Mr. Frankenstein?” ABOVE: “Swimming pool, here I come!” 3 ETCHED IN TIME Like “footprints on the sands of time,” our lives are in part brought back to us by the accounts included in this book. As you look through the following pages, relive the past year remembering the good times and the not-so-good times. Do you recall the pep rallies or the time you were almost caught skipping? Remember your favorite teacher or the day you were half a minute late to class and you got a half hour of detention? Who could forget the football games we almost won or the prom or Graduation or... As I am reflecting on the past year and trying to decide what to write to you, the student body, my memory is crowded with all that has happened at Jenkins. These reflections are too numerous to mention here, but if you find a familiar face or scene in these pages, feel joyful or perhaps shed a tear. This book will then have served its purpose — to offer you a meaningful reminiscence of life at Hershel V. Jenkins. Its joys and sorrows are our own and should reflect a part of us that is too precious to be forgotten. UPPER RIGHT: So many colleges to choose from: I wonder which is the best one for me. ADMINISTRATION II Mr. Woodrow Crosby, the new principal at Jenkins, came to us from Myers Junior High where he had been principal for a year and a half. During his first year in a high school, lie made many changes. Me had the entrance poles and doors around school painted red, established an information booth in the main loggia, hung pictures in the halls, and campaigned against litterbugging. All of this helped make Jenkins very attractive. Mr. Crosby set some new goals for MVJ for 1977-78 more student council activity and Jenkins advancement to no. I in everything from academics to sports. When not busy at his school duties, Mr. Crosby enjoyed his favorite hobbies: tennis, music, sunbathing, and studying his Scottish heritage. UPPER: Susan Tate smiles nervously as Mr. Crosby wonders if she is trying to leave campus. ABOVE: Mr. Woodrow Crosby. Jr. Principal. ADMINISTRATION This past year Mr. Bcrksteiner, Mr. Jackson, and Mr. Spear were very efficient in solving the disciplinary problem of skippers at HVJ. The trio of assistant principals patrolled the school like FBI agents. Walkie-talkie systems and hall monitors surprised many students who were caught in the act. Mr. Spear worked with discipline, clubs, textbooks, athletics, and the selling of season tickets. He enjoyed his work and wanted the students to make HVJ what it should be. Mr. Jackson headed the county school bus transportation, daily absentee callers, and vocational training. He said that everyone should learn to live by the golden rule. Mr. Bcrksteiner, dealing mainly with discipline, thought that the past year ran more smoothly than before. He enjoyed his job and found that many students tried to improve our beautiful Jenkins High School. UPPER: Mr. Spear relaxes while dreaming of future school days. Instructions for computer sheets also took a big part of her day. Mrs. Noisworthy graduated from Georgia Southern College with a B. S. in Social Science. She previously worked as a school teacher at Johnson High School and Savannah High. During her free time, Mrs. Noisworthy engaged in playing golf and doing needlepoint. HUSTLING AND BUSTLING Every day at Jenkins revolved around the secretaries. Mrs. Lewis was bookkeeper, Mrs. Mell was general secretary and Mrs. Melhorn kept records. In addition to their office duties, these ladies helped students with many problems. The information booth was installed to relieve the secretaries of the task of signing students in and out of school. Answering phones, sorting mail, and typing memos were only part of the busy schedule of the secretaries. Working together, with the information booth, they served the students, faculty and public in many ways. EXTREME UPPER LEFT: Mrs. Mell smiles for the camera while sorting some important papers. SCHOOL SECRETARIES 17 SEARCH AND RESEARCH With a collection of over nineteen thousand books, our library helped many students find answers to their puzzling questions. Students also used filmstrips, records, transparencies, and other audio-visual materials to aid them in their learning process. Orientation for all students new to HVJ was successful again this year. Students learned how to use the library and its vast range of materials. The library was kept busy this year at lunchtime, before, and after school. Students used this extra time to finish their reports and projects. Library rooms were used by Special Education classes. SLD and BD. WORKING TOGETHER The primary objective of the PTSA was to unite the efforts of parents, teachers and students in obtaining the highest social and educational advantages for the youth of Jenkins. The PTSA held open house every quarter so that parents might meet the teachers in their classrooms. At the invitation of this fine organization, the HVJ Band presented a Christmas Concert. By working together for common objectives, the parents, teachers and students of the PTSA found new ways to serve the needs of the school. It was made up of people interested in supporting sports activities and encouraging the different teams to do their best. The main purpose of the club was to promote full cooperation among the club members, the