Gene Nay sings Memories. THE MIDTERM GRADUATES We are The midTerm senior class. When we TirsT came To JeTTerson as unsure Treshmen, we Tound The adiusTmenT To The high school rouTine made more bewildering by our plunge inTo school liTe aT mid- year. AlThough There were obsTacles in our paTh, we meT and hurdled Them wiTh The guidance oT parenTs, Teachers, and advisors. We were TorTunaTe To have Mrs. Anderson and Mr. Mongan as deans. Their helpf Tul manner and lcindly aTTiTude gave us The righT sTarT in our school career aT JeTTerson. Our Treshman and sophomore years Tairly Tlew along. One oT our TirsT and mosT exciTing evenTs was The donlcey basl4eTball game. lT seemed ThaT The men ToughT more againsT The donlceys Than againsT Their opponenTs. When we were sophomores, some oT The sTudenTs parTicipaTed in Their TirsT aquacade. As iuniors we became more acTive in school aTTairs. Nancy Pera and Nancy lVlcCaTTery sang in ThaT year's marvelous band show. Playing Tor bo+h This evenT and The Spanish Club's Carioca Caper were TrumpeTer Earl Troche and bass player Earl lv1cCune. Following our lasT summer vacaTion we came baclc To school ready Tor work and bursTing wiTh energy. ln The lasT Tour and a halT monThs everyThing seemed To happen aT once. Crowding our schedule were senior picTures and announcemenTs, dances, plays, assemblies, and senior commiTTees. ln The senior as- sembly, Jim Albera acTed The Tough guy in The Born YesTerday slqiT, and Floyd Gonella played golf wiTh Don Lewis in The audiToriurn aisles. ln The play A Murder l-las Been Arranged, Basil Beeson was The vicTim and Lee Gorsuch swam in Paris in The Agua' Cade. We were especially proud oT Ray Schmilrlce, who was ediTor oT The 'l'oTem Pole in his lasT semesTer, and oT Gene Lorenzo, who was chosen by The sTudenT body as iTs presidenT. Comic relief in The Tense, nervous momenTs oT graduaTion was provided by Floyd Gonella's Tall Trom The olaTTorm during The assembly rehearsal. ln Their speeches aT graduaTion, ValedicTorian Lee Gorsuch. SaluTaTorian Earl McCune, and Class Speaker Craig CoTTee expressed our regreTs aT leaving This wonder- Tul school, our appreciaTion oT The help we have re- ceived, and our hopes Tor whaT The TuTure miqhT bring. In The nexT few years, They musT assume an increasing share of re- sponsibilifies. Already This year. The freshmen are showing greaT promise. As sopho- mores They will probably be breaking inTo big Time, ioining clubs, and going ouT for differenf sporTs and acTiviTies. These new sTudenTs have come from many differenf grammar schools, some from schools along The coasf, oThers from Daly CiTy, Brisbane, and Bayshore. They are gain- ing new acquainfances and a new sense of freedom. In The years which are To follow These friendships will be sTrengThened. They will casT aside The reckless and carefree manner which followed Them Through Their grammar school days. Now They shall grow in wisdom and learn To work wiTh oTher sTudenTs and Teachers. Many of The girls and boys will develop special TalenTs as They progress. The boys may become oufsfanding aThleTes in sporTs. The girls may blossom in homemaking or music. Besides learning from books and Their Teachers. They will gain knowledge of people and Their ersonaliTies. They will learn To adiusf To everyday siTuaTions and underfake responsibiliTies on Their own. Under The able direcTion of The freshman class presidenf, Joan Sfevenson. The freshmen have become acTive members of The Jefferson l-ligh sTudenT body. ln The few monThs which They have been here, Their uncerTainTies Toward a differenf Type of school life have vanished. Doomed, of course, To labor in humble obscurify Through Their apprenficeship as freshmen and sophomores iT may encourage Them To realize ThaT They represenf The fuTure presTige and glory of Jefferson High, and we are looking forward To a brillianl fuTure Through Them. 56 AUTOGRAPHS ly , X! fx: I 11 I nk X fl , I-'V Ill lip' A 1' rf f Ql O fy A' f ' J A fx J Nxfkl ff? Mr. Miguel's supervision and the etiorts ot Presidents Gail Howes and Barbara Dale put over a diversitied program. Following a popular skating party at the San Mateo Rolladium in October was the club's annual dinner, held this year at Lucca's on November 2 I, where the club enjoyed a tull-course chicken dinner. Entertainment was provided by Mr. I-lannah's and Mr. Miguells jokes, tollowed by Gary McFaIl's piano solo and Altreda Pistohl's singing. An embarrassing moment occurred when the guest ot honor, Mr. I-lannah, had to toot the bill because Mrs. Miguel had lett the club's check at home. Both members and non-members enjoyed the club's next objective, knocking down bowling pins at the Sport Center. Jerry Yarborough and Gail I-lowes both won prize boxes ot candy tor the highest scores made by club members. Bob Davis was the highest scoring non-member. Most ot the other bowlers had a hilarious time vying tor low score, made by Vice-President Cecilia Sullivan. At the Rhumba Rhapsody. held March I4 with the music ot Roberto Anderson, I-larriet I-Iaakensen and Mr. Miguel entertained with authentic Spanish dances. Balloons talling trom the ceiling caused a mad stampede and shrieks trom the girls as many balloons popped in the melee. Practice has begun on this year's annual show, Brazil, Atter three months' prepara- tion to get singers, dancers, and band ready tor the April 25 production night, it will be in the brilliant rhythmic pattern ot tormer Spanish Club productions.
