HELEN WHITE Assistant to Librarian WHE THE GOING GETS TOUGH K I 1 : 3 H A J., To the Class of 1960- Your Faculty lives on hope, on the hope that one day after all the corrections and inspirations that it has given you there will shine forth in your young life a sun of surpassing achievement. This hope keeps your priest and scholastic and lay teachers working nights and teaching days. Hope is the thing that makes your dreams come true. Without hope there is little effort on your part and no competition from you in any sport or extracurricular or study. It is only hope that keeps you work- ing at the new and difficult matter. You hope that you will leam, and thus hoping, you work until you do. just as you, your teachers, your parents, have hope, so do I. My hope is a little different from yours. You have never seen hope come true. Your hope is like a blind man groping for the thing that will guide him and help him. The blind manis hope is tentative, exploratory, and unsure. My hope is confident and sure and well-founded. Many young men have preceded youg the path that you are treading is well-defined and often used. There have been many who have gone this same way. I have watched them as I am watching you. So to every Jesuit student, l say be filled with energetic hope, but be diligent in work, too. Explore, attempt, try, compete until you find the thing that you can do excellently. Having found it, pursue it with all diligence and hope. Hoping and working will bring a result that will surprise and delight all-you, your parents, your teachers, and your God. Sincerely yours in Christ. All-State The undefeated 1959 Jesuit Rangers. RANGERS SWEEP BY WILMER-HUTCHINS IN FIRST GAME OF SEASON With less than three minutes gone in the first quarter, Ranger halfback Bill Taylor snatched an Eagle aerial out of the air and set sail on an 85-yard touchdown scamper. Thus began what was to turn out to be the first undefeated, untied season in the history of Jesuit High School. Mid-way through the second quarter reserve fullback Biff Hup- feld, who was the gameis leading ground-gainer, burst through the line and out-distanced the Eagle secondary on a 32lyard touch- down jaunt. Mickey Durbin kicked his second straight extra-point, and the score at halftime read 14-0 in favor of the Rangers. The second half was dominated by a pair which was to receive much attention throughout the season. The reference is to the combination of Bob Black's passing and Dave Enright's catching of the pigskin. Black, who finished the night with six out of eleven completions, threw two scoring passes to Enright, one for six yards and the other for thirty-six. Mickey Durbin's final conversion left the final score at 27-0. DAVE ENRIGHT-'60 End 4 Back All-Greater Dallas T.C.l.L. All-State BILL TAYLOR-'60 All-Greater Dallas T.C.I.L. All-State Bob McDermott cuts outside for yardage against Terrell. BLACK PAGES RANGERS T0 WIN OVER MIGHTY TERRELL Bob Black, the Ranger's do-everything quarterback, did every- thing but catch his own passes as Jesuit handed the Terrell Tigers their first home town defeat in over two years. What the junior field general did do was to complete 19 out of 33 passes, two of them for touchdowns and another for the two-point conversion which provided the winning Ranger margin. Out of the 340 yards which Jesuit had in total offense, Black accounted for 219 with his aerial barrage. Bob McDermott, who caught the winning touchdown pass, a 14- yarder, also deserved much credit for the win. That goes as well for the recipient of Blackie other T.D. pass, little number 44, Bill Taylor. He scored the Rangers, first touchdown on a 48-yard pass and run play, and then gathered in a pass from Black for the all-important two-point conversion that won the game. LAST QUARTER PASSES PUSH RANGERS PAST SEAGOVILLE Bob Black connected on only one third of his passes against the Seagoville Dragonsg but two of those passes that he completed were for fourth quarter touchdowns that carried the Rangers to their third victory of the season. With the Dragons holding a 12-0 lead half-way through the final period, tackle Jerry Alfieri intercepted a Seagoville pass and returned, it to the Ranger 4-3. Several plays later Black hit soph- omore Robert Duron for a 46-yard pass-and-run play which made the score 12-6. Blackis pass to Bill Heinen for the conversion made the score 12-8. The next time the Rangers got the ball, they were on their way to the winning T.D., which came on a 4-7-yard pass play from Black to Enright. Again the two-point conversion was good, this time on a pass to Owens. The Jesuit defense was led by linebacker Frank Morales, who wound up the game with twenty tackles. RANGERS THROTTLE BULLDOGS IN RAIN AND MUD The Jesuit Rangers overcame the elements of nature long enough to push across the only touchdown of the game and, thus, salvage their fourth win of the season. It was a cold, wet, uncomfortable evening for the fansg but they went away satisfied, for once again their team had won. It was Bob Black, ordinarily a passing star, who