coaches, the school officials and all students participating in sports. The Booster Club held several fund raising projects, including a barbecue dinner in the fall, monthly yard sales and bake sales. With these funds the club financed sports banquets in the fall, winter and spring, recognizing outstanding participants in each school sport. The club furnished trophies, plaques and other awards. When requested, they also provided assistance to the school. UPPER: “Andhow much will that cost? ABOVE: 1977-78 Adult Booster Club officers, (left to right): Rev. Bill Ford - President. ADULT BOOSTERS 21 YOU HAVE TO LOVE KIDS Mrs. Barrett, the nurse at Jenkins, was with us again for the second year. The problems she faced daily were stomach aches, headaches, minor injuries, tendencies to goof-off and problems of ninth graders trying to adjust. Mrs. Barrett also conducted the vision, hearing, and blood pressure tests for students. Previously she had worked in a doctor’s office, but this was her fifth year as a school nurse. Mrs. Barrett said, “You have to love kids to do it.” Her philosopy was to be prepared for anything. Mrs. Barrett spent her leisure time with her hobbies: music and cooking. The satisfaction of reaching one or two students during the year made Mrs. Barrett feel her job was well done. UPPER: Mrs. Barrett bandages a hurt student. ABOVE: Mr. Crosby. The goal was to talk to each student at least once during the year. During these conferences students were informed of what courses were needed to meet graduation requirements. The counselors were also interested in helping students continue their educations through college or vocational school. Students were advised about selecting courses that would be necessary for admission to the college of their choice. College catalogues and applications were made available to students and throughout the year college representatives were on campus to talk to interested students. Mr. Harris was job placement counselor and he assisted students in finding and selecting jobs that would best suit them. UPPER: Mr. Harris works on fob applications. ABOVE: Mrs. Hollo well. Ms. Kaigler, the director, and her eight co-workers offered four complete menus to students. There was also a diet lunch for those students attempting to trim down. Ms. Kaigler and her staff began at 7:00 in the morning to prepare for the mid-day rush. They worked until the cooking and cleaning up had been completed. Ms. Kaigler said that the work was not difficult but the process was long and tedious. During the year the cafeteria served everything from peas to pizza at a moderate price. Extra milk was available for those with a hearty appetite. Ms. Kaigler and her crew were much appreciated when it came to stopping the Warriors’ hunger pains. CALORIE COUNTER? The two janitors and seven maids did more than their share to make our building and grounds presentable. In addition to maintaining the heaters, lights, and other necessary machines in running order, the janitorial staff kept the landscape around HVJ beautiful. The staff of maids swept the floors and did other tidying jobs that kept our rooms and hall- ways spotless. The entire staff worked well together and succeeded in doing their long and tedious jobs. Included in the curriculum were newer P. E. classes: Beginning and Intermediate Gymnastics, a class that taught students the techniques of tumbling and the use of the balance beam and parallel bars; Recreational Games, a class in which students participated in such games as ping-pong and bowling; and a swimming class in which students made use of the new pool. In addition to these new subjects, many classes involving sports softball, soccer, football, basketball, and tennis were also offered. The wonderful teaching staff encouraged students to learn many things about all of these different sports and games. 33 UPPER: A typical day in the Jenkins Gym ABOVE: Some people just like to watch. The classes were divided into specialized topics that enabled students to take courses they were interested in. Biological Concepts was the beginning course in the science field. Other courses offered — Botany, Zoology, Physics, Atoms and Molecules, Astronomy, Meterology, and Physiology - were designed for students who wanted to learn more details about a subject. Many new potential scientists were discovered as students worked in labs, took part in experiments, and studied other technical aspects of Science. Each teacher added his own touch to make the courses more informative and interesting. UPPER: Science is more than dissecting. RIGHT: Mr. Kantziper smiles while his class works on. Skills acquired in these courses prepared students for office jobs in the business world. These skills were also useful in everyday life for students not interested in business careers. Some of the business courses offered were typing, shorthand, accounting, and office machines. These subjects were offered in such a way that students could start with beginning courses and move to more advanced courses, improving their skills as they went along. Mrs. Helmly, Mrs. Robertson. Mrs. Cullen, and Mrs. Hewitt the instructors of the business department — worked well with students, helping them to develop good working habits and attitudes. UPPER: Students at HVJ just love typingRIGHT: Guys need to