Pop is an institution at jefferson, an institution we should not like to see vanish. He is gallant. His cheery smiles, polite greetings, and laughing compliments warm the hearts of the girls. The friendly hello which he offers to the boys is returned a hundred-fold. He is a diligent worker. He turns the most menial tasks into a pleasure to behold. To this model of what mankind might be, we dedicate our 1948 Tom Tom. --vap- Y ' W'1 -' W 'Z' ' Y wwf-1-qu.--W 1-V 1 w,--A 'i mf- 'A am x Sl 353 September 10, 1947 marked the first day of the new semester. In September, all classes held elections for class officers for the fall term, and students received the X-ray service given by the San Mateo County Tuberculosis and Health Association. October brought the first dance of the year, the Quarterback Sneakng and the opening of the ,47 football season, the end of which found the Indians rank- ing third in the league, having placed three men on the All-P.A.L. teams. Jeff battled South City in the Thanksgiving Big-Little Game and won. Ground was broken for the new shop buildings in November, and members of the Lions' Club, escorted by Senior girls, toured the school that month. In December, the Junior Class presented their annual prom. In January, Ray Settrini was elected student-body' president and the Seniors held their Senior Ball. Graduation exercises were held for the fall class on February 5, 1948. A Donkey Basketball game held in the gym in February proved to be the most exciting event of the year. The Spring Seniors presented their play in April and were graduated June 16, 1948. -11 , f F ,. .5 wk K I Wm. Stanford Hannah ' I A task without a vision is drudgery. A vision without a task is a dream: But a task with a vision is an opportunity and a challenge. We wish that each senior would catch a vision and then apply himself to its realization, To do these things will most certainly assure him a life of achievement and of satisfaction. Some find the above secret to success early and profit thereby. Others postpone eventual discovery of the secret, while still others avoid it entirely. Few realize the narrow margin of effort between the man who achieves and the man who fails. Be of the former groupg your efforts will be well rewarded. STANFORD I-IANNAH Distric! C LRSS OF 1348 ANN Romain-sow, Secretary-Treasurer LEE OBERG. Secretary-Treasurer DAN WILSON, President OSCAR GIUSTI, President BEVERLY Rowe, Vice-President DORIS PARODI, ViC2-Pr0SiCl9nt The Fall Senior Class was a small one, but the members made up in activity and spirit what they lacked in number. The group enjoyed a Senior Get Together Day, for which they planned a trip to Muir Vifoods. Plans for a Senior Sneakv were abandoned when the seniors were given a week's vacation. The high light of the semester was the Senior Ball. The auditorium was beautifully decorated as a Chinese Garden and class members in formal dress had a wonderful evening, climaxed by the grand march of grad- uating seniors. The Spring Senior Class was a large one, with many members who were leaders in school activities. The Seniors used the Baby Day idea as the theme for their Senior Jinx, which was entitled The Birthday Party. Other class plans included a Senior Breakfast, a Senior Get Together Day, and a Senior Ball. The theme for the ball was Blue Champagne and it was a huge success. This class originated the custom of permitting only graduating seniors to wear white dinner jackets to the Senior Ball. fiafsfvvm sig? As soon as school started, the board authorized the sale of student body cards, and for the second consecutive semester, every regis- tered student at Jefferson obtained a card. During the semester a motion was approved that one Block J card be issued to the out- standing boy athlete and the outstanding girl athlete of the semester. The card entitles the holder, for life, to admission to any sports event at Jefferson. The board appointed publicity managers to announce games and school activities. These managers were also responsible for the exhibits in the halls during the semester. The Executive Board declared a Camera Week, during which students took candid shots of school activities for the yearbook. The Board also approved the Art Club's constitution, and so authorized its activities. During the semester, representatives from Jefferson were invited to attend a Student Conference meeting, where they gained valuable experience through the exchange of ideas with other schools. The Spring Executive Board worked hard to accomplish a very important task-that of revising the constitution to lit the require- ments of a changing, expanding school. Due to the fact that voting methods were so confusing, plans were made to use voting machines for coming elections. One recommendation which the Board is con- sidering is the setting up of a juice box in the cafeteria. It has been suggested that dancing lessons be given at the school at night. The Board was responsible for rearranging the trophies in the case in the gymnasium. The managers of various theaters in the vicinity of the school have been consulted by Board members as to the possi- bility of reduced admission prices for jefferson students. In addition to its regular Tuesday meetings, the Board is meeting every third Aj , ' N-via. week before school so that honorary members can be informed of - the business of the preceding meetings. , , RAY SETTRINI, Spring Student Body President. aL-Hama: Fin! The 1947 season was the second best recorded in the annals of Blue and Gold history. Only three regulars from the 1946 eleven were back: