King I liked the most would have to be when my classmates the Senior Class chanted 'Way to go Garrett, way to go! This made the event special in itself. I also enjoyed seeing my picture in the Texas Cath- olic. I don't know if the title of Homecoming King is an honor or not but to me it is an event and an honor that I will probably remember for the rest of my life. - Garrett Garner ng' Ieffrey Iohn Padberg 1985-88 .4-5 -v W A ' l , ' s 5 1 ., l X GH, Jgl Y as 1 t 1' 4 0 K Paul Vincent Pascal 1984-88 David William Peters 1984-88 French Club 2-45 Sons of Alumni 2-45 SADD 45 Track 3-45 nick- name: Ocamus5 most memorable moment: When Chuck got it in the face with an Almond during the movies at community days5 fa- vorite quote: When the going gets Weird, the weird turn pro. Graduation MICHAEL REILLY -- SALUTATORIAN ADDRESS MAY 28, 1988 YOUR EXCELLENCY BISHOP TSCHOEPE, REVEREND FATHERS, DISTINGUISHED FACULTY, PARENTS, FRIENDS AND LLOW CLASSMATES: THE IESUIT SYSTEM OF EDUCATION IS BASED ON THE CONVICTION THAT EDUCATION IS NOT MERELY THE EN- KDURAGEMENT OF KNOWLEDGE BUT ALSO THE CULTIVATION OF STRONG, RESPONSIBLE CHARACTER. EACH GRAD- ATING CLASS, MUST DETERMINE, IF IT HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL, IN REALIZING THIS PHILOSOPHY. THEIR SUCCESS, IS A NIQUE COMBINATION, OF TALENT, AND THE COURAGE TO PURSUE ITS DEVELOPMENT. THIS GRADUATING CLASS IS ESTAMENT TO THAT DEFINITION OF SUCCESS. WHILE THE CLASS OF 1988 HAS INDEED SOUGHT ACQUISITION OF NOWLEDGE AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE MIND, WE HAVE RIGHTLY PLACED MORE IMPORTANCE ON MATURATION OF HAS SPARKED A CURIOSITY IN MYSELF AND MY CLASSMATES THIS CURIOSITY IS NOT RESTRICTED TO THE RATHER OUR DEVELOPMENT OF MIND HAS OCCURRED PRIMARILY THROUGH EXPERIENCE AS A CLASS H VE THE COURAGE TO QUESTION AND TO PURSUE ANSWERS. THIS TENACITY HAS SECURED MORE KNOWLEDGE PROVIDED IN ALL OUR TEXTBOOKS. IT IS THE KNOWLEDGE OF REALITY, RATHER THAN THEORY: IT IS THE OF PRACTICE FOUNDED UPON PRINCIPLE. A DEVELOPED MIND IS RENDERED USELESS BY AN INACTIVE BODY. THE CLASS OF 1988 IS NOT A STAGNANT OF DEVELOPED MINDS. INSTEAD, WE HAVE SOUGHT TO DEFINE AND ESTABLISH OUR CHARACTER. THIS IS FAR MORE IMPORTANT AND MUCH MORE DIFFICULT THAN THE ACQUISITION OF KNOWLEDGE. KNOWLEDGE AND E VAL UATES OPTIONS,' CHARACTER SELECTS AND IMPLEMENTS THE APPROPRIATE ONE. IT GOVERNS EACH WE MAKE. OUR PURSUIT HAS ENDED IN TRIUMPH. SENIOR YEAR HAS ESTABLISHED OUR COMMITMENT TO OTHER. OUR ENTHUSIASM AND SUPPORT WAS INITIATED AT SCHOOL ATHLETIC EVENTS. THESE GAMES, UN- N IS A PRINCIPLE FOCUS OF THIS HIGH SCHOOL. A SOUND EDUCATION IN BOTH THE SCIENCES AND THE A , . . Y DID NOT OCCUR DAILY CONSEQUENTLY THAT SUPPORT AND ENTHUSIASM FOR EACH OTHER WAS ALSO PRESE T EACH DAY. COMMUNITY DAYS INVITED US TO MAKE A DAILY COMMITMENT. WE HAVE ACCEPTED THE AND RESPONDED THOROUGHLY. OUR SENIOR LOUNGE PERFECTLY ILLUSTRATES THIS DECISION. AT ANY MOMENT, CONVERSATION COULD SWITCH FROM SCHOOL WORK TO THE MAVERICKS' GAME, FROM THE MIDDLE EAST TO CHILDHOOD CARTOONS. IN EACH CASE, RESPECT AND ADMIRATION FOR OUR CLASS- MATES DETERMINES THE TOPIC AND TONE OF THE DIS- CUSSION. THIS REVERENCE IS OUR CHARACTER. IT GOVERNS OUR ACTIONS AND PROVIDES OUR SUCCESS. THE CLASS OF 1988 HAS TESTED THE IESUIT PHILOS- OPHY. THE IESUIT PHILOSOPHY HAS ALSO TESTED THE CLASS OF 1988. TODAY, WE ARE GRADUATED AS YOUNG MEN OF CHARACTER. WE HAVE DEVELOPED THE KNOWLEDGE AND CONVICTION TO SEEK IUSTICE. WE SHALL CONTINUE ITS PURSUIT. IT IS OUR NATURE. TODAY, WE CONFRONT THE FUTURE. BUT IN DOING SO WE MUST ALSO REMEMBER THE PAST AND GIVE THANKS TO THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR DEVELOP- MENT. I WISH TO THANK THE FACULTY FOR THEIR CONCERN, AND ESPECIALLY MY COACHES FOR THEIR ENCOUR- AGEMENT. TO MY PARENTS, I VALUE YOUR INSPIRATION AND SUPPORT. TO MY BROTHER MATTHEW, I WISH YOU EVERY SUC- CESS AND HAPPINESS. AND TO MY FELLOW GRADUATES, I OFFER MY AP- PRECIATION AND GRATITUDE. YOU HAVE GIVEN ME THE STRENGTH TO DEFINE MY CHARACTER AND THE COURAGE TO FULFILL IT. 1988 PRCIVI 74 ome Kind of Wonderful. 