know how to type, also! ABOVE: “This book could drive a person insane! ” 39 In the Industrial Arts classes students worked hard to achieve their goals - to make their thoughts, plans and designs into a work of art. Students were encouraged to strive to co-ordinate their hands and minds in preparation for possible future positions in architecture, surveying, and drafting. The Ind. Arts facilities included a workshop with adequate lighting, plenty of hand tools, and machinery with the necessary safety devices. All classroom activities were conducted with regard for individual and group safety. The instructors, Mr. LeMay and Mr. Bush, both offered students very rewarding courses. These courses helped to prepare students for adult and family responsibilities in the future. UPPER: This curtain is looking better after a little ironing. ABOVE: We sure are confused. UPPER RIGHT: Just this little place to paint and I’ll be finished. HOME ECONOMICS 41 LEARNING TO SPEAK ANOTHER LANGUAGE The language classes at HVJ appealed to students who wanted to learn more than just English last year. Besides offering the first year courses in Spanish. French, and Latin, the Foreign Language Department made it possible for students to take advanced courses in language. The main goal of the courses was the same as that of English classes - communication. Learning to speak and understand a language is a long and complicated process, but oral expression and comprehension accomplished a great deal. Field trips to restaurants to taste the food of the cultures added to one’s knowledge. Individual and group projects encouraged students to do research along their own lines of interest. Mrs. Gary, Mrs. Amari, and Mr. Brooks helped students to achieve their goals, thus preparing them to speak another language. UPPER: We took Spanish because of the food. Students first learned the basic art concepts. Then using their imaginations, they developed their own techniques. Student talent became evident in students creations - from painting on burlap to making designs out of eggshells. For some students came the reward of having some of their better pieces displayed for the entire school to enjoy. UPPER RIGHT: Masterpiece on display. ABOVE: Mrs. Erie- denburg and friend. With Mrs. Siefferman there to guide and direct them, the students worked on scripts. They demonstrated their talents by performing in skits and full-length plays. Also they developed their abilities to express emotions in an imaginative way. Mrs. Siefferman praised her students when they did something right and encouraged them when they were wrong. In addition to acting out published scripts, the students also wrote their own scripts and poetry. UPPER: Friends? LEFT: The other day well, it wasn V really the other day .. . The chorus and the band courses developed the students’ talents. Mr. Fennell led the chorus classes to near perfection last year. He guided many students in the singing of all types of songs. The classes were educational as well as fun. Mr. Sinkus’ classes in band provided a basis for students who wanted to develop their techniques in playing band instruments. This practice encouraged some students to play in our school band. The music instructors and the students worked together to brighten up Jenkins every day with cheery note or song. UPPER: “The Blackston's just think they sing well!” ABOVE RIGHT: “One. two, three, blow! RIGHT: Mr. Fennell is always watching his students. These courses reflected the growth and change of the individual and gave students an inside view of themselves, of others and of the world around. Students studied man’s social habits, his behavior and his outlook on life. Courses offered the past year were Psychology, American Behavior, Social Problems, Economics and Sociology. Although the classes involved discussion mainly, students participated in experiments and field trips. Social Science steered students into new and interesting fields of learning. SOCIAL SCIENCE 47 MEETING INDIVIDUAL NEEDS Last year Jenkins initiated a wider variety of programs for the Exceptional Children Program. The SEARCH program headed by Ms. Flisnick, and geared to students in the upper ten percent of their class, provided them with the opportunity to take classes on an advanced level. There were several other programs: Reading, headed by Um. Witkim;; PVT. headed by Ms. Balkman and Ms. Stiener; BD, headed by Ms. Shernoff;and SLD, headed by Ms. Caphton. These classes helped students by allowing them to reach their goals at their own speed. All of these special courses assisted exceptional students in meeting their individual needs. One of the ways in which they were involved was in the Driver’s Education class. Students learned the rules of the road and safe driving habits. The beginning of the course consisted of classroom instruction including films and visits from guest speakers. The students then applied their classroom knowledge to the driving range. There they learned the ins and outs of maneuvering an automobile. Finally, the students were given their last and most important test of driving. They were allowed on the streets of Savannah. At the conclusion of the course, students had become safe and defensive drivers. DRIVER’S HD 49 RECOGNITION OF... UPPER: Mrs. No rah O’Neill - new Curriculum Specialist and pre(j