dove across the goal-line from two yards out for the Ranger scoreg but the person most responsible for the ball being on the two yard line was Bill Taylor, the leading Jesuit ballcarrier for the night with 55 yards in 12 carries. The names of Frank Morales, Pat Parkerson, Mike Bulger, Mike Lindley, and Robert Duron were constantly heard over the public address system as they made tackle after tackle on the Bulldog runners. It was this rock-ribbed defense which was actually re- sponsible for the Ranger victory. E , -mmf? A K' is gXf if is BOB MCDERMOTT-'60 BOB BLACK 60 FELIX ALF IERI 60 Back Back Tackle T.C.I.L. RANGER OFFENSE CLICKS FOR BIG YARDAGE IN ROMP OVER MESQUITE Jesuit used a well-oiled, balanced offense to grind out their fifth victory of the year. The victim this time was Mesquite. The Skeeters found themselves suprisingly outmanned by a Ranger squad which grolmd out a total of 4-36 yards on the ground and in the air. The running game, paced by Bill Taylor with 120 yards, kept the ball within scoring distanceg and the passing game, manned by Bob Black and his eleven out of fifteen completions, furnished the scoring punch. Black threw touchdown passes to Bill Heinen, Taylor, Dave Enright, and Mike Owens. The fifth Ranger T.D. came on a 7-yard run by Taylor. Taylor ran two extra points across, and Black passed to Heinen for the third conversion. JIM ZURLIS-'61 MIKE OWENS-'61 CARL PEELECSRINI-'61 Center I I 0 End Har T.C.1.L. Enright personally accounted for 26 of the Ranger points and tumed in a bang-up job on defense. On the defensive side, Dave received some able assistance from the 'falways where you want him guy, Frank Morales. Besides being credited with 15 tackles, Morales recovered two Tiger fumbles. Sharing defensive honors with Morales was Mike Bulger, who led the defense in tackles with sixteen. One suprising phase of the defensive game was the fact that 29 of the Ranger tackles were made by backs, an unusually large number of tackles for a defensive backfield to make. Bob Black added three more touchdown passes to his record, two to Enright and one to Bill Taylor. Enright scored his other two touchdowns on an interception and a pass from Mickey Durbin. Both conversions came on passes from Black, one to Mike Owens and the other to Enright. Once agai.n a Ranger was honored by the Morning News as their player of the week. Dave Enright and Bill Taylor were the big guns for the Rangers in their seventh straight victory. Enright scored the first Ranger T.D. on a 51-yard pass and run play from Bob Black. Bill Taylor galloped 81 yards for the second Ranger score. The score still stood 14-12 as the fourth quarter opened, with the Commodores in the lead. A few minutes later, Bill Heinen countered on a 13-yard scamper. Taylor and Heinen each converted after their touchdowns. Heinen added the final score late in the fourth quarter on a 20-yard jaunt through the Comet secondary. The middle of the Ranger offensive line, composed of Felix Alfieri, Mike Bulger, Jim Zurlis, Carl Pellegrini, and Olan Adams, continually opened up gaping holes in the Classen line for the Ranger backs to charge through. This game, in particular, was a team victory. LARRY LAWRENCE-'62 End Tackle JERRY ALFIERIu,62 RANGERS 22 CLASSEN 0 Dave Enright shows his pass-catching style. Bill Taylor, playing the best game of his career, garnered 184 yards in I3 carries for a 14.2 yard average per carry. Bill Heinen, for the second time of the year, tallied three touchdowns in a single game. Taylor was responsible for the other two scores. Jesuit's ace field general, Bob Black, completed his seventeenth touchdown pass during the game of the season during the game. The Ranger defense was paced by tri-captain Mike Bulger, Frank Morales, and Frank Gonzalez. This trio combined for a total of 53 tackles during the game. Special praise is also due for the fine job senior tackles Olan Adams and Felix Alfieri did in opening up the holes which ,lesuitls galloping halfback used during the game. , 55 T' was I . . , .'.. RANGERS END PERFECT SEASON WITH FOURTH CONSEC- UTIVE T.C.I.L. CHAMPIONSHIP The mighty, mighty Rangersw ended a perfect season with an almost perfect game. The Rangers found it hard to do anything wrong as they marched to an unprecedented fourth conmutive T.C.I.L. championship. The blocking, the tackling, the execution, the running, and, in general, anything else that goes to make up a great football team: all were present as the Rangers marched over highly-touted Bishop Byrne of Port Arthur, 34-20. Every member of the team was outstandingg but those among the outstanding who were outstanding were Bill Taylor, Bill Heinen, Bob Black, Dave Enright, Mike Bulger, Carl Pellegrini, Olan Adams, and Felix Alfieri. Two of the Ranger counters were scored by Taylor and two by Heinen. The fifth tally came when Mike Owens recovered Bill Johnsonis fumble in the end zone. One last debt of gratitude and congratulations should be ren- dered to the coaching staff for the fine job that it did in bringing Jesuit its first perfect season.
