Jenkins principal. He worked hard to accomplish the many tasks that were his responsibilities. During the year Mr. Stewart initiated many changes that he hoped would benefit the students. One change was the split- lunch session. Since open campus had been discontinued, the split-lunch session seemed like a practical idea. Mr. Stewart also became firmer on many school prob- lems. One was smoking. A great reduction of smoking areas was made in hopes of discouraging the students from smoking. Mr. Stewart, a former student, had come back to Jenkins after an absence of nine- teen years. During that time he had served in many schools in the Chatham system. THE BIG CHIEF ABOVE A thoughtful moment. RIGHT: Is this Mon- day or Tuesday? UPPER: Never ending paper work. 18 PRINCIPAL 19 RULES ARE GOOD FOR YOU The past year Jenkins High School added a newcomer to the administration staff. Ms. Virginia Edwards, the assistant principal, came to Jenkins after serving at Myers for three years as a social studies teacher for SEARCH students. She had also served five years as a social teacher at Savannah High and at Windsor Forest as a curriculm specialist Her main duty this past year was to assist specifically in the operation of the school. Mr. Earl Berksteiner served as Jenkins’ other assistant principal. He worked closely this past year with many school activities, sales and fund-raising projects. Both assistant principals worked hard to benefit the school and to make sure it ran in a smooth, orderly way. 20 ADMINISTRATION 21 DILIGENT ALL During the past year the secretaries of H.V. Jenkins kept up their reputation of being efficient and reliable. They worked hard to keep the school running in an order- ly manner. In the main office Mrs. Jane Mell served as Mr. Stewart's personal secretary and Mrs. Brenda Sinclair took charge of the financial matters of the school. Serving in the attendance office was Mrs. Terri Mehlhom. She was in charge of keep- ing track of the late buses and of supervising the students who signed in late. 22 SECRETARIES A NEW SYSTEM COUNSELORS 23 ABOVE: All this paper work, ugh! LEFT: Ah. letmesee . UPPER: Always on the phone This past year Jenkins lost one counselor, but gained another. The new counselor, Mr. Mark Smith, took Mrs. Hollowell’s place. Before he came to Jenkins, he had been a counselor at Appling County High School in Baxley, Georgia, for six years. Mr. Smith served as the ninth and tenth grades counselor. Mrs. Virgina Preetorius was counselor for the eleventh and twelfth grades. This past year Mr. Fields worked with attendance and acted as counselor when the others were not available. Mrs. Patton served, again, as their competent secretary. The whole staff of the counselors’ office worked hard helping the students to adjust to the new semester system. CLEAN-UP DUTY ABOVE: Mrs. Bryant hard at work. RIGHT: Mrs. Washington and Mrs. Dauis meet again. UPPER: Mr Bynes gets a bird's-eye view. 24 MAINTENANCE Mr. Willie Bynes completed another year as HVJ’s head custodian with Ms. Washing- ton serving as his assistant. Keeping the classrooms in satisfactory condition, as well as keeping the grounds and school clean, were their main duties. Helping them with some of these jobs were Ms. Bryant, a full- time maid attached to Jenkins, and the part- time maids sent by the board of Education. All worked hard to keep HVJ in good run- ning condition. MUNCH TIME The cafeteria staff worked very efficently this past year, offering the students two separate lunch times. Splitting the lunches made the line run more smoothly and less- ened the crowds in the lunchroom. The school cafeteria offered three choices of meals: a hot meal, a bagged lunch, and a salad bar. Mrs. Kaigler was in charge of the cafeteria staff which worked diligently planning and preparing enjoyable, well-balanced meals for the students. CAFETERIA 25 DO WARRIORS GET SICK? The infirmary care ended another year under the direction of Mrs. B. Verrett. She took care of those students who were ill or injured, giving the best emergency care possible to those students and notifying the parents if necessary. She helped students with personal problems as well. Mrs. Verrett kept a daily log to account for those stu- dents who entered and left the infirmary. Hearing and vision tests, under the su- pervision of Mrs. Verrett, were adminis- tered to the tenth grade students and those recommended by the counselor. A blood pressure check for students and faculty was