Edie-Star Student. The members pitched in and helped one another in order to meet the deadlines. Many hours during the holidays and some days after school were spent working to complete the annual. Even though the staff was rather small and the work was doubled, the members accomplished their purpose. The pages were easier to produce because of the Theory class that was offered in the spring quarter of 77. The future staff members learned just about everything they needed to know to plan a good annual. They were also deeply involved in selling ads before the school year started. With the help of the advisors and the staff team work, the book was successfully produced. Everyone was proud to have worked on the yearbook. UPPER CENTER: The 1977-78 Sequoyah Staff. In addition to GODSPELL, the ’76-’77 Chorus performed a SALUTE TO BROADWAY with 44 songs from 38 different Broadway musicals, complete with costumes and choreography. The choral members also participated in the All-State Tryouts. During May of 1977, the group took a four-day trip to Daytona Beach, Florida. In order to finance the trip, the members held candy sales and other fund-raising projects. Because of students’ interests. In the extended-day woodworking class, the students began by making an airplane that, when finished, was fully operational. In the photography class, students learned how to use a camera and how to print their own pictures. The club raised money for the Industrial Arts Department and helped interested students prepare special projects for the state convention of Industrial Arts Clubs. UPPER: Ind. The beginning of the season looked bright as the Warriors defeated Savannah High, last year’s region champs, in the first region game of the season. The next region game was not as bright as Jenkins lost 3-1 to Winsor Forest. The team did get back on the track and went on to a 9-2 record at the Easter break. With some injuries to key players and a great deal of controverscy the team went into a slump and lost 7 of its last 9 games. Even with this slump, the Warriors did get into the Region tournament by tying Groves for third place in the Region. The season ended as Windsor Forest defeated Jenkins 2-0 in the region playoffs. Awards were given to Teresa Thompson - Best Team Supporter and Gail Smith — Most Valuable Player, for their excellence in the field of Softball. This honor climaxed a 10-3-1 win-loss-tie season. Many individual players added extra honor to the Jenkins’ name. Glen Price was first in the city singles tournament, second in the region singles, and advanced to the quarter finals in state competition. Stan Hewitt and David Harvey won first place in the doubles and advanced to semi-finals in the region. Lynn DiCola attained second in the singles in city competition. Susan Goodrich and Freddie Sims conquered their opponents to become first place in city doubles. The team did not achieve their success alone. Harry Jenkins and Eloise Glass gave the team excellent instruction and much encouragement. WELCOMING A NEW SPORT In spite of the full sports schedule at Jenkins, the Warriors found time to support another game. Four soccer teams were developed for competition against schools in and out of Savannah. The teams formed consisted of a Varsity, a Junior Varsity, a Warrior Freshmen team (13-14 years old) and a Prep team (12 and under). Games, coached by Joseph Sanfilippo and Tom Miller, were played at Daffin Park on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. A special group of cheerleaders was formed also. Prep-cheerleaders were required to cheer only at JV, Warrior Freshmen and Prep-team games. Varsity cheerleaders chose to cheer at Varsity soccer games in addition to cheering at the basketball games. These two groups of cheerleaders boosted the spirit of the spectators and the players and made soccer a welcomed sport at Jenkins. -O' K it 102 SOCCER TEAMS EXTREME UPPER I.EFT: Prep-cheerleaders. The season began with a loss to the Tompkins Wolverines. The enthusiastic Warriors came back for a win over Glynn Academy. In spite of the hard work of the varsity team, the next two games against Windsor Forest and Wayne County ended in losses for H. V. J. Forced into two four-minute overtimes, the game against Groves resulted in a 34-28 score which later was to be pronounced a tie because of a penalty against the rival team. Jenkins followed this up with four straight losses: Statesboro, Benedictine, Savannah High, and Brunswick. The last game against Beach resulted in a 9-0 victory and became the final win of the season. This game left the Warriors with a 2-7-1 average and hopes for a better season next year. 104 FOOTBALL UPPER LEFT: Head Coach l.ee Snyder, Team Captain Ralph Forbes, Co-Captain - Michael Grant. Savannah High was the first to score a touchdown at the beginning of the quarter; however, the determined Warriors came back to tie the score at 6-6 by the end of the quarter. Despite the enthusiasm of the varsity team through the final quarters, the rival team pulled ahead and the game ended with a 33-6 loss for Jenkins. This matter left the Warriors with a 1-6-1 average and facing two final games against Brunswick and Beach with high hope and much confidence. Games were played cither at Jenkins or at the school of the opposing team. The team showed the attitude needed