Her gun tire support activities ranged from the DMZ to the Saigon river en- trance. ln approximately 35 days of firing she expended 280i rounds ot 5 inch ammunition on targets ranging from Sampans carrying V.C. supplies and arms to bunkers and V.C. base camps. The ship received many favor- able comments on her work. ln the words of one spotter, it was the best l've seen in Vietnam. Melville writing of the quarter gunners and gunners mates refers to them as, a class full of unaccountable whimsies They were continually grumbling and growling about the batteries - running in and out among the guns- driving the sailors away from them and cursing and swearing as if all their consciences had been powder singed and made callous by their calling. 1' Ai I1 1 I , Q-.,,,,-....--n Cv l E I .