also held during the year. ABOVE What do you weigh? ABOVE LEFT Soy 'Ah! UPPER: You aren't sick! 26 INFIRMARY READ-A-MANIA Last year Mrs. Edith Brooks served again as the head librarian and Mrs. Mildred Mal- lory as the assistant librarian. The library staff worked hard all year to keep available such equipment as the over- head, filmstrip projectors, record players, V.T.R. machines, 16mm projectors and cassette players. All of these machines were designed to help the teachers use better teaching techniques. The library also provided books and magazines for the reading enjoyment of the students during their leisure time. Though working under an extremely tight budget, the library still provided mate- rials that were in constant demand. LIBRARY 27 DIRECTORS ACADEMICS STUDENT LIFE CLUBS SPORTS CLASSES COMMUNITY LITERALLY SPEAKING The past year the English Department offered only a few courses, but they were interesting ones: Grammar and Composi- tion, Literature, and English Lab. Under the semester system the students were allowed to study in one specific area for eighteen weeks. The English staff this past year at HVJ included Mrs. Laura Breedlove, depart- ment head, Mrs. Martha Coffield, Mrs. Dwan Davis, Mr. James Gordon, Mr. Tho- mas Lewis, Mrs. Jeannette Ready, Mrs. Carolyn Siefferman, Ms. Karen Stephen- son, Mrs. Loretta Wallace and Mrs. Emma Jean Conyers. The department offered courses in Span- ish, taught by Mrs. Lorayne Gary, and in French and Latin, taught by Mrs. Josephine Amari. Basic and advanced-level classes were available for each language. The use of the language laboratory speakers, and special activities contributed much to the success of the classes. 42 FOREIGN LANGUAGE ABOVE Now, let's get this straight the first time! The band students participated in half- time shows at all the football games and in many different activities. During the fall Homecoming activities this past year the band played at the night pep rally. For the halftime show of the Homecoming game, held at Memorial Sta- dium, the band played the theme from the movie “Endless Love. In the spring the band competed in the First District Band Festival held at Arm- strong State College. The band also partici- pated in “A Night Of Halftime Shows” held at Memorial Stadium. BAND 49 P-R-N-D-l-2 Last year the Driver’s Education Depart- ment had as instructors Coach Aliffi and Coach Herndon. Coach Herndon had already been at Jenkins for many years. Coach Aliffi came to Jenkins from Brandon High School in Brandon, Rorida, where he had taught for one year. Driver’s Education was offered to stu- dents fifteen years or older who had a learn- er’s or driver’s license. The course taught the fundamentals of the car and of driving. After each student passed the class work, he then went to the range and road. The stu- dent was required to drive a total of six hours. After completing the class and the road work, the student received a certificate for driver’s education. ABOVE: And away we go! Under her guidance the students designed many different kinds of art projects. Mrs. Friedenberg worked closely with the students, enabling them to obtain the best art instruction and giving them help that would benefit them in the future. The stud- ents were allowed to express themselves by designing their own projects. UPPER: Pound, pound, pound.... ABOVE: Dorothy draws another tine. Mrs. Elise Shemoff. head of the depart- ment, was the B.D. teacher. She helped students with their personal and school problems. Mrs. J. Robinson and Mrs. Carol Vincent helped PVT students to find and to keep jobs. Mrs. Cowart and Mrs. Merk gave extra help to students enrolled in the SLD program. The SEARCH program for academically advanced students was coor- dinated by Ms. Ebert. 53 RELATED SERVICES Mr. Wallace Hayes headed the CVAE program this past year at HVJ. Coordinated Vocational Academic Education was a program that introduced students to meaningful work and profitable careers. Skills were taught which produced the greatest benefit to the student, the school and the community. A student enrolled in the CVAE program learned to set goals. The student learned the relationship be- tween academic and vocational training. CVAE forged strong links between the students and the opportunities available to him in his community. 