76 9 5 fkwi-Q L. 1 1 Iesuit Advances in T.C.I.L. Playoffs Iunior Trey Hammond's one-yard touchdown run with 20 seconds remaining after successfully re- overing an onside kick gave Iesuit a 34-29 victory over Central Catholic. This enabled the Rangers to :dvance to the T.C.I.L. Championships against St. Thomas. After Hammond cut Iesuit's deficit to 29-28 on a 12-yard scoring reception from quarterback Louis Lalady with 1:08 left in the game, Hammond was stopped short of the goal line on a two point conversion Lttempt. The official told me that We were four first downs behind and that the only way to Win Was to go for two voints, Iesuit coach Pasqua said, referring to the tie-breaker rules. I told the official that we would ecover the onside kick and then win it. Pasqua's prediction proved prophetic as the rangers recovered an onside kick at the Central Catholic 4 to set up the game-Winning drive. It was Iesuit's thirteenth state title since the Texas Christian Interscholastic League began play in 1950. Steve Clements, a 220-pound Senior fullback, carried nine times for 97 yards in the first half. St. Thomas never got its offense on track as it suffered from poor field position. Iesuit scored two touchdowns early in the second quarter to go ahead, 14-0. Clements capped an 81-yard drive with a 10- yard touchdown run. On their next possession, the Rangers took advantage of a 15-yard St. Thomas punt to gain good field position at the Eagles' 34. From there, Senior Louis Balady scored on a 31 run with 8:09 left in the half. MM f.- --M ' . A L,1,L. 1. 1 I 2 2 I ! .a V 2 Q iff' M Mak I? A Core of Talent on the Track The 1988 Iesuit Track Team began the year in traditional fashion. The first two weeks of the season enabled the team to run across the fields of the Hockaday campus. As usual, a large number of runners partici- pated at the beginning of the year. However, not everyone remained for the entire season. The few dedicated athletes that made the sacrifice to be a member of the team became a unified group. Iesuit had an early experience with suc- cess when they journeyed to Fort Worth for the first meet at PolyTech. Things were al- ready looking promising for this young squad, Unfortunately, the team suffered many setbacks as the season progressed. Injuries plagued the Rangers, especially the relay teams. For many meets, last minute substitutes were necessary to fill the spots vacated by an injured runner. Surprisingly, the substitutes responded well. The Rangers gathered a strong team and headed for Rockwall. There, the team won First Place hand- ily, with many individuals capturing first place. At the TCIL state meet, the Jesuit team faced stiff competition. A fourth place finish would have been a safe prediction for the team. How- ever, Iesuit began with a strong performance in the field events. Steven Clements handily won the discus and Co-captain Louis Balady won First Place in both the long jump and the Pole Vault. Mike Reilly won the gold for the 3200 meters and 1600 meters runs to lead the Rang- ers in the running events, but the second place win was a result of the effort of the whole team performing personal bests. In the end the Rang- ers beat out third place St. Thomas and gave Strake Iesuit a scare. - Mike Reilly Z Y Q ' 2 ti , 1 g W., ., Www' gi ,,..-W. For the past several years, the team has suffered the effects of having no coach, no pool and a lack of incentive. As a result, the team has not faired well in the compe- tition in a long time. Things started to look up this year however when Chris Bowles, a Iesuit grad came back to Dallas to bring Iesuit back to the top of Texas Swimming. Having coached many top swim teams, Coach Bowles went right to work. He ar- ranged to rent Hockaday's pool enabling the team to work out together for the first time in two years. Only eight swimmers and three divers came out for this year's team. But knowing this is just the first year in a long term building process, Coach Swim Team Rebuil Bowles was not