for playing high school football by doing their best in all the games. JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL 109 GIRLS CHALLENGE • • • Although the girls’ basketball team coached by Mrs. Kenlaw didn’t win many victories this past year, the players gained valuable experience and developed skills that left high hopes for the future of the young team. The girls’ games preceded the boys’ varsity contests and added excitement and spirit to the basketball events. The girls’ team met the challenge of other teams with enthusiasm and determination that gave the spectators non-stop action. The team participated in other school activities. They sponsored a student-faculty basketball game and sold key chains to raise money for new facilities. UPPER: Girls’ Basketball team. Front Row: (left to right): Vicky Moody. Teresa Campbell. Spending many long, hard hours practicing, the members of the team put all their efforts into representing Jenkins on the court to the best of their ability. The team did not bring home many victories in the 1977-78 season, but gained much valuable experience. With many returning players on the JV and Varsity teams, future seasons looked bright. BASKETBALL 111 TWO, TWO ... Although the 1977-78 season did not prove to be successful for the varsity basketball team, the year was not without its thrilling moments. During each game the Warriors aroused the excitement of their loyal fans who continued to support them throughout the season. Coached by Ben Gadson, the team labored many hours practicing and preparing for the games in order to give their opponents stiff competition. Instructed by Coach Gadson, the girls spent many hours practicing in order to develop their skills and gain a better sense of teamwork. According to Coach Gadson, “The game of volleyball would be a better game if there were a definite set of rules, set officals and more publicity.” In spite of the handicaps, the coach encouraged his team to attend all games and to play their very best. Even though it was not a good season, Coach Gadson and the team are both looking forward to a better season next year. 9 UPPER: Coach Gadson - Team advisor. Students competed to see who best showed Homecoming spirit; Dianne Loadhold and Maxwell Gazola were named Mr. and Miss Spirit. Many clubs and various classes participated in the pre-game parade. The Faculty and Administration also participated in many of the Homecoming events. Adding to the festivities were a variety of activities, including the Mr. and Miss Spirit contest. Squaw Day, Warrior Day, and a dance that featured WSGA’s disc-jockeys. Although Jenkins lost to Benedictine, the Homecoming game was enjoyed by all. There were eight contestants, and each contestant added something very special to the evening. The girls were required to display their talent in a 5 7 minute performance. BELOW Mrs. Josephine Amari and BELOW RIGHT: Mr. Wallace Hayes. Sequoyah Staff advisors. 222 THE FACULTY OF H V J.. . To the students and faculty of HVJ, I dedicate volume twenty of the SEQUOYAH. A lot of time and hard work went to make this book a success and although it isn’t perfect, it is special to me and hopefully to you. As always, there were problems but with determination and a lot of luck we always managed to find the right answers. To the staff advisors, Mrs. Josephine Amari and Mr. Wallace Hayes, go my sincere thanks for all their help and patience with the staff and me. My gratitude goes to the staff members because without them there would be no book. I would like to thank all the people who helped and cooperated with us when we needed them. Last but not least I thank all the wonderful people at Keys for the excellent job of printing and all the people at Bryn-Alan who did an excellent job on pictures. The school year is over and soon all the trials and triumphs that you shared with your friends will be pushed to the back of your mind to be replaced with new memories. I hope that when you open this book in the future it will succeed in helping you to relive the good old days at Jenkins. Your “footprints in the sands of time” at HVJ arc much too precious to be forgotten completely. Godspeed. Editor-In-Chief ABOVE: Lest we forget. LE CERCLE FRANCAIS For some students the desire to learn more about the French language and France itself was strong enough for them to join the French Club. Lc Cercle Francais was active in several different ways. In the Fall the members had a candy sale to raise money for a trip to Charleston that came later in the year. At Christmas time the club took part in an international dinner with the Spanish and Latin clubs and the AFS. In the Spring the members prepared a French exhibit for the International Festival of the language clubs of Chatham County and the first district of Georgia. UPPER RIGHT: French Club Officers. The name of the club was “Quo Vadis,” which means “where are you bound?” This name was appropriate for the club members who would find Latin useful to them in furthering their education. The club was a member of the Junior Classical League, and several club members attended the league’s state convention in Atlanta. The club raised activity money by selling candy and sponsoring a dance. - r rxv-K TniQM5 ef A V i i. v 7— X %J. - ' UPPER: Ixitin Club. First Row: A va Salter, Gwen Passmore.