54 RELATED SERVICES LEARN TO EARN The two main divisions of Trade and In- dustrial education were DCT and Drafting. DCT, Diversified Cooperative Training, was a program that provided effective job training for students. This program trained juniors and seniors old enough to work in a variety of occupations by making use of the business and industrial establishments of the local community as training agencies. Drafting dealt with the technique of read- ing and drawing blueprints and the ele- ments of engineering drafting. ABOVE: Students enjoy class. ABOVE BIGHT: Deep thought . .. There were several changes; Warrior Day and Squaw Day were not allowed and in their places were Tacky Day and Pajama- top and Sock Day. The week was very in- teresting, and the people had on some very eye-catching costumes. The week's activities consisted of Mon- day — Tacky Day, Tuesday — Pajama top and Sock day, Wednesday — 50’s Day, Thursday — Character Day, Friday — Red and Gray Day. Because the students wanted to show off their school spirit by dressing up, each day of the week was viewed as a great success. 62 HOMECOMING Thursday Night during Homecoming week a night pep rally took place to cele- brate the tradition of the warriors. This past year the warriors had the privilege of “Burning the Cadets” in a huge bonfire. The warriors in true warrior fashion wanted a victory turned into defeat for the warriors. This past years Homecoming Queen was crowned during halftime activities at the game Friday night. This years Home- coming Queen was Theresa DeCrencenzo and her court consisted of Wanda Gresham and Tammi Dooley. Last year, the H.V, Jenkins Drama De- partment presented their version of the “Elephant Man’’ and was the first high school in the United States to put on this production. The play was performed at Jenkins for three consecutive evenings and was also presented at the Georgia Theatre Conference in November where it placed second. Because of financial matters though, the players were unable to com- pete in any other state-wide conferences. Under the direction of Tom Lewis, the de- partment put on the musical, “Grease” which was performed during the spring. Both plays and the year proved to be very successful. The 1982 Miss Sequoyah Pageant was held in the Wilder Middle School Cafeteria on January 20, 1982, at 8:00 p.m. Many students and parents filled the cafeteria in anticipation of the special event. During the evening, Ms. Stephenson, Mistress of Ceremonies, introduced five of Jenkins lovely senior girls. Each girl participated in several competitions— talent, evening gown, and questionnaire — in hopes that she would win the title of Miss Sequoyah. Between the competition periods, the audience was entertained by several students, each with a special talent. Michael Thomas played a few songs on the piano, and Jack McCollum and Kim Albright entertained with the title song from the musical, “New York.” A special treat was the appearance of Jenkins own Dance Ensemble, consisting of Ricky Grant, Cathy Cooper, Bernard Murchison, and Charles Collier. The coordinator of the pageant was Michael Crawford, who was assisted by Tammi Dooley. Cindy Dotson, a local dance instructor, choreographed the opening number. MISS SEQUOYAH 67 TALENT Ii The highlight of the 1982 Miss Sequoyah Pageant was the talent competition. A vari- ety of talent was presented, beginning with Angie Chasteen singing Killing Me Soft- ly.” Dorothy Williams followed with a dramatic monologue, and Julie Sancomb then sang “1 Honestly Love You.” Next, Julie Forehand performed an acrobatic dance routine to the song The Fifth of Beethoven.” Sherry Lee ended the pre- sentation with her own choreographed number to the song “McArthur’s Park.” Following this part of the program, each girl modeled a lovely evening gown, answered a specific question, and awaited the judges’ final decision. The twenty-one staff members, assisted by their advisor, Ms. Coffield, and Editor Angela Hagan, participated much more in the production of their newspaper. By plan- ning their own layouts and typesetting, these students were able to learn more about how a newspaper is put together. The features page was emphasized more this year, containing new sections for an outstanding Warrior, problems, and issues of the day. The Naval ROTC program has grown in the last couple of years. Led by Major Stout, Chief Petty Officer Coffey and Chief Otis Young, this organization boosted 145 members this year. C.P.O. Coffey attri- buted this success to student interest and a desire for discipline. The cadets, who are under no Navy obligation, participated in a variety of activities, including