All-P. A. L. quarterback, Don Mossi, rugged, hardhitting center, Richard Morgan, and shifty fullback, Monte Robinson. Four boys from last year's second team landed first-string berths. They were Bill Bolster, left tackle, Clarence Hubrig, left guard, Ted Van Kirk, left halfback, and Gene Gross, right end. Rico Ottonello graduated from last yearls frosh-soph squad to become first-string right halfback. Bob Lazzerini, right tackle, Louis De Salvatore, left end, and Dave King, right guard, had not had previous football experience, but under expert coaching, they became valuable parts of the Indian Grid-Machine. The Indians got off to a good start by swamping Washington of Centerville, 18-13, and Menlo High, 26-6, in two practice games. In their first league game the Indians went to work, under Mossi,s withering aerial barrage, to defeat the Panthers from Burlingame, 24-12. This victory came as an upset since Burlingame had been picked by the Peninsula papers to win the league championship. For their next game, the varsity traveled to Palo Alto, only to be pummeled, 33-0, by a powerful Viking squad. The Indians then went through a hard week of training to face the terror of the league, the Lincoln Lions. Although the score, 32-14, indicates a trouncing, actually the Lions had to fight hard many times to keep the Indians out of their end zone. After these two defeats, the Indians buckled down to defeat Sequoia, 20-18 and the San Jose Bulldogs, 14-6. In their next game, the Indians were edged out, 14-13, by two tricky San Mateo conversions. Jefferson came to the last game of the season with three defeats and three wins. The team was determined to put one more game in the win column. They were out to beat their traditional rival, South San Francisco. A touch-down pass from Mossi to De Salvatore and a smashing line buck by Ray Settrini gave Jefferson a 12-0 victory over South San Francisco and the trophy awarded to the winner. Five varsity players were recognized by being placed on the All-P. A. L. teams: Don Mossi and Louis De Salvatore, first team, Richard Morgan, second team, Bob Lazzerini, third team, and Monte Robinson, honorable mention. FROSH-SOPH BASEBALL First Row: J. Hatchel, T. The Jefferson Frosh-Soph baseball team went out on the Held to win their first league game by a score of nine to six. However, because Bob Martinelli was ineligible, the game was lost by a score of one to nothing. This dicl not stop the might of the team who went on to win many more league games. The team had a very good pitching staff, able catchers and an all around excellent nine. Al Findlay, who was chosen most valuable player on the team by the players and coach, looks very promising. The Fresh-Sophs should make a fine showing when they return in the spring to play for the Varsity. COACH Jos MCGRATH COACH VICTOR BINSACCA WIMMIN First Row: Dick Tooke, Leroy Gonzales. L. schools this season because of the limited number of swimmers out for the sport. They will, however, enter the P. A. L. trials and Hnals held at Sequoia, after swimming against the majority of the San Francisco schools. The Varsity is the more powerful of the divisions having beaten Lincoln's Varsity from San Francisco in its second meet of the season. The Varsity consist of Leroy Sea Breeze Davis and Ed Backwashn Warner, free style sprintersg Jim 'lWaterwings Wamo, breast stroke, and distance man, Dave 'lSeaweed Arteseros. Arteseros is a 130 by exponents, but will compete in the varsity 220-yard free style. Seaweedn has taken P. A. L. twice in succession as a 120's swimming the 100-yard freestyle, setting a P. A. L. record of 1:03.8. In the lighter divisions the most outstanding swimmers are Les Nicolini, freestyler for the 120,sg Al Salogga, back stroker for the 1ZO's, and Ed Cyr, back stroker for the 130's, LeRoy Gonzales, free- style, and jim Harrison are also outstanding 130's. L. man, is the fastest 440 and 880 man on the Peninsula. Besides making P. A. L. last year in the 440, he placed third in the Northern California meet in this same event. George De Salvatore throws the discus and the shot and clears the high hurdles for high points, Hermansen's specialty is the 100 yard dash. Oscar Guisti, who is out temporarily, should prove vital to the' team also. ' The l30's leading men are Ray Lagomarsino, who runs the 330 and shows great promise as a pole vaulter, and Bob High, whose specialties are the 660 and the hurdles. The team i.ncludes such dash men as Ken Sanguinetti, Rich Ryan, and Roy Ostegren. Mario Stanghellini is the outstanding man in the 120's division. A veteran of two previous years in this division, he can run the 100 yard dash in 11 seconds flat. Assisting him are Pete Vallerino, Leo Lemon, and Art Rud. Among the after-school sports enjoyed by the girls were tennis, archery, soccer, swimming, basketball, volleyball, and badminton. Soccer was featured for the first time, and was well accepted. There was such a large turnout for basketball that it had to be divided into two seasons. During the basketball season, we had four play days: Burlingame, there, South City, here, Lowell, here, and Sequoia, here. In interclass basketball, an elimination contest was won by the Juniors, who defeated the mighty Seniors. In tennis, the two best players were chosen from each class and after school, an elimination contest was held to judge the outstanding tennis player. Beverly Stein was the winner. In swimming, the girls voted Claire Allen the best swimmer of the year. The main event of the year was the aquacade which was put on by the girls interested in swimming.
