J., To the Class of 1960- Your Faculty lives on hope, on the hope that one day after all the corrections and inspirations that it has given you there will shine forth in your young life a sun of surpassing achievement. This hope keeps your priest and scholastic and lay teachers working nights and teaching days. Hope is the thing that makes your dreams come true. Without hope there is little effort on your part and no competition from you in any sport or extracurricular or study. It is only hope that keeps you work- ing at the new and difficult matter. You hope that you will leam, and thus hoping, you work until you do. just as you, your teachers, your parents, have hope, so do I. My hope is a little different from yours. You have never seen hope come true. Your hope is like a blind man groping for the thing that will guide him and help him. The blind manis hope is tentative, exploratory, and unsure. My hope is confident and sure and well-founded. Many young men have preceded youg the path that you are treading is well-defined and often used. There have been many who have gone this same way. I have watched them as I am watching you. So to every Jesuit student, l say be filled with energetic hope, but be diligent in work, too. Explore, attempt, try, compete until you find the thing that you can do excellently. Having found it, pursue it with all diligence and hope. Hoping and working will bring a result that will surprise and delight all-you, your parents, your teachers, and your God. Sincerely yours in Christ.