parades and field trips aboard navy vessels and on Naval bases. NJROTC is a course in Naval Science. Cadets learn ideals of citizenship, ocean sci- ences, U.S. History, etc. in addition to regu- lar marching drills. The United States Navy provided uni- forms and the majority of the funds. The program, however, sponsored skating par- ties, car washes, and military banquets to help raise money. The girls’ schedule consisted of fourteen games and a region tournament. The sea- son started off a bit rough but by the end of the season, the girls had shown consider- able improvement. Then came the boost everyone needed—a 55-8 rout of Tompkins. The Warriors could do nothing wrong, scoring by any and eve- ry way possible. Savannah High came next with a win of 7-0 for Jenkins. Next came B.C. and a chance to dethrone the Cadets, but luck was against the Warriors who lost 21-7. A new addition to the warriors coaching staff, Vic Alliffi, guided his young players to a 3-2 record for the overall season. These Spirited young Warriors went into their last game with an even record of 2 wins and 2 losses to meet their biggest game of the season against the Cadets of Benedictine. Fighting hard through all four quarters, showing speed on offense and strength on defense, the War- riors with disappointment lost a very close and exciting game in the last few minutes. Jenkins entered into the annual Christmas tournament with high hopes only to receive a 2nd place loss to SHS in a last second basket. After the tournament the team won 4 out of their next 7 games. Once again Savannah High played a part in Jenkins, with basketball coach Larry Burke, taking command of the Warriors. Coach Burke, a former coach of SHS, was now leading the Warriors against his old team. Mb $ ? • ' Energy Management For many years we have been committed to making our operations more energy efficient by using wood waste, such as bark and sawdust, for fuel. In 1980, we made great strides toward this objective. We produced each ton of paper in Savannah with 20% less fossil fuel than in 1979. Since 1972 we have reduced our fossil fuel usage by 41%. To continue this energy saving performance, a $112 million power boiler is under construction at the Savan- nah Plant. The combination coal and wood waste boiler will be completed the first half of 1982. It will provide the plant with an energy independence it has never before had and will reduce our dependency on fuel oil by the equivalent of a million barrels a year, g At Union Camp we are taking significant steps in deal- ■ ing with problems that confront all of us. I have learned a great deal about myself, other people, and about Jenkins High School. The ideals I began with as an editor were to have the best book ever, the best staff, a dynamic learning experience, and lots of good fun. I shot for the stars (at least I did my best) and hoped every night that someone wouldn’t forget to complete an assignment (it does happen). Making it through made me proud of my team. There was a satisfaction that kept me going. The Sequoyah is not the finished product of just one person, it is the product of all. I would like to take this opportunity to thank publicly my annual staff for their loyalty and fine work. A very special thanks must go to Mrs. Amari, Mr. Hayes, Mr. Ron Norman, Hunter Publishing Company representative, my parents, and Jeff Rogers. It would have been very hard to fulfill my responsibility without their advice and encouragement The goal of the 1982 Sequoyah was to show the opportunities that the school provides for its students. These opportunities for character building include working with the faculty, participating in sports, clubs, and other extracurricular activities. Also, during his four years at Jenkins High the student is given the opportunity to grow and pro- gress as an individual and to be a worthy representative of himself and his school. These opportunities are provided so that each person who is graduated from Jenkins High will have developed character that reflects the general excellence of the school and the community. The Sequoyah, with the hopes that its goal has been reached, wishes to present to the school, its students, and especially to the seniors, a means to recall the four most influential years of their lives, the Twenty-Fourth Volume of the Sequoyah. wcLct 'fct-iiy _____________________________________________EDITOR-IN-CHIEF AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP
