Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz said in a talk to Society ot Sponsors ot United States Navy: A ship is always referred to as she because it costs so much to keep one in paint and powder. A boat is called a she because there's always a great deal ot bustle around her.. . because there's usually a gang ot men around...because she has a waist and stays...because she takes a lot ot paint to keep her looking good...be- cause it's not the initial expense that breaks you, it's the upkeep... because she is all decked out... because it takes a good man to handle her right... be- cause she shows her topsides, hides her bottom and, when coming into port, always heads for the buoys. r,,,,,,,,n ..... NOW SET These words are welcome to all hands as the helos often bring supplies, visitors or, best of all mail. On one occasion a helo detail brought a great deal more excitement than anyone ex- pected. On July 6, T967 helo number 54 from the USS HELO DETAIL drop guard mail. ln a freak accident a rag was sucked into the helo's intake, and in a matter of seconds the engine died and the helo crashed into the waters of Manila Bay. Fortunately no one was seriously iniured and rescue operations were swiftly and successfully car- , ried out.