discouraged. He sched- uled the best teams in the area including Pearce, Berkner, and Richardson, three teams who placed high in the public school state meet. The Iesuit swimmers were pushed toward personal achieve- ment and growth of team unity rather than victories. Gaining confidence after every meet, the team finally won their first dual meet against Newman-Smith. New optimism for the future started to form as Don Whitaker and Ron Cullars caught their stride showing that they are ready to lead the team next year. Doug Roberts be- came the top scorer in the fly and back stroke and Lance Stafford served as the utility man by filling the 500 Free style slot instead of the 50 free. The rest of the te members provided the team with supl and every one showed great imprc ment. Although the team finished fifth at State Meet in overall competition, the fort was judged as a success beca every swimmer shaved their times 4 set up a strong base for next year's te which already has promising recr coming to Iesuit next year. The wl' year came to a climax when the te was awarded with the Spirit Awc showing that Iesuit is serious about turning to the front of Texas Swimrrr not only TCIL but all of the state. - Lance Staff it. is r Ei an .p' is akZg?l',2-, cy . ,wt -M-Jammu. 1 i new fig! 9151 ,Q ,-f' so fff if ,A in .,...,.lu 4-'-if ..f,., 1 -. . f : ' fM ':' - ' , ' Qi, - K, ,,,.,-ff' M 4, ,. fx ,W f- .. if K , 2 . .5f:g:.'f 4 .. ,wx px ' . .w x 25 , -.,- Q 2 1 QF . I changed so much while I was a Sophomore, and I looked forward to being a Iunior. It was fun at the time, but it was time to move on. But to what? Would this year be better than last year? What exactly does it mean to be a Iunior at Iesuit? Now, during the neverending weeks of Iunior year, I realize what it is to be a Iunior. It is a time for growth. Former Sophomores grow into future Seniors who, in turn, become ready to take on the challenges of the world. Both in his school life and personal life, the Iunior takes on more responsibilities. He learns how to approach life in a way that benefits him as a person, physically and mentally. That is the purpose of the Iunior Cross Mass. It symbolizes class unity and the community that is Iesuit. He gains freedom whether he is ready or not. Iuniors find themselves with more opportunities than they had in previous years. Iunior year offers its many challenges. All of a sudden, Iuniors start worrying about such things as college requirements, the SAT and ACT, the right choice of a college, and the future itself. There are some advantages of being a Iunior. You still have football and basketball games to go to so you can scream your head off. It also seems that the parties and friends are more abundant. There are also things to look forward to. You finally get the chance to order your class ring, and there is the long awaited prom. Being a Iunior at Iesuit means being able to accept the responsibilities that will be given to you your Senior year. Iunior year means growing into mature people who can be role models for younger students and, at the same time, being happy with who you are. - Chris Goodson Picture Not A v a il a bl e Eric Abraham David Mitch Brian Iohn Iubin Kang Kassen Katosic Koepnick Kostohryz Iefi Cole Kratz Kricken Roland Daniel Lund Madden x Edward Steve David Chris Brent Iames Languell Larsen Libby Logan Ieff Maher all V U. s William Mallillin Martinez McGraw 4-A me 'xr' Carter Chris Gary Charles Michael Ierry McNabb Meadors Melle Miller Moran Morgan Andrew Lamont Morrone Moss Patrick Shaun Geoffrey David Mullen Murphy Neal Netherland Pnc'l'ure No? It seemed just like any other cheerleading workshop: tryouts when April came. But Iesuit was in for a big surprise. When tryouts were over, eight guys and eight girls, of astronomical talents were chosen for the varsity squad and ten girls, equally as talented, if not more, were chosen for the junior varsity squad. The outcome that could be produced from the two would be one of grandeur and awe. Led by their captain, Stacie