Commanding Officer James W. Pattison Commander United States Navy This cruise book contains the memories of our deploy- ment to the Mediterranean and marks the culmination of a very busy year m the life of JESSE L. BROWN and the men who sailed her. It all began in late March 1987 when we were recalled from an underway Surface Warfare Training Week. A few days later we were underway for an undetermined length of time to go look for submarines in the North Atlantic. As was usually the case, when we went look- ing for submarines we found them. We returned to Charleston in late April and continued to be the ship Comdesron Four picked to handle the short notice tasking in addition to our normally busy schedule. We participated in several more Surface Warfare Training Weeks, trained Midshipman, went to the Caribbean to conduct Naval Gunfire Support Training and train Army Spotters, conducted ASW ops at Aufec. includ- ing the successful firing of both ASROC and torpedos. On 29 July were told that our deployment had been moved up five months. We would now deploy on 29 Septem- ber. In August we were in the advanced phase of FLEETEX and again JESSE L. BROWN and her crew distin- guished themselves. We ran full power for nine hours to get into position for a coordinated ASUW strike and showed a pair of destroyers how to do active ASW. The deployment began 29 September after a very busy month in port The transit to the Mediterranean was filled with final training opportunities so that we. along with the rest of the CORAL SEA Battle Group, would be ready for anything. On our arrival into the Med our Battle Group, joined up with the SARATOGA Battle Group for opera- tions and then that memorial gunnery display by IOWA and our entry into Augusta Bay From there it was three weeks of continuous ASW which resulted in being awarded the Commander Sixth Fleet Hook em Award for ASW excellence. A fuel shortage in the Sixth Fleet reduced our underway time after that first patrol, but we did get to take part in an interesting exercise with another Mediterranean country and then towards the end of the deployment we were m a NATO ASW exercise working with Italian and German ships. We also worked with the rest of the Battle Group on two occasions but mostly we were by ourselves. We filled in the rest of our deployment with port visits in several different countries. Amoung the favorites were Palma. Trieste, and Haifa. We left Rota heading home on 19 March with the Atlantic Propulsion Examining Board embarked. A little over 24 hours later the Super Snipes had swept the OPPE. All that was left of the deployment was a peaceful nine day transit across the Atlantic which ended on the 29th with a joyous reunion in Charleston, our favorite port.
