The 1958 Lay! Roundup includes such important events as the Phil play King Lear, the prom, senior class night, and graduation. L. NX'ren. S.J., Moderator and Coach Steffen Claiborne, Humes. Fish. Fencing is an ancient art. Back when lion-hearted knights were in full swing, the foil fa practice swordj was to the red-blooded noble-man what the pistol is to the red-blooded modern-man, and the ray-gun will be to the red-blooded space-man. Fenc- ing is not for sissies. A good fencer combines the quick reflexes of a basketball guard, the stamina of a miler, and the balance of a tennis singles champ. Two years ago, Jesuit's true artists of the foil banded together under the guidance of Mr. Wren, S.J., to form the first Jesuit Fencing Club. Since that time, members have met regularly in the base- ment for a bit of running about and sword clashing which has done a good job of awakening the average student to the rather unusual and off-beat ritual. Boasting a fan-pleasing fast break, the Varsity 5 simply outran many of their highly favored opponents. Much of the success of the season was due to the hard work of Coach Bill Durick, who ended his basketball coaching with a winning season. Coach Durick started his final year with only two returning lettermen, but by midaseason he had instilled in the squad a great hustling and scrapping spirit. Perhaps the best examples were shown in the Wood- row Wilson and Thomas jefferson games. Woodrow Wilson, city champ and state finalist, dropped the fighting Rangers by only three points, and Thomas jefferson, a top city power defeated the Rangers by only two points. This was at mid-season. The team had to be at its peak for the T.C.I.L. state tournament at the end of the basketball year. Coach Durick carefully brought the team along and in the semi-finals of the T.C.l.L, tourney the hot-shooting Rangers hit 5670 from the floor. But the red-hot Eagle from St. Thomas hit a whopping 7370, snapping the squads hope of giving Coach Durick a T.C.l.L. state championship in his final year.