Peake, the varsity squad immediately went into preparation for camp in Iune, as did the junior varsity, helped by Katie Galagher. In the beginning of the last full Week in june of 1987, both squads went to SMU's Summer Cheer- leading Camp. With a full schedule of activities, workshops, and competitions, The Iesuit Cheer- leaders attended more than just an ordinary workshop, but also developed an injury list a mile long. This however didn't stop them from receiving excellent scores at competition, two All-American Cheerleading nominations for --w s , Iohn Harrington and Karen Phillips, and nom- f-in V , M... IVA, ations from floor competitions to go to nationals. Competition did not end after camp though. The Varsity got back together in August to prepare for the Foley's xmpetition at Colin Creek Mall. For two weeks, every morning, they practiced a new routine. Their hard word work at them into the finals for the following week. As the school year began the cheerleaders led the football team to yet another state victory. Modeled after college juads, the varsity incorporated many intricate partner stunts that colleges use, and as a result, not only did they ad the fans in cheers, but also gave them a show. With their strength, talent and determination, the Varsity and the I.V. with the help of NCA coaches Bobby Deitrick nd Stacie Deavers, prepared for the Regional competitions at Arlington High School. Starting out from scratch again, they learned new routines with the use of all the talent they had. Alter extensively orking for two months, both the Varsity and I.V. squads captured Regional trophies and places at the National ,nals held in Dallas on December 27-28, 1987. Both squads showed that cheerleading is not just having a loud voice and spirit, but requires discipline, atermination and dedication. - Xavier Rojas 135 -fue .1 as if 'ig 'IF Q3 'SJ ix Q. mug 5 f - MA v an x 1 1 on omouz 4 --is- ' Since 1963, the Lone Rangers have been running nrong at Iesuit. The oup is most commonly noted for their spirit and art. The Lone Rangers express their spirit through cheering t the games, selling spirit pins, ribbons and programs, nd also producing art announcing dances, contests and Emes. As The Band Played Cn . . . As the TCBA State Champion Iesuit-Ursiline Ranger Band embarked on another season, hopes were high. Since the band had lost a number of good players, some people in the band were rather pessimistic about the upcoming season. Despite this, the band went on to show up every band they marched against, during the halftimes. Spirits were high as the year progressed. Led by drum majors Mike Cassidy and George Christon, the band prepared for their first competition ol the year, The Parade of Champions. Realizing of course that they would be marching up against all oi the best bands in the state of Texas, they put on a spirited show. Spirits were still high as the IURB started to prepare for the State Competition that was soon to follow. Going on to State Marching Contest, the band captured the Best Homline Trophy. The Best Drurnline Trophy, and the Su- perior Trophy. Later into the year, concert season started and the band put on a fine Christmas concert. The State Concert contest was soon to come. With the help oi directors Mr. E. Thaynye Tolle, Ms. lane Chambers, and Mr. Robert Ledbetter the Band went on to do well in state. Even more was accomplished when the State Iazz Contest came along. The Iazz Contest was perhaps the best best showing of the band's full talent. Capturing the state title, about eighty percent ot the band went on to play in the All Star All State Iazz Ensemble as part of Iesuit's Art Festival to the first weekend of May. . The truth is, you stopped wearing name tags a few months into Fresh- man Year and some Sophs do occasionally take Latin. But Wait, you exclaim, I thought that was what Sophomore Year was all about! Never fear. They say Sophomore Year is the forgotten year. They're wrong. Too many unforgettable events happen to you when you are a Sophomore. First