This Varsity Football Team of 1962 will be remembered for many reasons, first of all it conquered the preseason practice game iinx by beating Oceana 40 to O. This team will also be remembered for the fine football players it has produced. Among these are four who excelled to the point that they gained all N.P.L. Honors. And most impor- tant of all, this team will go down in Jeffer- son annals as the team that was a 3 touch- down underdog to South City that came from behind to win 26 to 20 in the last great Jeff-South City night game clash. 7 www Ahuna charges Final Iouchdown. Coached by Mr. Mezzara and Mr. Boyd the team won four out of six games to place second in the league. Outstanding on the team were Stan Kinka who led the team in scoring and Paul Howe who led defensively and also punted. Credit should also be given to left end Gene Campbell who won both the Oceana and El Camino games by catching touch- down passes in the final seconds of play. The team was highlighted by Larry Jones, a transfer student. Larry attended Sacred Heart High School before attending Jeff. He was both an excellent defensive and offensive player. Steve Willis contributed to the varsity team by netting 'IO7 points. Both .lones and Willis made All-League. Larry Keeling and Dan Baden both gave a fine showing for the entire season. Both teams had 9 wins and 1 loss record. Jeff l3O's had a lot of trouble in the first part of the season. Especially in beating the easy teams. The last game of the season with South City was an easy victory as the l3O's led by Ed Larios and Al Stoller beat South City by 49-38. Coach Kelly said that this team hus- tled more than any other team he has ever coached. lt was this hustle, plus desire, that brought the championship to Jeff. 7202 3 E A E E e e, Q 5 ls! This years swimming team was the best all around team that Jefferson has had. The Varsity missed championship by one point. The B's should win championship and the C's tied for champion- ship going into the finals. The most exciting meet of the year was with South San Fran- cisco. The Varsity needed to win in order to have a championship team. Each race was a close one, not only for first place but for second and third places. Everyone tried hard but Jefferson lost by one point. The Varsity had many outstanding swimmers this year and broke several school records. The freestyle relay team, composed of Rich Hillman, Jeff Goodin, Larry Ahuna, and AI Runge, broke the School Record. Dave Jenkins broke the IOO yd. butterfly re- cord and Captain Larry Ahuna broke the 50 yd. freestyle. record. The B team also erased a few school records when freshman Jim lversen broke the 200 yd. freestyle record and Robert Ostle- ford, Bruce Gilbert, Ken lwahashi, and Dan Carey broke the Med- ley Relay Record. The C team had outstanding swimmer Ed Portier who tied the school backstroke record. We would like to thank the mem- bers ofthe faculty, who were patient enough to excuse many students many times from many classes. We would like to thank Mr. Bud Bosco and Mr. Laurie McCaffrey, who were always striving to give us the best possible book. We would like to thank the unsung Jefferson photographers without whose work this book would be autograph pages from cover to cover. Last but definitely not least, we would like to thank Mr. Gil Toibin, our patient and long-suffering advisor, who really ought to get more than ulcers for giving us the oppor- tunities to truly make this our yearbook. STANDING: Coach Mezzera. VARSITY The Indians potentially were a good solid and strong defensive and offensive team. They can right- fully claim one of the outstanding outfields, consisting of Jerry Sullivan left fielder, Mike Morton center fielder, and Jerry Rolling right fielder. The infield strength centered around the good double play com- bination of shortstop Larry Keeling and secondbase- man Al Stoller. Backing up this combination were Skip Del Sarto catcher, Roy Beecher thirdbase, and Bob Easley firstbase. The biggest iob and determining factor on the outcome of the team rested on the shoulders of the inexperienced Junior pitching staff, consisting of Jerry Sullivan, Mike Gutierrez, Don Fisicaro, and Art Valdez. The final results hinged on the pitching staff. So go the pitchers, so go the Indians. 'I22 FRONT ROW KLEFT T0 RIGHTI: John Grambow, John Mortimare, Leonard Staff, Denny Navarro, Pete Barry, Tom Pritchard, George Egan, Al Rideau, Obdulio Carcamo, Rich Moura, Jeff Starkovich, Tom Snodgrass, AI Namanny. The 1963 Frosh-Soph . baseballers ended the season with a record of eight wins and two losses, they shared the cham- pionship with El Camino, who had a similar record. Pete Barry led the team in hitting with a 441 batting average. He also played fine defensive baseball at shortstop, as did Ron Sawyer at third, Roy Chiappari at second, and Tom Snodgrass at first. The catching chores were shared by Jim Crane and Bob Bias. Two of the finest pitchers in the league, Paul Howe and Tolia Solaita, held the opposition to very few runs. Solaita, when not pitching, played right field and swung a big bat for his team, he drove in eleven runs. Dennis Navarra, Frank King, Ray Madru, and Rich Cuadra played fine defensive ball in the outfield. On balance, this year's Frosh-Soph baseball team was one which any coach might be proud. From left to Right: Co-Captain Tolia Solaitu, Coach Ed Cereghino, Co-Captain Tom Snodgrass. l23 .We-We g i waz 2822 W gm, 7 765' Sascha ga!! of '65 K 7 l P P I I I S E N I s O 'E R A K 7344 23, 1963 79619 P019 Smmnwg Saazlathkg T E N I S qfouealou T E A C H E R S 's ' n ik., .. . a Q if if ' fy '3 Q.. , x. 9 Q --- 4115 E 5 gil gk gi-4 ' 4. kv. wr. 3?-f , 6 - 2' A - ,vi aff x , - - :af -Q ' 115. axe: ' eg' f .