of all, you acquire a new respect. The teachers respect you more, as do the upperclassmen and, of course, the Freshmen. Along with this esteem comes responsibility. Your teachers and you yourself expect more out of you, and everyone expects you to set an example for the Freshmen. This may seem pretty tough, but if you can live up to everyone's expectations, you get a feeling of self- pride that is hard to beat. Hmm, you're thinking, so far Sophomore Year sounds like a lot of work. lust be patient, I haven't gotten to the good part yet. Since this class has had a year to make some friends, they now have an opportunity to meet all the others in their class. Not only do they make friends within their class, but Sophomores can and do make friends with the Freshmen and the upperclassmen since they don't have to worry about the lowly freshman barrier. In short, during Soph- omore year, you form friendships that will last the rest of your life. Wow, you say, maybe Sophomore Year is something to look forward to. - Scott Rylander Mazen Chris Brent Ruben Ladell Fred Hamza Hatcher Heinen Hernandez Hill Hopkins Pat Malt Bernard Ioshua Adaryll Daniel Huff Irwin Iezercak Iohnson Iordan Kang Chris Pat Klee Lancaster Iohn Young Ledford Lee ufW Daniel Lanicek Picfure Noi Available Augustin Lee Peter Travis Chris Katcha Kee Kelly X ,frda H Matt Ion William Lehrfeld Lenzer Little George Pat Brian Rudolph Lucas Lynch MacMaster Mappus IV Chris Maravilla 4599 Ioe Michael Kevin Matrone McConnell McCracken Piciure No? You may house their bodies but not their souls, For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. MMU! Letter From The Editor Iune 10, 1988 To the Students of Iesuit, Here it is. the end of the year and the book is starting to resemble the finished product that it will eventually be. Through all the count- less hours I have spent on this project, I never thought it would get finished. Partly because of the economy. This year, Iesuit didn't bother to hire a moderator for the yearbook, therefore, no photographer. The whole book was left up to the students, which was fun in a Way. For the first time in my yearbook career, it was me who actually edited the book. In the past, it was the moderator. Not to mention that Fr. Mike was a good moderator, but being the president of the school, he was absent from most of the meetings. I do wish to thank him for the good job he did. You might have noticed that there are only Senior ads in the back of the book. What happened to the business ads you ask? Well, ever since that fateful day in October, Dallas has really been watching its money, as it went out the window! Even though we lowered the costly ads prices for them, they still would not bite. I would like to apologize for any inconvenience this might have cost you. Also I would like to thank all the parents who contributed to the book by purchasing one of the forementioned ads. As I said before, the Whole book was left up to the students. I would like to thank Mike, Dax, Beak, Mark and Shane for helping me with the photography. To the writers, Michael, Tim, Mike, Chris, Scott, Lance, Ed, Xavi, Phillippe, Garrett, Mike, and Brett, without your help the book would only be a picture book. To the faculty and administration, thank you for the memories before, during, and after school. Those are among the most treasured. Thanks especially go out to Mr. Oglesby for lending a helping hand and a listening ear whenever I needed it. To my fellow peers and close friends, I wish you all the best. Thank you for helping get through the challenges and hardships posed by Iesuit for me in the past four years. Our class is very fortuitous in that as a group we are all very different. It is now time for us to move on. All of our per- sonalities and strengths shall go out into the world and lead it closer to perfection, because it needs all the help it can get now. If there was one saying that can sum up my Iesuit career, it would be: 'A fine time was had by all.' With fond memories and hope for what is to come.
